Thanks very much, I hope that phase 2 of the army is as pleasing to you :)

The original metal back packs are quite rare and thus quite expensive - there are maybe 20 in this army, but in the end I took the decision to buy a job lot of the Forgeworld resin packs, which look pretty much like the old plastic RTB01 packs. This was still expensive but less time consuming than hunting for the others a few at a time.

It is pretty crazy that an RT marine without a pack is worth less than the pack - it's almost worth buying any RT models that you spot for sale with the original packs and splitting them up... ;)

Currently debating whether to carry on modelling and create a huge pile of models to batch paint, or to set to with the brush. I know it's all going to have to be painted at some point, but that box of Landspeeder parts is calling to me, too... oh, any thoughts on bases for an old metal land speeder? 50mm or 60mm round maybe? Or might one of these new-fangled oval bases all the kids are using look good? ;)

Thanks! And I have to say what you are doing is as brilliant as it is insane ;)

Meanwhile, I have made myself put the bits boxes and miniature pile and tools away so that I stop assembling things and start painting... I've got about 30 marines and scouts and a dread on the desk, that's enough to be going along with. My first problem is that the specially mixed turquoise paint I made a year ago has gone completely solid so I spent half an hour "ruining" the other half pot of Hawk Turquoise which I had left!

This will probably disappoint, but to get back into the swing of things I'll be working on the most basic marines (a few extra heavy weapons and so on) first to get back into the swing of things. Let's make sure I can get those to look like the rest of the army before I start tackling more characters and elites and so on...

And we're finally back with reinforcements!

First out of the drop pod, it's two more Techmarines

and, to accompany them, some Scouts

Cheers!

I feel like I should remind people of the state of play with Chapter badges and other markings - basically, I got some really nice decals done, but they are mostly too big to go on all of the Marines (oops!) - this means only about half of my models are getting decals at the moment. One of my future jobs is to order some smaller ones, along with all those other pesky markings (unit type, squad number and so on). In the meantime, here are some more Brothers with some heavy and special weapons...

And if you'll excuse a little silliness, here's my fourth Dreadnought...

http://i1147.photobucket.com/albums/o541/Shadespyre/WARHAMMER/Space%20Marines/DSC07988_zpsagw5to2p.jpg

I don't believe quad autocannons is actually a legal weapons fit, but I like the "BattleTech" feel of this combination so wanted to take a picture of it.

This is also an experiment with a "Veteran" Dreadnought paint scheme. Feedback is appreciated.

Next up: probably a squad of Sternguard. But I've also got some more modelling I feel I need to get started on, so we'll see what comes first...

  • 2 weeks later...

Wasted a lot of time recently sculpting new parts for old models and trying to cast copies of them... I think it's going to be quicker just to sculpt / convert everything I need as I go. I've never had the patience required to make really good moulds and it's a long, messy and expensive process to keep getting wrong. The main upshot is that my bikes will now be getting the old plastic marines (mostly) as riders, which I was hoping to avoid.

Thanks, glad you like it. As all the weapon options are magnetized I can field it in a more sensible configuration, too.

Today I hope to convert up riders for the four bikes I've previously painted. Most of the work is changing the pose of arms and legs. Seems ridiculous now that the original bikes had all sorts of interesting riders but not a plain vanilla gunner pose, and only two rider poses for simple brother marines. Though to be fair that is reflected in the whole Rogue Trader space marine range...

A long time coming - bikes with bikers!

These are the bikes that were assembled and painted ages ago, but now with crew. All converted from the old RTB01 plastic marines, so far.

I've got quite a few more bikes, so you may yet see a bigger squad and maybe a character or two on them. We'll see. But for now, I'm working on some veterans...

Sternguard... mix of one piece Rogue Trader models and a few later ones with plastic arms, as usual.

Still haven't decided what colour to paint the helmet of an elite Sergeant, so for now they are staying white.

The two combi-weapons are magnetised, so the plasma and flamer are interchangeable with a graviton gun and a melta...

Thank you, I'm really happy with how the plain white helmets look.

I've still got some more models made up ready to paint, but not really complete units. I might allow myself another "modelling break" and assemble something fun...

Wow. Vincent Blackshadow bikes!

Thank you Brothers. Happens to be my birthday today, so I am feeling nostalgic for many things - Vincent Black Shadows, Eddy Dreadnoughts, my lost youth...

Anyway, now on the desk we have a classic Landspeeder (and what an assembly nightmare that has been!) and some heavily converted / kit bashed Vanguard. Hopefully I can paint those up in the next week or so :smile.:

Vanguard veterans - just six of them for now, as it was hard enough work creating these few. I really love the two poses with the two handed power axes and wanted to build a unit around those.

For the record, the Apothecary had been "struck off" with a file when I purchased him, but I plead guilty to the other conversions. You would not believe how much work it was to re-build that shaggy-pelted-proto-SpaceWolf into an "ordinary" veteran! Would have like to give them all Terminator honours but the sheer amount of vandalism and work involved put me off.

And now here's an original Land Speeder, in all its wobbly metal glory

I need to do some more work on getting the big decals on the side blended into the metalwork underneath. To be honest, if I'm going to add flags to those aerials, the extra Chapter badges may be obsolete. We'll see. It was not easy to put together, but I like the result enough that I'm going to tackles two more. Possibly with variant weapons.

Next? I have the makings of a 5 man command squad, and finally the 32mm bases for my Terminators, so assembly and basing of those units is probably coming up this month...
