Necron Ghost Ark spam

So, reading through some tactics posts about Necrons made me think about the last game I played. It was a friendly game, but my buddy likes to play competitively and had a couple of nasty tricks. The biggest concern was that, unlike previous games, he had exactly 0 neuron warrior models on the field.

Ghost Arks are open topped vehicles, and apparently have I think 6 gauss rifles on EACH side that can fire at two different targets. He had two of these, packed to the gills with like 10 warriors in each. Since it's open topped, he could fire with all 10 of those guys, plus the gauss array every turn. Sometimes both arrays if he had a second target. Those :cuss just parked behind his (surprisingly very melee oriented) elites, wraiths (who can tank just about ANYTHING) and then he had a couple of Monoliths in there as well. Because why not?

It was super frustrating. My whole list was ready to charge across the battlefield or drop in with pods, but the threat from those stupid ghost arks made me play way more defensively. I basically panicked and tried to run it as a gun line instead. Everything I sent forwards was annihilated by a freaking flood of gauss dice from the Ghost Ark. They took out a scout  bike squad, a ven dread, and a some tac marines.

Scarab vehicles smashed my rhino up like nothing, then chewed through a couple of land speeders.

His CC was actually not that great, despite the stupid coils that set my initiative to 1 and super-cheesy mind-shackle scarabs. I got lucky with the dice.

Overall, I think he just really knows what works against marines and was doing his thing. I was super surprised by his choices, but I thought a lot of it was WAY too cheesy. It's like they're built JUST to take out marines.

Any tips from competitive gamers what the heck works against such powerful, open topped Ghost Arks?

I actually had a las/las predator shooting at a monolith one one table edge. He was hiding one of his GA from it except one turn, but I failed to pen it. On the other end of the table, I had a dev squad with 2 lascannons & 2 ML, but it was getting a cover save and I was never able to pop it. Maybe he just got lucky…

I guess I was basically doing what I was supposed to, but he also had 2 Monoliths and some fire got split to those. I think in retrospect they were less of a threat than the GA were.

Tbh (as someone who plays Necrons) that's not a very cheesy or a very competitive Necrons list; I think the main problem is, as you say yourself, he panicked you. Monoliths for example are a pretty average choice nowadays but he got you to waste shots on them. You have the tools for the job and superior ranged firepower to him, you just need some target priority.

Take out the scarabs (a very under-estimated unit) and the wraiths first with template blasts (scarabs hate those) and massed fire respectively, they are the most immediate threat. You've then saved your tanks, stopped yourself getting tarpitted and bought yourself time. Throw your lascannons at the ghost arks during and/or after this; pen them to get the shields down and they will die far easier; engage the passengers in combat if you can to nullify their firepower [any decent CC unit engaging most units in a Necron army (save wraiths) should have the Nec player concerned, unless he is scarab tarpitting, the few saving graces like midshackle scarabs notwithstanding. Necs are just not built for CC due to low initiative. Decent CC units aside, even a bare bones tac squad has the edge charging a bare bones Nec warrior squad of the same size. They are easy to overrun too which is a huge achilles heel.]

Switch firing to his CC Elites if they are getting close. Only after all that then shoot at the monoliths. Yes their particle whips are anti-MEQ and a nasty weapon but you can get yourself cover saves and its range is only 24" if I remember right.

@ Aquamarine, all good tips. Thanks for that. I have played him before and usually I'm all about charging my tac squads and anybody else around into his warrior units. Heck, that's what I was planning to do. Yeah, I need to focus a lot more clearly on what the real threats are next time around. I feel a bit silly for handling it so poorly.

Man, don't beat yourself up over it. I've done it, we've all done it, you get hit by a new unknown list and the plan goes south. I'm sure you'll adapt thumbsup.gif
