Hyaenidae
In '05, I was on my second deployment to Iraq, teaching my new Soldiers about the joys of living in a hostile desert country. Brother Heinrich
Four here. And I'm never going back to either of those... lovely..... nations. My wife took a trip to India recently and said she wished I could have come and that we have to go back in the future. My Response: http://img.pandawhale.com/post-31074-J-Jonah-Jameson-laughing-gif-S-NWLY.gif For reference I did a 6 month tour in Pakistan. I'm fine never visiting that part of the world again. I like vacations where I don't have flashbacks thank you. Flint13
So I found that I am not a big fan of the FW apothecaries. They are super pretty and super detailed, but they have so many tiny, fiddly bits, it almost puts me off them entirely. I think I'll definitely be converting new ones like I did for Kyvr quite a few pages back. Anywho, new MK2 guy, new try at painting white, new lighting setup for taking pics, new avatar. Thoughts on any are more than welcome. http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PC260004_zps08128520.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PC260005_zpsbf53a3f5.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PC260007_zps3ddbe483.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PC260009_zps74dd97f0.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282556-savage-midnight-armored-up-an-rolling-heavy-for-etl-pg109/page/26/#findComment-3578638 Share on other sites
The_Chaplain
Anywho, new MK2 guy, new try at painting white, new lighting setup for taking pics, new avatar. Thoughts on any are more than welcome. Well the new mark 2 guy looks good, the white could use a little touching up though I think. As for the avatar, is that rapunzel from tangled recolored as a punk rocker girl? I dunno, I liked the female predator one a little more- much more intimidating. Or you could go with a disney villainess- like Maleficent, she'd fit in right at home with some Night Lords... ephrael
It looks like the wing on the NL icon on the shoulder pad isn't completely painted red? Is that a trick of the light or did you miss that spot on the bottom of the wing? Forté
Looks good Flint. Sword blade could do with a little work. And there's a mark on the blue material for your background ;) Nice photos. New set up works well. Net too sure one the profile pic. Hyaenidae
Pic set up is perfect. White is working out well. Told you mixing it a bit would help. Avatar is creepy. Armond
'05? I was working on Ft. Hood as contracted security as a way to get my contract to Kuwait a year later. I had been out of school for 5 years at that time. BTW heathens, the clock is slowly ticking towards me being home. On topic... Love your log, keep up the great work, the apothecary looks great! You do the VIII Legion proud! DarkVen
Again, I would advise keep the white parts light grey and add some white extreme highlights to it. Maybe I'm mistaken, and you did so already, but the point of that is to make white not so 'flat'. And although I see shadows here, it still looks rather 'flat'. Glass parts, on the other hand, looks really good. Blue parts overall look a bit rough, you should practice to get more accuracy. Again, metallics... did you wash it? Pics are good. Considering avatar: Heyo, Jinx, nice to see you here! http://cs311331.vk.me/v311331905/6ffc/OtPYsKVasnQ.jpg Seriously though, nice avatar. Koriel
The apothecary looks wicked in the NL paint scheme and I really like the glass effect you have on the different jars/ containers. The pic is nice and crisp, so I'd say the new set up is working just fine. I'm also a fan of the new avatar :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282556-savage-midnight-armored-up-an-rolling-heavy-for-etl-pg109/page/26/#findComment-3578686 Share on other sites
Barabbas Sogalon
I like the pic, the model and the avatar, though the eyes reminds me of someone I went to school with. How about adding some blood splatter to the apron for a mad surgeon look? sockwithaticket
I think that's your cleanest looking mini yet and as someone who loves that look I wholeheartedly approve. If you're looking to shade your white vallejo have a pale grey wash that I've found excellent. Alternatively their Game Colour range has a paint called Ghost Grey that's very pale but still grey enough to be highlighted by pure white. Flint13
Morning folks! @ Chaplain - I'll agree, I had kinda a hard time with such a large expanse of white. It confuses me And yes, she is recolored to look like Jinx from league of legends I approve of Maleficent's game plan, do not approve of her goofy horn hat. @ Mikhail - That is kinda odd isn't it? I'll make sure when I go back for his final touchups and basing. Thanks! @ Forte - I suppose it is time to step my power weapon game up a bit. Any good suggestions? @ 1000heathens - Thanks! It's super simple, not even a whole lightbox but I've gotten really good results so far. I agree, 25% astronomicon, 75% ceramite works *waaaay* better. I like my avatar! This from a guy who's avatars are all grimacing gentlemen with facial scarring @ Armond - Thanks! I'll do my best... 'cause you know, the 8th isn't too lenient with weak links... @ DarkVen - I am experimenting with white, I haven't done such a large space before. I like how his helmet came out, but you're right, the bigger space could use some work. Any suggestions? I normally shade the deep recesses in the folds, but on this mini the cloth is "pulled" rather tight. I feel I'm getting the glass/lens thing down pretty well. I'll be sure to touch up the blue before I base him. As for the bronze, it went Runelord, devlan mud, runelord highlight, ironbreaker highlight, seraphim sepia. Thanks for the help buddy! @ Koriel - Thanks! I do feel like fur and glass are the two things I do pretty darn well. That from playing and painting years of Warriors, Beastmen and Chaos Dwarves. @ Barabbas - I was thinking so. Maybe a few splatters from his gauntlet gone astray @ Sockwithaticket - I'm just starting to branch out and try some of the newer VGC myself actually. I originally tried his apron washed in thinned badab, but that didn't work out so hot. I'll give that gray wash a try when I can get by a hobby store. And just for fun, since my new avatar has had hilariously mixed results across forums, here are two new options that I would find acceptable: http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/harlequin_jinx__league_of_legends__by_gevurah_studios-d6wbdud_zps7cba8362.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/theshadling_league-of-legends-jinx_zpsbb76dd12.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282556-savage-midnight-armored-up-an-rolling-heavy-for-etl-pg109/page/26/#findComment-3578798 Share on other sites
Forté
Maybe try a few more highlights and the most raised edges. Then use some thinned blue wash and glaze it so it looks a bit smoother. Edit: I may need to nick the colour scheme from that bottom avatar option for my EC ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/282556-savage-midnight-armored-up-an-rolling-heavy-for-etl-pg109/page/26/#findComment-3578803 Share on other sites
Barabbas Sogalon
Nah, stick with the current avatar, sister. DarkVen
My suggestion is simple: keep the brightest part of the armor light grey. Don't add mix of white and light grey to make it brighter. I would rather use pure white to underline the edges and add minor light reflections to it. About 'folds' I do the same, but when it comes to big flat surfaces - I try to add some little detailing to it or even draw some additional folds, just to keep things interesting. Metallics - hm, strange... it still looks too shiny, and it lacks some shadows in the deepings... maybe the last wash was to thin? Or have you painted the deep places of metal parts with runelord after devlan mud? As for the avatar - it's your avatar; some kind of, eh... self-expression, I suppose? It's yours. Not everyone should accept it and I like the current one much better than the new options, to be honest. Ace Debonair
Well, that's a perfectly valid reason to have a fear of doctors. And another vote for the current avatar. Flint13
Alrighty guys. I was actually checking the awesome replies and helpful suggestions you all sent in while I was locked in my painting studio this morning. I resolved not to come out until I was happy with this goofy apothecary. So, with my normal sustenance (sushi), tension relief (foam roller) and artistic muse (snoop dogg) I was prepared to get the color white correct even if it killed me. My results? painting white. I like this better http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PC260002_zps51335128.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PC260005_zpsf4b75dfe.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PC260001_zps478e01cc.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PC260004_zpsfc7788e9.jpg http://i1290.photobucket.com/albums/b533/Flint1324/PC260003_zps6226b15d.jpg Would a *real* Nightlord let uniform regulations get in the way of his sneaky/stabby? NO I say! Plus I kinda wanted an opportunity to try my scout marines' camo style out on a few different surfaces. I really like how it came out A couple of other key points. I have found late night painting sessions make for mistakes. Like forgetting to paint gun holsters Plenty of touch ups abound. I re-washed the bronze so it looks less show-room polished, added a conservative little bit of blood splatter, and added two whole layers of highlights and a thin blue wash to his powersword. And thanks for the replies on the avatars as well. I actually passed on the other two as a little too skanks. So I'm glad we all agree my "creepy OCD girlfriend" one is the best. 'cept Heathens @Forte - Done and done. How's she look? @ Barabbas - Will do! @ DarkVen - How does he look now? Maybe a bit of a cop out on my part, but I like him. I rewashed the metallics, *heavy* this time. @ Ace - Hey! Good to see you back in. Nightlord physicians work on the "best walk it off quick" school of thought. @ Anaziel - Hah, it still throws me when I see someone born in the 90's who is legal to drink, drive and vote. But thanks, whipper snapper.
