twopounder
Alright, I finally got my order. One thing I like about finally holding the physical model in my hand is that I can see where I need to improve and where I might have pushed too far or not far enough in terms of detail. Sadly, one of the antennae for the auspex broke off during shipping. Anyway, here is a preview of the first round of custom bolters: This is how they arrive: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/GunMonkey/Space%20Marines/IMG_20140121_145307_515_zpsd9a5e6a8.jpg Broken Auspex: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/GunMonkey/Space%20Marines/IMG_20140121_145812_124_zps1ce439ac.jpg Box magazine front: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/GunMonkey/Space%20Marines/IMG_20140121_151300_201_zpsd48c4fc5.jpg Box magazine side: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/GunMonkey/Space%20Marines/IMG_20140121_151310_123_zps46ec0675.jpg For some reason, the box magazine didn't have the magazine attachment on it, so it won't lock into the bolter like the other magazines. I'm not sure why, and I'll have to review my file to see if it was omitted somehow. Bolter with reflex sight and standard magazine in place: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/GunMonkey/Space%20Marines/IMG_20140121_152759_251_zps4166190a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/GunMonkey/Space%20Marines/IMG_20140121_152814_928_zps8dda3d44.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/GunMonkey/Space%20Marines/IMG_20140121_152829_110_zpseef0030d.jpg Some things of note - The FUD material that shapeways prints with seems to have changed. It's softer than the last batch I received and much more transparent. The previous material was a kind of milky yellow color. While the stepping isn't nearly as bad as it used to be, it has a strange texture to it, almost like a finer version of detail plastic. When a wash is applied, this texture looks a lot like a very small tire tread. I designed the rear of the bolter (where the grip is) a bit too shallow, so the firing hand is higher up than a traditional bolter. This isn't a big deal, as it still fits just fine, but it does make the front of the bolter look more bulky than it really is. This bolter is 20mm long. The standard bolter is 15mm, so it's 25% longer. here is a comparison: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v396/GunMonkey/Space%20Marines/IMG_20140121_154144_545_zps82aaa11a.jpg I'll see if I can get a full squad of 10 finished by Friday or Saturday.
