Iron Hands: Chapter Master

With the coming of the new codex and the Horus Heresy Iron Hands on the horizon, I decided it was time to tackle a project I've wanted to do for a long time.

Having spent the past few weeks ordering kits and bits from various sources I finally sat down last weekend and started assembling.

This blog will probably be slow going for a while, but I wanted to share the first big project. Fittingly enough it's the Clan Commander who I've decided will use the Chapter Master profile because, as you will see, his stature demands it. I also plan on doing some Honour Guard (Chapter Champ is already built) and generally want the biggest badass I can muster.

I give you The Lord Mastodon; Iron Commander of Clan Vurgaan!

The initial thought that popped into my head was a scaled down Lord of Skulls. A centauric monstrosity, more machine than astartes at this point.

The tracks are made from a Forgeworld Rapier. No real modifications were done other than leaving off the laser destroyer.

The lower torso is the straight legs from the Centurion kit chopped up and re-positioned to fit between the tracks.

Pistons and exo-skeleton bits were used to build out the lower body. The front armour plate is actually the butt plate from the centurion kit.

The upper torso is mostly pure Centurion. I carved off the icons on the arms and he will be armed with a Thunder Hammer and Shield Eternal. A rhino hatch will form the basis for the shield. I'm waiting on some Brass Etch and some tiny watch parts I ordered off ebay to assist with the detailing.

The back was built up with various bits and finished off with a set of fuel tanks from a flamestorm cannon. Still not sure how to finish the back or if it is finished already. We shall see.

That's it for now...

Well, one more.

Here is a sneak peak of the thunder hammer and left hand holding it.

Let me know what you think!

The Hammer is Forged.

So getting the hand of the centurion to hold a hammer required quite a bit of work. The "mitten" had to go; replaced by three digits cut from a power fist. The thumb and index finger of the centurion were retained and I'm very pleased with the final result and position of the hammer within the hand. The hammer's shaft is cut from a techmarine and extended with a part from the Wolf Guard kit. The top of the hammer is a land speeder searchlight with another bit from the techmarine on the end for the "wrench" thing. There will be something on the front of the hammer-head. I'm just not sure what yet.

After playing around a bit I decided that I would need to revise the pose a bit. Instead of his left hand thrust out in front as if leading the charge, I rotated the torso so it looks like he's on the back end of a swing with the hammer.

Here is a shot from behind to give you a sense of how this is coming together. Still a lot more detailing to come. I have to cable up the hammer and work on the shield. Hopefully the postman brings me some gubbins this week so I can really get to work on the details.

Next up is the head. I have one in mind, I just have to find it. tongue.png

Thanks for all the feedback so far.

As for how he climbs stairs; he doesn't. He has an entire company of able marines to take care of that sort of thing. And I imagine he has a set of legs somewhere that he can slap on if need be...I just might model those at some point. cool.png

The Lord Mastodon has a head!

Another night, another few steps closer to actually putting paint on this guy.

I added some cables to both the hammer and shield, which is now affixed in place and nut just blue tac'd. The cables will disapear under the shoulder pads. I plan on adding a few more to both the shield and hammer.

The head is from a Grey Knight apothecary. Other than green stuffing in the little cross emboss it's pretty much stock. I will add some cables going into the back of the head at some point when it's closer to completion.

I used the stock assault launchers for one side of the chest cavities and built a sensor system for the other side that will represent an auspex, or the targeting array for his orbital strike.

I'm working on a TL bolter on the end of a servo arm for his back, but I'm not sure I like the result yet. I'll post some pics of that in the next update.

Hopefully I'll have the assembly finished this week and can start painting him next weekend.

So my brass etch arrived as did the 10 grams of watch parts I picked up on the ebays.

There's some good bits in there. And a lot of stuff that I will be adding to my basing chum. The nickel is for scale (for you Americans, a Canadian nickel is the same size as your's).

So here are some shots of where we are at right now.

Finally, here is what I'm currently trying to figure out. Since he's mounted on a bike he's got a set of TL bolters. So where do I put them? I'm planning on having several mechadendrites and repair arms sprouting out of his back, so I thought, why not the bolters? I'm not sure how I feel about it, so feedback is appreciated.

For some reason, this guy is screaming: "Master of the Forge" to me for some reason, instead of chapter master. Probably would seem that way more if he had mechadendrites and whatnot.

Maybe put the Storm bolter on his shoulder with a canister leading into his back for the ammunition. I'm not sold on the mechadendrite holding the stormbolter, it looks a little to small for him.

I'm not entirely sold on the hammer, it doesn't seem a fit match for such a large model.

Awesome conversion Dosadi! A unit of these would be great stand ins for Centurions, they look so much better than the standard GW minis. I like the Storm Bolter the way it is and it will look even better when it is balanced with a servo-arm on the other side.

Can't wait to this mini finished :)

You could run him as if he had a bike...

Bike with that relic shield that gives eternal warrior no doubt- this dude just looks  unkillable!

I agree whole heartedly, this guy practically needs a horus heresy heavy bolter popping out/grafted to the shoulder instead of that dinky storm bolter mechadendrite.
