Managed to polish off some more of the Marines today...

A couple of HQ characters - I guess this might be my Chapter Master on the left?

And that's nearly all of my Marine infantry done, now!

These are lovely, and I confess it's been a while since I looked in this thread - so I had lots of eye-candy to catch up on! :biggrin.:

A few thoughts popped into my head as I got myself caught up, although I don't know how relevant any of them may be at this point:

> Rather than press-moulding Terminator Honours, take a look at the multipart plastic Commander and Sternguard kits (and the plastic Teminator kit too actually). There are lots of Terminator Honour pads and decorative dangly Cruxes that could be used with very little effort on your RT marines, and which would save you a fair bit of work.

> An indistinguishably good match to the old Hawk Turquoise that came in the white flip-top hex pots is Privateer Press P3 Meridius Blue - it's even made by the same company that GW used to use. If you are feeling lazy and want a highlight for it, P3 Arcane Blue is a shade lighter, although you can just add a dab of white or ivory to Meridius Blue of course. For shading, a dab of P3 Coal Black works wonders.

> Do you have any of the old RT-era Scouts or the Games Day Captain to complement the Terminator Captain? I think they'd fit your models perfectly!

I'm very much looking forward to seeing more as you complete it. :smile.:

Thanks, that is exactly the reaction I am after :)

Major, great advice, thank you. I actually already used quite a lot of Sternguard shoulder pads amongst my Veteran squads. Part of me would have liked to give every Veteran the Crux Terminatus but part of me wanted to keep lots of intact RT models, too. The paint tip is worth checking out, I'll need another pot to finish all the tanks and banners and so on; I mixed the last lot using Coat d'Arms Hawk Turquoise, which was too bright and clean as purchased.

Looking forward to making a big pile of plastic Mk I Rhino parts and sorting them out into a motor pool. Hoping to give every squad a transport and still have one of each tank variant, too...

While I was on a roll I quickly painted up these two Servitors I had around. I think they came out well, I'd be tempted to get some more in future...

And just for fun, here are some quick snaps of *most* of the painted Marines on the plastic trays they are currently shelved on...

<whispers> total army shot, on terrain...

I agree and second the motion.

I have also found my old RT Dreadnought too and this has inspired me to work on him when I start my next IEV vow.

Cambrius

Okay, okay, you'll get that when I have

a - finished the army

b - made some terrain

Next year, sometime. I'm tempted to set a target date but that'll result in disappointment ;) Terrain boards will involve working out in my garage, so that'll be next spring at the earliest, sorry.

In the meantime, I'm working on my squad of Legion of the Damned. A nice change of colour scheme.

That could also be said to be what I'm aiming for!

As a special respite just for you, here are some Legion of the Damned...

Had a couple of choices to make here... mostly, the flames. Most people paint them red out to yellow, as opposed to yellow out to red. I've opted for the more "realistic", latter option. I also went with bright yellow instead of a more "white" flame, because I think it looks more distinct from the bone. Any thoughts on that?

The other choice was how / whether to highlight the black. I started painting the bone very early on. which ruled out drybrushing the black, really, and I started on a grey edge highlight and didn't like it. So the black is left as flat black. It's easy, and I'm telling myself it makes them seem more otherworldly...

Plainly, the heavy weapons are magnetized and swappable. I used the meltagun as I just don't like one piece marine with flamer model from this range. Finally, I ran out of Legion shoulder pads so the heavy weapons arms have plastic ones with greenstuff sculpted flames, I think they look okay?

This guy:

A very early Ordo Malleus Inquisitor model.

I thought painting him in Hormogaunt Purple armour and equipping him with a bone sword was kinda ironic...

You're going to get a lot of WIP Tanks for the foreseeable future, sorry...

Already a lot of work done to get this far - here we have 9 MkI Rhino chassis. Each has been broken down as far as I could get them, extensively filled and sanded down, and then reassembled to this point. There are a lot of missing and broken components, so these will be a patchwork of homemade, repaired and modern bits when they are finished.

Since taking this picture, I've started to assign roles and done further assembly. So far the planned load-out is:

1 Whirlwind

1 Vindicator

1 Predator Destructor

1 Baal Predator

3 Rhinos

That leaves two spares for now - one will probably be a "command" rhino or a Razorback, the other another Predator, but yet to commit.

As I'm leaving the Predator turrets loose, and thus interchangeable, I'm thinking of magnetizing the sponson weapons so I can swap them around.

This is lovely work. I find that oldhammer is usually goodhammer, and it's wonderful to see it painted up nice.

Also, it took me an embarrassingly long time to recognize your name from Carpe Noctem. Hello again! (That reminds me, I need to get back there to restore Bat Country, since the photos all kicked the bucket.)

This army is so freaking cool, I have a number of old tactical marines myself which I use to use as death company (an idea I had years ago that the oldest marines would probably be the craziest most bloodthirsty)

I also have the librarian with the big sword (love that model) a couple of techmarines and an old bike I used for a Librarian bike conversion, as well as a few of the old tanks.

sadly I'm not much of a painter but I did repose a bunch of the tactical marines to really give them some character

Hello Calyptra! Yes, this photobucket nonsense is a pain in the backside, I've backed up all my PB pictures but repopulating every plog is going to be too much work I fear :(

Owen, that's a good idea for how to use a small number of old marines. If only I'd stopped at a small number... never give up on painting, Brother. It can be hard to find the time, and it takes a little practice, but Marines and tanks and so on can be tackled effectively with a spray can, some washes and a couple of colours. It's only this daft two-tone colour scheme that makes my paint method any more complicated than that ;)

Some tank construction progress...

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC08733_zps3imgovyn.jpg

Lots of test fitting and green-stuffing of gaps. The sponson guns are indeed magnetized, more on that later. I made modified exhausts because the standard ones don't really fit on a Vindicator and I don't have enough of them as it is. A lesson I learned from the first three I built last year is to paint things in sub-assemblies, which is not my normal method and I'm itching to glue this all together...

Looking good, and that's a lot of tanks!

Is that tank on the right going to be a twin-HB Razorback?

As for the LotD, they're also looking very smart. :)

To return briefly to your comment on which round the flames are painted on the LotD models, I think the simple reason they are painted red-to-yellow on all the Studio examples is that the outer edge of the flames is then yellow, which has the most contrast against the black armour. Doing it the other way around means that the outer colour is red, which contrasts less against the black.

Haha thanks, I used to use them when death company with bolters spam was viable (pretty cheesy i know :ermm: ) I have 30 ish although I don't think they are technically RT they're the multicoloured plastic "squatting" ones (hence reposing some)

Painting is definitely a time issue, most of my armies are from ebay so would require the massive project of also stripping them I do kind of intend to get my marines sorted at some point though!

My other issue is I really like both blood angels and dark angels and the mess of colours my space marines currently are a lot of stuff can just be used for either :teehee: I just cant decide how to split them and actually get both armies painted up properly lol(especially the tanks! who gets what is a huge issue lol)....terrible I know....... I have done some ....passable painting in the past I think a few washes and drybrushing and some of my characters would probably look quite good!

You could try mixing a little turquoise into black for your Legion of the Damned highlights, not too much though unless they want to be Tron extras

I love the old school vibe, having had to give up my 2nd ed army project due to various reasons it's good to see some love for old minis.

  • 2 weeks later...

Held up by the weather at the moment. I've got half a dozen of these ready to paint, but haven't been able to get outside to spray them. Very frustrating.

On another front, I've finally got around to ordering more Unicorn decals for my Marines, so we're a step closer to completely finishing this :)

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC08897_zpsnnqv9g9e.jpg

Just a quick picture to show that something has happened - got outside and managed to spray this lot black, white and half-turquoise despite the cold (and my cold!). Quite a lot of tedious base coating to go on with, but it's gonna happen :)

Holy crap! I love the RT era style pastel color scheme! You've totally captured the essence of the late 80s-early 90s armies! This is like a trip down memory lane for when I got into the hobby in 1990.

Good job sir, good job!

So much retro awesomeness in one thread!

I've gone half retro bringing back old metal land speeders from 2nd ed, but now I need to go find some RT era stuff to add into either my Deathguard or Emperor's Children!!

Are you shading the tanks by brush?! Oh man all that wash application will hurt! But it'll be worth it!!
