Gaunt's Ghosts

I'm not trying to sound like a jerk, because I really don't know, but what is the interwebz socially acceptable moritorium on spoilers? We're talking about events in Sabbat martyr that have been out for nearly 11 years now.

Oh, trust me, it has passed some time ago, and I don't think you are being a jerk.

I only brought it up because people in this thread have said they are starting the series for the first time. Just seems polite to give that moratorium a temporary, localized extension for their benefit.

You definitely were not being a jerk, and normally I would agree with you, but since the Op had just started the series, everyone else used spoiler tags as a courtesy. Definitely keep going with the conversation, just spoiler tag it so that us who are late to the party don't cry at seeing our favorite characters fate before we read it ourselves whistlingW.gif

how do you pronounce "mkoll" exactly my brain never knows what to do with it tongue.png

For me it's like Macaulay without the ay. Same as Mac Venner. If your interested in the "correct" pronunciation google the many Abnett question videos. He's bound to mentin him somewhere in there.

I say it like I would McCole.

Yeah, between McCole and MiKohl.

Although a few years old, interesting nonetheless for those new to the series:

"The subject of accents is an interesting one that I probably shouldn’t get drawn into, as my personal theory is that it should be up to the readers to decide what works best for them. This is certainly my policy when it comes to pronunciation of names (Nik and I even argue about how certain character names ought to be pronounced, and you wouldn’t believe how many variations there are for Ravenor, for example. My policy is that the correct way to pronounce it is the way you pronounce it). Having said all that, I thought I’d volunteer the following: I have always imagined the Tanith to be, essentially, a Celtic regiment. In my head, that places them more Welsh or Irish, but there’s just as much justification for them being a little Scottish or even Cornish, or something more exotically Celtic. "

Dumbledore dies :P

Oh and Tanith actually do battle simulations!!! One of the best things described in the book IMHO

Speaking of Mkvenner....

I don't think he's dead, remember the part where Mkoll spots a figure in the distance wearing something resembling a Tanith cloak? Don't remember exactly but it was something like that.

See:

Unsure if sarcasm - but at no point do I remember reading that, and a check on the Lex and GG Wiki make no mention of his death.

IIRC, his death is believed to be confirmed by the Imperials and they do use his name to spook the Chaos forces, but there is no true, solid proof that he died. Just that the people who followed him think he's dead.

Considering that they trained, fought and lived with him, wouldn't they know? The thing that muddied it was that one of the stealth guys had a Tanith cloak and Mkoll, who may be a descendant of Ollanius Pius, kept sensing him nearby.

But then, wouldn't he when he is surrounded by people trained by him? People who idolized him and imitated him? Wouldn't he see some of Ven in them, but maybe not understand the feeling?

And wouldn't, if he was dead, one of his students take his cloak? Both for its status and for its use?

And wouldn't a regiment that has lost everything twist their perception of reality so that they can keep the hope that one of their heroes remains alive?

@Cormac

Guess that's part of the mystery. You can believe he's dead, I'll still think he's alive! Dan might bring him back later who knows.

Speaking of bringing people back, I'm still waiting to see Milo again. I really never understood his relationship with the Beati. He had romantic notions toward her vessel but what was it after? Confusing.
