KaosRaptor
Hey there kind folks of the B&C! Quick question for you! Can anyone think of a decent reason for traitor Adeptus Astartes to still bear service studs? I managed to acquire a Tactical Squad and Sternguard box between Christmas and my birthday, and I'm quite keen on using some of the bare heads for my Black Legionnaires. Thing is, I can't think of why traitors (especially veterans of the Long War) would still have service studs, but I really don't want to risk ruining the heads by filing them off! Or does it even matter? Thanks for your time! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285475-chaos-service-studs/ Share on other sites
Imperialis_Dominatus
Perhaps they indicate something else, more relevant to those who dwell in the Eye than time served. Perhaps they are for notable kills (Loyalist sergeants, high-ranking officers, Ecclesarchy figures). Perhaps your Chaos Lord deigns to drive such studs into the foreheads of those who prove especially worthwhile in particular missions or campaigns, and to have many is a good way for him to try to gauge loyalty and proficiency. Durus
You could paint them as boils, gifts from Father Nurgle. It should not be hard to remove them though. Just carefully scrape them off with a knife. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285475-chaos-service-studs/#findComment-3566272 Share on other sites
Forté
For how many loyalist commanders they have killed? For decoration? All depends on what god really. Or, just take a sharp knife to them and slice them off. mactire
Vets of the long war ?. Model them as squad leaders/captains who have been around since the heresy had hence the old studs are still in place, maybe rust them up a bit? Honda
Actually, Chaos service studs are more formally known as "horns". :P I do think you should scrape them off though, they seem like a more "Imperial" kind of thing. OTOH, someone who has recently converted sides might have ripped them out to show his new loyalties, so a couple of bleeding/scabbed holes would be an interesting take. KaosRaptor
Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Quite like the ideas of using them as markers for significant kills, or still present from their loyalist days. If I went that way, I would probably try to paint them as rusted, with corrosion leaking into the skin beneath or something. And those saying "cutting them should be simple, just be careful", clearly you've never seen me with a knife! But I may give it a go. Thanks everyone! Hyaenidae
For every veteran loyalist he kills, he tears one of their studs out of their cold corpses and implants them in his own skull? Kinda like ancient tribes that would eat the flesh of their enemies to gain their strengths. Kinda like ancient tribes that Yeah, that's were my train of thought of went. The ultimate grisly trophy. This guy would be a massive sadomasochist. I don't know why, but I'm envisioning an archahic looking combi-bolter and something along the lines of a narthecium/chainfist custom weapon. Something brutal look and equally terrifying. ++Edited for asinine autocorrections.++ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285475-chaos-service-studs/#findComment-3566955 Share on other sites

Dragonlover
There's a line in a Space Wolf novel (either Prospero Burns, Battle for the Fang or Blood of Asaheim, can't remember which one though) about how one of the characters has some studs not for time served, but because he likes the feel of metal in his skull.
