the damned artificer
Been kind of unproductive lately, but now I have finally started a project I have been looking forward to for a long long time. The duel between Ferrus Manus and Fulgrim have for a long time been something I have wanted to do, and when the miniatures came out for these two characters I couldn't help but feel a bit disappointed with the execution of this epic moment from the Fulgrim novel.I love the miniatures, and the attention to detail on both are amazing, but the display base just didn't do it for me, it was too over the top. I decided to go for something a little more like the scene from the novel cover and strip everything down so the two of them was in focus, instead of the pile of dead marines they were dueling on they would be battling out on a simpler field of battle and moved much closer together to emphasize the aspect of them actually fighting. I also opted for a bit of a height advantage for Fulgrim as is the case on the artwork, and went with a triangle irregular plinth that I have saved for a special project. Enough talk, on to the pictures! http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/FerrusManusVSFulgrim1_zps2b50202e.jpg The basic shape of the base is done, now comes all the detailing and the subtle changes needed to integrate the two into the scene completely. http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/FerrusManusVSFulgrim2_zps3e6450e7.jpg And the base without Ferrus, the only thing I have used of the original display bases so far is a section with some shattered storm shields that I cut out. That's it for now, comments and critique are very welcomed so don't hold yourself back Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284237-a-clean-cut-the-fall-of-the-gorgon/ Share on other sites
deathspectersgt7
Like this better than the base they come with less clutter more focus on the duel. Forté
Love the angle you have on the base. So much promise from the first pics. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284237-a-clean-cut-the-fall-of-the-gorgon/#findComment-3539990 Share on other sites
nurgling6688
This looks awesome, much more realistic of a duel Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284237-a-clean-cut-the-fall-of-the-gorgon/#findComment-3540027 Share on other sites
Dragonkin Arenis
So TDA is doing the duel between Fulgrim and Ferrus? If your HH Imperial Fists are anything to go by, this is going to be something worth watching evolve. Good choice on swapping out the base - whilst the Forgeworld-issued one is nice, it does distract the eye from the two titans duking it out. The scene should be more about these two brothers fighting each-other, rather than the pretty marines that cover the bases. I always thought that there should be more Iron Hands on the bases than Emperor's Children. The purple distracts the eye. the damned artificer
Thanks guys :D Project is moving slowly ahead and the base is soon to be finished for primer. http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/FerrusandFulgrimbaseprogress_zpsb14ddcf1.jpg And besides that I have been testing out purples (gotta love working in a hobby shop) as I have real trouble deciding how to go about painting Fulgy... So many choices  http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/20131210_175809_zpsb864679e.jpg I also have a few IH and EC models in the works, might toss them in here as well :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284237-a-clean-cut-the-fall-of-the-gorgon/#findComment-3543259 Share on other sites
MordentHex
I just ordered some of those purples myself today. How does the Heavy Violet work for you? Forté
Liche Purple personally Then again, I didn't have the Vallejo ones to try. Space Wolves grey works well to lighten the purple without is going powdery. And as the Pythons once said..."get on with it" We all want to see this Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284237-a-clean-cut-the-fall-of-the-gorgon/#findComment-3543862 Share on other sites
the damned artificer
I just ordered some of those purples myself today. How does the Heavy Violet work for you? I ended up going with hexed lichen instead as I found the heavy violet to be too cold looking. Liche Purple personally Then again, I didn't have the Vallejo ones to try. Space Wolves grey works well to lighten the purple without is going powdery. And as the Pythons once said..."get on with it" We all want to see this Hehe hexed urple came very close to Liche purple, which has been a favourite of mine from the old GW ranges since forever, so I should have guessed I'd love hexed lichen I'll definitely try that trick with a bluish grey out mate, thanks :) And now for a wee update: I have a bit more progress on the choice of purple, I think I'm getting there http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/Fulgrimprogress1_zps5f3afd52.jpg http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/Fulgrimprogress2_zpsd1bdf76a.jpg Not entirely happy with his eyes yet, but that'll get fixed at a later stage. And the base is done and basecoated http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/baseprogress_zpsff17aa9a.jpg Moving slowly on, hopefully after all this Christmas is over I can find some more time for this project. Capt.Valefor
Very nice, I have to agree that having the two of them in such close proximity and the height difference is much more convincing as a battle. It looks as though Fulgrim is about to deliver the final killing blow. Looking forward to seeing them painted. Veteran Sergeant
While I can't imagine anyone ruining such an expensive model, I always kinda hope someone will redo the Ferrus model and give him his proper weapon, the power wrench. ;) j/k. I'm really liking that base. Bark like that really does make a great stand-in for rock at that scale. Forté
Have to admit to not being a fan of the current GW range of colours. They seem creamy to me and the hexen purple just isn't dark or rich enough for my taste. Yours is looking slightly metallic on Fulgrim. Must be my dodgy eyes or my phone. With the eyes, maybe add a little darker shadow underneath the eye and a very dark thin line across the top of the eye socket itself. Should make it look a bit more natural. the damned artificer
Thanks guys and happy 2014 to all of you :D I have decided to fix the eye problem(still needs the iris ofc), as I had to add some more depth to the hair anyway. I also have Ferrus' head almost complete. http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/WIPJanuary64_zps16fae003.jpg The base is also done, and work is moving along on the minis themselves. http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/WIPJanuary62_zps77610ab7.jpg http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/WIPJanuary63_zps3e3a9f45.jpg And a look at my organized mess, this is actually the tidiest my desk has been for a while :P http://i535.photobucket.com/albums/ee354/SteffenSJensen/The%20phoenix%20and%20the%20gorgon/WIPJanuary61_zpsfbab6bac.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284237-a-clean-cut-the-fall-of-the-gorgon/#findComment-3561498 Share on other sites
