Casting quality of the Storm Eagle

The subject of Forge World's casting quality in general could be a topic in itself; it's a pet peeve of mine that FW will produce such wonderful kits, and then handicap them with poor production quality. Don't get me wrong, they do a lot right, and many flaws are just part of the resin casting process that you try to minimize, but it's impossible to completely remedy. Other flaws really seem to be rushed production and poor Quality Control, and it's those that leave a bad taste, personally. But I digress...

Have a look at the step-by-step done by Heavens Eagle over at Dakka: A Detailed Quality build of the Forge World Storm Eagle. The builder takes it much farther than the average person might, doing modifications, conversions, and improvements to the kit; but they also take the time to really show all the major parts right out of the box, what condition they're in, and just what it took to correct them. The Storm Eagle really seems to be an advanced kit that requires some serious adjustments to assemble correctly.

The series of articles are also really good for general model assembly information. The author does a very good job of showing what tools and techniques they used throughout the build. Lots of it leans more towards the advanced builder, since it's such an in-depth build, but there is plenty of good information that can be used on any build project.

That thread has me really reconsidering a Storm Eagle for my dudes. Might just pick up an Assault Ram instead...

That is an excellent thread. Thanks heaps! Definitely makes me realise that a Storm Eagle (and probably a Fire Raptor) is going to be a much bigger project than I thought it would be!

I got a Fire Raptor recently and, after calls to FW, use of a hair dryer and many many hours of hot soapy water and a toothbrush, I have admitted defeat and taken it into my local GW store (the manager there is a great guy) and he's going to build the first bit for me so I don't end up ruining the thing.

I would have loved to have done it myself, but in this case, I would sooner have a Raptor that is built correctly by someone else rather than one with mistakes built by me

And to be honest: Even with much less effort and just a blow dryer or some warm water the storm eagle can look pretty good. It just will not look as perfect as the one from the linked thread. Even with the tools that level of quality would be outside my skills ;)
