...but the skeleton is too much to pass up.

Wait wait wait, I'm confused. Are you saying the skeleton idea is good or bad? "Too much" implies that it's the bad sort of ridiculous that doesn't loop back around to become awesome anyway, but "pass up" makes it sound like you're saying I should keep it.

Basically, that last sentence parses as: "The giant dragon skeleton idea is such a ludicrous, overblown example of Special Snowflake Syndrome that it would be criminal to NOT include it in the final version."

I think I've finally thought up an alternative noun. Instead of 'Sergeants', squads are lead by 'Hunt Leaders'. Some Hunt Leaders could be veterans who use their position to instruct and guide younger marines, while others find themselves leaders amongst their peers simply though a natural affinity for command.

You're overthinking it. The dragon skeleton is a great concept, but if you wanted to use Wyverns, dragons, or drakea or what not, there is proof in the lore that there are species of dragons amongst the stars.

Another would be relic and chapter artifacts being made from dragon remains. Like a great ossuary or boneyard.

LOVE the idea of their mouths smouldering and smoking as they eat. Imagine an Inquisitor seeing that? He'd wet himself! Love it.

Bone accents, dragon bone, sounds very good. The concept of a boneyard could work with the initiation rights, as well. There's a dragon "elephant graveyard" where dangerous predators lurk. The natives fear to go there, but not the Iron Dragons, who go, hunt, kill, and return after making something out of a piece of dragon bone. Or they take an ancient dragon bone knife as their only weapon. It's something to consider.

A not entirely relevant thought, but something that might help expand the idea of throwing themselves into the fire - Emerging intact proves that your fire is hotter than the dragon's, earning you the right to call yourself a Dragon.

The decentralized structure is a great idea, with brothers competing for missions. But, and it was mentioned earlier in this thread, Captains would be something special. The image it conjures for me is an almost-distant figure, someone above and beyond the regular Marines. It reminds me of Paul, from Dune. When the Fremen demand he fight and kill Stilgar to become their leader, and he points out that if they always kill the strongest, they only weaken themselves. The Fremen accept that Stilgar can beat any one of them, and Paul can beat Stilgar, so, that's enough. He doesn't have to kill Stilgar to prove it. I think it would be like that for the Captains. A Captain would have to be able to best anyone under his command, and besting a Captain would prove you could. The death of a Captain would probably kick off a Feast of Blades type situation, where instead of a sword the winner becomes the new Captain. Coming from Imperial Fists would also add that certain amount of control they would need to keep that kind of fighting from tearing the Chapter apart, I feel.

It's a little Iron Lords-y, but you could have ranks be metals. A sergeant is a Steel Dragon, Captain is Silver, and the Chapter Master is the Gold Dragon.

Hey love much of your ideas mate especially the breathing fire bit but not the tyranidy bit, even signed up on forum just to comment, and because you stole the name idea i was thinking of darn it.

If your struggling with names though check out a thesuarus, I've found loads of cool words that way. How bout calling a squad a claw or talon. very dragony

I'm too late. It's been done.

It's all in The Death of Antagonis. Everything Dragon-y you could do with the Space Marines, the Black Dragons do it. It's over. The Iron Dragons are dead. Even if I did follow through on them, they'd just be "Black Dragons with a different mutation and less angst but more narcolepsy."

I have no choice.

That's a shame. Are you going to recycle the Iron Dragons concepts or are you going to declare the IA dead and break away for a fresh article?

The paintjob and 'Imperial Fists Successors by way of the Crimson Fists' parts are still viable, but the Homeworld, Chapter History and Gene-Seed parts all need replacing.
