Wolf Lord Krom Dragongaze unit

I've been toying with creating a model for the Wolf Lord Krom Dragongaze. Here's the excerpt from the Space Wolves Codex describing him:

"Krom Dragongaze, also known as the 'Fierce-eye', has a presence and a sheer force of will that can be petrifying to a lesser man. Krom does not suffer fools gladly and has ripped out the throat of more than one man foolish enough to challenge his decisions. Highly competitive, Krom loves taking part in all kinds of contests with his fellow Wolf Lords, be they eating, drinking, dueling, hunting, or the Trail of the Bladed Eye, at which Krom excels. As with all Space Wolves, however, Krom prefers to prove himself in battle above all. He keeps a great many Wolf Guard in his Company, for the Fierce-Eye believes that valor should be rewarded wherever it is to be found.

Krom's sigil is that of the Sun Wolf, who makes the belly of the sun his lair, and attacks Fenris anew with every dawn."

And so with that I've come up with the stats I'm going to hopefully use with my model once it's built/painted:

Krom Dragongaze

  • Wolf Lord
  • Wargear: TDA, Storm Bolter, Frost Blade, Belt of Russ, Wolftooth Necklace, Wolf-Tail Talisman, Melta Bombs, Saga of the Bear
  • Special Rules: And They Shall Know No Fear, Independent Character, Acute Senses, Counter-Attack, Wolves of Legend
  • Points: 270

Wolves of Legend: Wolf Guard units count as Troops in any army that includes Krom Dragongaze

That's what I have planned for now until the SW Codex gets the 6th Ed upgrade. I'll modify it at that time if needed.

Maybe making the "Wolves of Legend" ability choose a single Wolf Guard pack in your army and make it into a troop choice?? This way you still get the feeling of Krom and yet he stays unique from Logan.

End of Line

id jsut use logan counts as

that way in tournaments you have a legitamate set of rules for him which noone will complain about.

And at the points youve put above, logan would be better, as he does all that and more for pretyt much the same points.

Fair doos for wanting to create your own character/ruleset though!

How about instead of making wolf guard troops how about a ability to upgrade any member of a squad into a wolf guard? That way each squad could have a sergeant esque member and still be add another wolf guard to it.

That's already in the Codex under the Wolf Guard section under "Pack Leaders"

My take was a little different. Based solely on the paragraph you posted from the codex. I'd say if Krom is tearing out throats(which sounds a little heretical), he's marked or he uses a power claw.  That aside, I think there's several cues you can use to choose a good person rule if you'd rather not build a "counts as" list.   Going by his Surname, I'd say Krom's visage is the most significant thing about him. Consider that when modeling.  To reflect this I would Implement a rule similiar to the Wolf Helm of Russ or Pelt of the Dopplegangrel but with lesser strength.  You could base it around personal challenges only like Lucas' pelt, which seems more in character, or you could make it all-encompassing like Ulric's Helm for shooting and such. There are precidents in other armies as well.  Monsters so fearsome that they intimidate their foes into underperforming.  Something like a -1attack or WS penalty seems fair.  I would keep this power on the weak side however since it is only in the eye of the beholder.

As a second ability, (Since all SW chars have several,)  I would focus on tactics.  Obviously WG play a major role in Krom's chapter.  Perhaps they function differently than other chapters.  Maybe they don't function as pack leaders.  You could draw out of previous codices perhaps.  Maybe they roll around in one singular squad 20 strong like in the last codex. Maybe Krom uses them as a personal retinue (think BT command squad.)  Maybe  you'd like to embrace the 6th edition tactics more.  Maybe make Krom's WG challenges relevant to the current fights.  Perhaps WG in Krom's company are tasked to go after objectives and do so tenaciously.  Maybe they get a bonus for the game if they get first blood or slay the warlord. Maybe they get FNP in close combat while in the opponents deployment zone or holding an objective.

Other options you could use: The Sunwolf; perhaps Krom excels at dawn raids and affects the rules concerning night fighting.  Or perhaps Krom often does field promotions as indicated and affects the force org rules. Maybe he can make a single WG unit count troops(trying to keep him less powerful than Logan.) Maybe they can be counted as HS or FA.  That's all the ideas I could come up with.

Here's what I think of when I think of Krom Dreadgaze.  Notice the Heraldry.

This is a Wolf Lord conversion done by Darren Latham, (google him if you want) that was featured in the previous codex.  It's a great model and I almost bought it when it sold.  I always liked the pose and the fact that hes got a bolter instead of a pistol.

I've been trying to work out rules for Krom Dragongaze for home play too. He has a larger number of Wolf Guard so one pack allowed as troop choice. Shouldn't be able to field a full Wolf Guard army as Logan Grimnar can. With his "Dragon gaze" bit was wondering if a reverse of Saga of Magesty would work or if points would need increased, enemies units within 6" of Krom must reroll successful leadership checks. Rather knew to playing this game so still learning rules, synergy & balance. Advice and thoughts are helpful
