Gàidheal Rìgh
It's been a while since i was in 40k. I sold pretty much all i had and took up a few other hobbies instead with the money. After having a lot a new-born recently, i don't have a ton of time left to do said hobbies. Fortunately, i have a small amount of left over after bills and family, to spend a little on the good old 40k universe again! So with small amounts of time and money, i shall be building and hopefully finishing a small Salamanders force. Being inspired by the "InMemoriam" Project those guys have got going here, and needing something a little different than the usual GW models, i opted for 30k. To be specific, survivors from the Drop site Massacre. So without further ado, I already have a 5 man squad done. Took me.... 9? Maybe 10? Hours to complete them. They havny got a shoulder pad as I’m waiting for the Forge world Salamanders ones to get shipped here. And yes, they are the MKIII Iron hands Squad. They are survivors; they aren't going to be coming back in one piece after all. http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000201_zpsc61c44f9.jpg Heres the start of Cassian Dracos: http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000202_zps1f32bb47.jpg And the Next five man squad ready for the brush.http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000205_zpsae76db62.jpg And i'll just leave this here too! The not so distant past His vision swam in and out of focusand finally blacked out. He awoke again, looking up he struggled to focus hiseyes on the world above him. His visor cracked in multiple places made hisalready worse vision terrible. He trying to move his arms and felt his righthand touch his helmet, but not his left. Why was that? Had he been fullyconscious it would have been a stupid question. He managed to unclasp hishelmet and pull it free with some difficulty. The sound of explosions andshouting hit his ears. The sound of war rushed over him. He looked up and saw agreen giant. Its fist firing in short quick bursts, shell cases falling ontohis chest armour. The giant noticed his movement and bent down and grabbed himunder his shoulder, pulling him to the world above.“Up brother, you are not dead yet.” The giant said. His blurry vision sharpenedand his hearing became clearer, his mind un-fogging from the cacophony ofbattle He looked across the view that confronted him. All he saw was smoke, ashand flames, and his brothers stubbornly refusing the inevitable. He saw abrother go down to bolt shells to the chest, just to get back up to his kneesand try to crawl back to his allies. He saw an apothecary rush forward to pickhim up and struggle through the mud towards his own lines. His brothersconcentrating fire to cover the beleaguered duo.“Get back brother, provide protection to the more seriously wounded” the giantsaid. He looked up and saw that the giant was a veteran of his chapter. Suitedin Cataphract terminator armour, he was a sight to behold, one of thevenerated pyre-guard, bodyguard of his chapters Primarch. But why was he here? Why was he not with him? A sickness clutched his heart as he feared the worst. He pushed the thought out and left the embrace of the pyre-guard, and stumbledthrough the mud and rock. He saw a small group of his chapter about 10 metersaway and dragged himself towards them. The group was mostly made up of bothersin critical conditions. Apothecaries hovered around, desperately trying to keepthem alive. A few less injured marines had been posted to protect them, if theenemy broke through the defensive lines. He heard roaring jets ahead andthrough the smoke and ash he saw a thunder hawk. Its massive size blocking outthe sun becoming just a black silhouette, as it slowly landed. Its heavybolters already spilling rounds down range to cover itself. The apothecariesquickly moved to load the wounded up. He turned round and looked back. He couldsee his brothers falling back, even the pyre-guard terminator. There was barelyany squad organization or structure to the forces. Small groups had bandedtogether and were doing the best to cover each other and to make up theirmissing numbers. More terminators rallied to the single pyre-guard and theyprovided a massive hail of bolter shells, quickly running through the last oftheir ammunition to cover the retreat. He saw fewer and fewer brothers pass theterminators. His heart growing heavier and heavier, his mind becomes even moreconfused. Had his Primarch fallen? He couldn’t have, he was immortal. He washundreds of times stronger than even space marines were. Had he met the same fate as the Iron handsPrimarch? He couldn’t believe it to be. He wouldn’t believe. With the last of the survivors loading up he turned to walk up the ramp andtook his place on a seat to the left. The terminators slowly fell back, one byone, until the pyre-guard was left, and was struck by a plasma blast to hisweapon. His combi-stormbolter shattered into fragments. And his armour was severelyscorched along an expanding area. Pink plasma and molten metal spilled from hisarmour and sizzled horribly. The pyre-guard roared in defiance as he was metwith an enemy to match his might. A contempter dreadnaught of the Emperors Childrenlegion had stood to face him and was now bearing down on him. Its massive fistswinging in high and the pyre-guard ducked and lashed out with its thunderhammer, slamming against its armoured leg. It had little effect as it hammeredhome to thick armour plating. He swore he heard a laugh coming from thedreadnaught. It swung lower and the pyre-guard had to block the blow as hisarmour had little in the way off agility to dodge the blow. The two weaponsrebounded off each other like the same poles of a magnet, and massive sparksflew into the air, creating a miniature storm. Hammer hit shield and armour;fist hit a hammer and armour. Over and over lighting jumped between them. Thepyre-guard was on his last legs after the constant battle that had raged aroundfor the last age. He saw lights lighting up the ash clouds, and realized itwasn’t lights but flames. A shadow appeared at first, blurry, but sharpeningwith each second, the flames becoming closer and sharper. A massive roar was heardas the mysterious figure broke the ash clouds. It was a relic contempter of thesalamander’s legion, his legion. He recognized the dreadnaught too. A very oldand very highly respected brother, his service going back to the start of hislegion Cassian Dracos, his legion was not leaderless after all. Cassian swunghis fist down onto the back of the enemy dreadnaught, crushing its back platearmour, just as it was about the crush the pyre-guard. He grabbed the enemy andpunched his fist straight into the side of it, his fist tearing straightthrough. Turning himself round with the doomed machine, he tore out his fistand locked his fist back. With all the force of a thunderclap, he smashed hisfist straight into the helmet and activated his built in dread fire flamer. Theorange flame leeched into the dreadnaughts body and started to pour out ventsand holes. Cassian let his vanquished enemy fall the ground. Placing a heavyboot on top of his kill, he roared in defiance of the enemy that were nowfocusing fire after their stunned moment of the kill. Many of his brothersleapt out of the thunder hawk, their morale restored, bolters firing full autoand dropping their targets with deadly precision. Cassian fell back and pickedup the exhausted pyre-guard in both fists and carried him back to the thunderhawk. Brothers gave increased fire as the sight of leaving no man behind warmedtheir hearts. Tears filled his eyes. The day of betrayal had finally ended;many of his brothers were dead. He was one of a surviving few. He was finallyleaving the slaughter. Isstvan V had claimed its share of the dead, but littledid he know that he would see many more of his brothers and his allies die. Hewould be there when Tallarn fell. He would be there when the Luna base fell. Hewould be there when Terra was under siege, finally, he would be at the day werethe Emperor was finally laid low.And he would remember. And he would never forget. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284081-xviii-salamaders-legion-istvaan-survivors/ Share on other sites
Hyaenidae
.... And another poor soul joins the crew. Awesome work, man. I'm suprised that you went with the new IH mini's for you sallies, though I'm curious what they'll look like in green. Probably my only nitpick would be the Iron Hand cog above the sergeant's head. It might be worth cutting that down to de-Iron Hand the squad, or convert it into something more Salamander in appearance. Keep up the great work, man! Part of the ship. Part of the crew. They still need weathered and based. But that can come later. .... And another poor soul joins the crew. Awesome work, man. The boater
Your green is absolutely solid. Spot on! Great job so far. My only critique would bet that I think you should add some color to the white hare dude's hair. Not to change it because the bright white looks fantastic as a spot color, but just something to add some depth as to me it looks a tad unfinished. Overall I love what I am seeing. -The Boater Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284081-xviii-salamaders-legion-istvaan-survivors/#findComment-3537037 Share on other sites

Agreed on the hair, i dont have a wash to go over it with, and i don't trust my skills to water down nuln oil and slap it on either :P I'll see if i can fit it into my next order as i need more spray paint. Thanks for the compiments guys. I'm not to sure on the shoulder pads. Maybe a little to much colour going on there? With my forgeworld salamanders shoulder pads on the way, i also ordered a breaching shield squad and another IH squad, which they finally managed to ship. I also mamanged to pick up a Breaching shield space marine captain and a Praetor in terminator armour from ebay recently so they should be here in a week or two. I'll be looking to place another order for some terminators and another breacher squad. p.s. I love breacher squads. jeremy1391
They look great but they are begging for some battle damage and chipping effects.... Maybe even some "liberated" armor pieces.... Gàidheal Rìgh
I can only paint so fast, i've started the basecots of second squad. I'll post up some pictures once they have some highlights. The idea of having scavanged armour i like. And they really do cry for some weathing and chipping. But i don't trust my paint skills enough, just incase i ruin them. Anyone know of any easy and effective weathering tuts? Gàidheal Rìgh
Havny had an update in 5 days, so you'd expect i would have done something. So here it is. Second squad is done, and a tad bit of basing has been done. Bolters are in the works. and a few bits and pieces to add and paint. But the basic models are done. Santa clause somehow sneaked into my army here for some reason.... Group Shot! http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000212_zpsfdf55f89.jpg And individual Shots too!http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000213_zpsc7ff30e3.jpg http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000214_zpsb13d1859.jpg http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000215_zps4555c88d.jpg http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000216_zpsb26dfcd9.jpg http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000217_zps77099af9.jpg So whilst i wait on my other models to get here, i still have cassian dracos and weathering on the models to do. Which should be fun, trying to learn a whole new aspect... TheRecovery The star ship limped all the way to thespace dock, venting gasses and precious oxygen. Some gasses had lit, spillingout an endless fire. Its charred remains cracked against the dock as itsengines finally gave out. Airlocks engaged and locked against the various hullopenings. Cargo bay doors were opened, what little remained of them. The starship could be seen from the glass windows and panes. The mighty ship leechedfuel and gas. Its decorated and exquisitely detailed hull was broken andscarred. Its mighty cannons and broadside defences were shattered and exposed. Some blasts were so big and deep that individual decks of the ship could beseen by the outside. Its bow was bent and the mighty ship killing cannonsstored within were melted and black. It was a miracle the craft was still inone piece this far. Lights finally gave out as the ships systems shut down oneby one as the power generators failed and back-ups failing to take over. It wasthe carrier of death and things to come. Ornate, yellow clad marines rushed to standsentry on the broken dock as the air locks hissed open. Steam drifted throughthe cracks, lights flickered and whirred. Weapon emplacements hummed and kickedinto life. Apothecaries and emergency staff piled in, ready to rush forward.Bolters stood ready to receive every exception. Long seconds passed. The airlock slid open slow. As if the ship had taken so much damage, that this simple, small action was taking all of its remaining power. As the doors finally opened, and this lights cut off, a hulking monster appeared from the darkness.Illuminated by the lights, its deep green and fiery decorated armour toldeveryone who the survivors were. Its name plaque read “Cassian Dracos”. Adeeply respected and familiar dreadnaught contempter among the salamanderslegion and amongst many other chapters, his past glories were all but known bymany. He strode forward, carrying abrother clad in terminator armour that was rent and blackened. Behind him, stumbled and fell his brothers, all were broken, ever so broken. Their armourno longer battle worthy, missing limbs or torn open chests, many walked barely, but none were untouched by the horrors of what came to be known as the dropsite massacre. The sheer site of so many broken brothers laid low by thebetrayal was too much for the bulk of the emergency staff, being made up ofmere humans, they started to softly cry at the sight. They knew the greatnessof the broken warriors. The Salamanders were known to lay down everything intheir power to protect mankind. Whatever it took they used. They were known tobe almost suicidal in their defence against the enemies, just to protect humansthat could not defend themselves. To see the warriors that embodied defendinglesser people than themselves, was a massive blow the men that stood staring atthe scene that unfolded before them. Apothecaries ran forward, doing what theirduty taught them to do. Apothecary Hel of the salamanders was shattered. Evenhis enhanced body could only take so much punishment that had befallen hislegion; he struggled into the clearing, carrying two of his brothers in bothhis arms. He called for help as the Imperial fists medical staff rushedforwards. He received none as the amount of survivors came pouring out still. He knelt and laid down his brothers and quickly checked over them. Both were incritical condition, one having his chest shattered and the other had is secondheart torn out. He administered drugs to clot and stem the bleeding and triedto rise. He felt heavy, and feared to look back at the airlock. He looked upjust in time to see the imperial fists sentries drop their weapons and rushforward to help their apothecaries, and to urge the rest of the emergency staffinto action. In just a few minutes, the airlock was a make shift medical bay, most of the warriors being too unstable to move any more than necessary.Chaplains and tech-marines were called upon, to either administer final ritesand prayers to the dead and fallen, or to remove armoured plate or unlockfunctions of the suit. For the first time in what felt like forever, Hel satdown. He just slumped down and sat among his brothers. Physically exhausted andmentally broken, he tried to find solace in the deep recesses of his memories.Memories of his home, memories of family and friends, anything to keep him fromthinking of what had befallen his legion, for it pained him more than anything. But like the stoking of embers in a forge, his legion would grow again, justlike it always had. It would endure the anvil and be reborn in the fires ofwar. His legion would be bent in the coming months. And like all things thatdon’t bend, will break. In other news, i placed and order for something that wasn't Salamanders. And they really caught my eye and gave me some really tasty ideas.... They should be here, hopefully in a week... Maybe 2. So it may, or may not be a joint log! nurgling6688
Looks awesome! As far as the hair goes I might shade it with a brown instead of a grey just to add some warmth to the faces. I feel like salamanders are very warm, both personality wise and the from a volcanic planet wise, so this will add a bit to that. Pyromancer
I agree with Nurgling about the hair, and also with you about the shoulder pads being slightly too colorful. It might look better if you had the rims fully gold. But other then that its a great start. I was somewhat skeptical about the use of the Iron Hands squad, but you've really made it work. As for the weathering tutorials, you can find plenty if you just google something like 'Warhammer Weathering Tutorial' etc. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284081-xviii-salamaders-legion-istvaan-survivors/#findComment-3540977 Share on other sites
Gàidheal Rìgh
Alright, progress will be slow whilst I'm waiting on my 3 shipments to flesh out my salamanders. Yes 3. Living in NZ means shipping takes forever. So this will be slighty on the back burner till the shipments arrive. What's coming:Breacher squad3 MK3 Iron hands SquadsVulkan hes'tan model Apothecary Praetor in terminator armour Salamanders Shoulder Pads Also, i have a few squads of something else coming, as i already stated. I saw them and my mind went into overload about the ideas. In the long run, you can expect no more infantry. 30 Infantry models is enough i think.... BUT, there shall be 3 predators infernus pattern, and a thunderhawk. The thunder hawk will be the very last model to go into this army. So hopefully you can all wait that long ;)The models i have will be going under some conversion and a bit of repainting. I'll post pics of a test model tomorrow. Going to try and give them a hit and run feel to them, and use a few ideas and inspiration from sifting through various threads Looks awesome! As far as the hair goes I might shade it with a brown instead of a grey just to add some warmth to the faces. I feel like salamanders are very warm, both personality wise and the from a volcanic planet wise, so this will add a bit to that. Agreed, i did one as a test, and it came out a lot better. So i changed them all, looks a lot better. It was a great spot colour, as Boater said. But trying to stick to the salamanders personality as much as possible. I'll use white on my overall Force commander when i figure out who that will be... Aye, i thought there was. Then again, the gold is way to bright in my opinion, I'm going to need to dull it down more. They also need more embellishment too. They aren't decorated enough to fit in with the level of decoration the salamanders put onto their Armour. Especially flames and scales. Will have to fix that when i greenstuff stuff on. Back to the Horus Heresy books to look at the images! Gàidheal Rìgh
Greetings fellow survivors of Istvaan! May we crush the treacherous Warmaster together! Loving the models, could you please share how you did such awesome skin colour? I am still deciding whether to go Onyx or black. Would love too! Base coat it in abbadon black. Highlight the Edges. So noses, cheekbones, jaws, eyebrows with skavenblight dinge. Just do dots of stormvermin fur on the tips of the nose, chin, cheekbones and eyebrows. Just on the very raised parts. Then give a nice nuln oil wash over it. Not to heavy on the wash though. The two grey colours are close enough that they don't seem stark. And the wash will further blend them together. I demand pictures of the updated models I litrelly got no where last night except a few colour changes on a model. I was just way to tired. Think dark bronze now added to some helmets and kneepads, some of the edges are now bronze too. Oh, and they have some nice nordic runes on them too. I also shaved down the cogs on them all and started greenstuffing the cogs on the banners. And that's about as far as i got. I have work in a couple of minutes, so i'll post pictures in about.... 7 hours? :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284081-xviii-salamaders-legion-istvaan-survivors/#findComment-3545836 Share on other sites
Gàidheal Rìgh
Alright, here's what i hope is a tasty enough update for you all. I've only got this far on this model. Most are still in progress! So without further ado, here you are!http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000220_zpsddc708fe.jpg http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000221_zps51e9f49a.jpg http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000222_zps622a2aa0.jpg http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/P1000223_zpsb5c47a34.jpg Since they are survivors, This can either be days after the massacre where they are fighting guerrilla warfare style, or even long after that as they finally reach home and continue the fight, still using the tactics they found ever so helpful to their survival during the massacre as they are still so few. The others will get the same treatment. I'll be pressing to get them finished before the other squads arrive, but imma guess they won't be here for a while due to it being Christmas. Baaaah, i really need those bloody shoulder pads! The only thing I'm not looking forward to is painting the flames.... Never found it easy.... Gàidheal Rìgh
Small update as the holiday season at work completely took over my life. And when i wasn't at work, i was either sleeping or seeing to my son. Running on automatic currently, i have a few days off coming up soon, so i'll be pushing into it once again.Took away the cloaks and decided gold was best against the green than bronze. So back to the drawing board. I'm really conused as to how to proceed. They just don't feel salamander...y. Maybe it's just the missing flames and shoulder pads with chapter livery. Maybe it needs more teeth and scales! anyway, onto the other part of my reason to post.Good news! Orders finally arrived in NZ today! So I'll have them in two days hopefully. One is for a different project that i just had to do for some reason... The other is a few more iron hands squads, along with the he'stan model and finally some shoulder pads! Huzzah! With the amount of overtime I'm doing i've managed to squeeze out a bit more money that i usually have... Okay i lied, i buttered up my lass with some jewelry. So on the way are:Some spellcrow stuff. They have some really nice additions for salamanders. Stuff like scaled tabards and shields. I bought some big arse shields from them, and some tabards, along with some shoulder pads. See if i can make my models feel more like salamanders. If you haven't seen their stuff, here's a nice link!http://www.spellcrow.com/space-knights-c-9_38.html?str=20Ordered some auto cannons and a few bits and pieces for conversions. ordered the legion praetors too. Gàidheal Rìgh
The young captain they called him. Such a trivial name. He was young yes, but not as young as the average legionaries. He was, however, younger than the officers and more elite of the chapter. He didn't mind. He liked it. Made him feel like he had archived something very few do so fast. Some say he had been elevated to his rank to fast. He had beaten them all in trails of combat. He was a skilled fighter. Better than most, even by the elite of the chapter. He had hoped to make it into the sacred ranks of his primarchs bodyguard one day. It was every salamanders dream. To fight alongside their father, protecting him from whatever comes for him. Willing to lay their life down for him and to loose it if necessary. He out stretched his armored arm and held it there. A leather cloth was bound to his forearm plate. He always wore it. It a few seconds, an eagle landed on it. It's black and grey feathers ruffled in the wind and its twin heads swiveled and turned. Searching for anything important. He had inherited the eagle from a good friend in another legion, before being inducted into the salamanders. That legion was now on the emperors doorstep. He truly hoped that his friend had not turned traitor, and as bad as it was, hoped he had died on isstvan 3. Connecting to the eagles memory, he reviewed what it had seen. It had been lovingly augmented by his chapters tech marines, and was able to gather information should he need it too. Nothing of interest was noticed. The traitors hadn't moved today. All they had done was shell him. He produced a hunk of meat which the eagle took gladly and flew off as he threw his arm up. It gave a screech and disappeared into the night. He feared they would see the enemy before dawn. He reviewed the footage again a few more times, just invade he had missed anything. He then saw in the last half half hour of the footage, shapes moving between the broken buildings and rubble. They were hardly distinguishable in the dark. He sent a transmission to the survivors. And so it would begin again. http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/Youngcaptain1_zps657a6b4e.jpg http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/Youngcaptain2_zps28fc4356.jpg http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/Youngcaptain3_zps88665944.jpg And apothecary Hel has been started!http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac313/Feral_Scotzmen/Apoth_zps46563997.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284081-xviii-salamaders-legion-istvaan-survivors/#findComment-3560123 Share on other sites
