Not necessarily prone, just sighting down his rifle would be nice. The kneeling sniper is cool, but a variant with weapon raised would be nice. In fact, more than two sniper poses would be nice, would make for a dull unit  of five. I'm sure there are more poses for ratling snipers, or Eldar Rangers, from the same period.

So errrm what the heck colour should a Space Marine captain's helmet be anyway? I'm going with white at the moment...

Hmm, I would say the standard colours of his chapter? Maybe red due to being a Veteran? I always thought that Space Marine characters kept a plain helmet, and let their back banner or chest emblem identify them, like Medieval heraldry?

That depends on how you envision your chapter denoting veterans and officers. One solution could very well be having white helms, but then again could another solution be to leave them as they are and have them be picked out by equipment instead.

Per Index Astartes, Sergeants have red helmets, Veterans have white, and Veteran Sergeants have red with a white stripe. There are, however, numerous examples of Codex Compliant Chapters that differ from this. For example, from the Badab War books, the Salamanders use combinations of gold to pick out Sergeants and Veterans (on pauldron rims and helmets).

For yours, I can see something like Sergeants are all white from the mid-helmet right, Veterans white from mid-helmet left, and Veteran Sergeants all white helmets.

Or you could go full RT Era and not use color to signify rank, but icons:

Ah yes! That last picture is very familiar now I see it.

I wish I'd thought this through from the start. I suppose I set myself up for a problem when I made the white stripe part of the uniform.

I quite like the idea of halved helmets. Maybe I'll do veteran sergeants half white, half red. I'll probably only have a couple, so no big deal anyway.

Captain looks like this for now...

Yes, he's in Mk VII armour! I had this model as the Captain of my 1992 army, so he's back. :)

Thanks for the positive feedback, it's always nice to know you're not getting it totally wrong.

I liked the white cloak, so went with the plain helmet. I think he'll stand out just from being in different armour, and one day he will have a fancy back banner and fancy markings to further distinguish him.

That captain is one of my favorite old school models. I still have mine, but I'm not willing to cut him up to match the size of my plastics.

Yeah, that would be a tough call. Not the rarest of models, but I prefer not to convert old stuff - I even paused to think about it before I drilled a hole in the back pack to add the banner pole.

I bet he'd look good though! :wink.:

This just came up in one of my eBay searches:

A twin rhino! Not a great execution, but there may be something in the idea to look at another day?!

Wasn't there a quad Rhino back in the day?

Here's where we are now then:

Having a sort out of my miniatures has allowed me to reorganise my squads a bit, so this month I have been painting a mixture of models. This bunch allows me to complete two tactical squads and a Devastator squad...

I always  had soft spot for the RT dread and that multi melta guy. I'm loving this army project, it's so well done and nostalgic!

A quad rhino? You mean 2 wide and 2 deep, or 4 wide? The former seems most sensible. Or least crazy, anyway.

Glad you like my project, that multi melta model is one of my favourites too, along with the heavy bolter.

No new models of my own to show you , hobby progress has been hampered by a family illness. I haven't even decided what to do next!

Hail Brothers!

It has been a few months since I posted here. Lots of tedious reasons for that which I won't bother you with.

BUT

I have just signed up for this Kickstarter which aims to supply custom decals INCLUDING WHITE PRINTING:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1388656630/fallout-hobbies-custom-decal-shop

I'm hoping that this will force me to finalise a Chapter badge for my Space Marines, and Kickstart my efforts on the project.

Oh, I have made one recent purchase - someone sold me an old Dreadnought cheaply on ebay because it had no arms. Sweet deal when you've made yourself a wide selection of extra magnetic weapon mounts! :biggrin.:

Age of Smegma keeps making me depressed, so I have put all my fantasy WIP models away for a bit and will be working on some proper Marines instead...

So I've spent the weekend assembling models and bases, first up my Jump Assault Squad

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC03176_zpstu5jpfdd.jpg

And now some more Scouts, as I liked the first one I painted

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC03177_zpsk3vis5wj.jpg

And finally, the aforementioned new Dreadnought

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC03181_zpsoenvgrib.jpg

I made a modification to the right knee to allow a less static pose than normal, for a bit of variety.

Lots of messing around to do with these still - base details and tidying up a few bits and bobs - before they get near any paint.

Great work on those Marines!! Wish I was that good at converting!! :sad.:

Do you by any chance have a photo of that Captain in bare metal? Or remember what GW called him? I'm wondering 'cause I think I might have him as well, but I was using him as a jump pack character...

Still looking fantastic, brother. I'd also like to put in a vote for how cool the multi-melta dude is/was. I loved him back in the day and I still do now. He just oozes menace.

It looks like you maybe brushed that dread? It's almost like brushed nickel or something. I miss working in lead sometimes. Not pewter, mind you, but lead. That repose does wonders for the old dread.

Looking forward to those chapter symbols. I also pledged for the KS and I'm excited to see how they work out.

@Charlo, thanks, I think those huge jump packs add a lot of interest and drama to the minis, as well as the interesting poses.

@Noble Korhedron, there's actually not much conversion work here. One damaged head got replaced with a plastic helmet, the two "converted" models are actually slightly older marines which were always intended to use separate plastic arms. I decided to include them because there are so few chainsword wielding sculpts among RT era marines. The Captain is "Space Marine Captain with Terminator Honours" and you can see him here: http://www.solegends.com/citcat1991a/cat1991ap006smcommanders-00.htm

I think there is a similar, later model which has Chapter specific badging?

@Vel'Cona, thanks, I'm glad you approve

@JeffTibbets, when I saw the KS I did half expect you to be behind it! The dread was burnished like that when it arrived - maybe just from being handled a lot, maybe it was brushed when it was paint stripped. These models are a lot softer than modern metal, you do have to be careful not to mark them if you slip with a knife or file. The knee mod was really simple, I wish I'd thought of it before.

Haha! I really should have done that KS when I first thought of it ages ago, but frankly I like my day job and I think it would be way too much work to do as a side thing, so I never really pursued it. I said it before: as long as SOMEONE does it, I'm happy. Someone has, so now I'll support them. ;)

Meanwhile, I hate my day job but don't have the art or computer skills to do the added-value part of the project. I'm glad you signed up for it, cos I spotted it at the last moment by blind luck!

Right on. It would take a lot of work, especially as Fallout's offering layout and even pencil-to-vector services. That's a lot of grunt-work.

Today my new transfers from Fall Out Hobbies arrived!

Without further ado:

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC03471_zpskehvhngy.jpg

Just cut one out roughly, used water to float and place it, then half a dozen dabs of MicroSol to get it to lie flat. This hasn't been varnished or dullcoted, just straight onto the model.

I'm pretty pleased with this result!

Some observations...

It took a lot of MicroSol to get the decal to fit onto the curved surface - there was a lot of creasing to start off with, but it has settled down nicely

I made poor choices on decal size - this is the smallest size I picked of eight! None of them are small enough for my Scouts' shoulder pads, in fact I'll have trouble fitting them on any flat areas on the Dreads and bikes. The bigger ones are likely to only get used on large vehicles, banners and maybe future scenery projects.

So far I'm very happy with the company and their product. My design is fairly simple, being one colour only, but the detail is crisp and the white really dense. My three sheet of decals will do my whole army and more (or would do if I'd got some smaller sizes!).

I think I might put together another sheet, with some smaller unicorn heads and perhaps some unit / company type markings. With a bit more care and planning I should be able to sort out everything I need for a relatively small cost.

Recommended without reservation at this point :biggrin.:
