Crobat
Last two days I was reading this forum, and get to know tones of nice stuff. Great forum, tones of super data. Keep on good job guys! Thank you. Now to my topic: I am going to purchase as my first things: Njal Stormcaller (as rune priest, since I really like the model) Space Wolves Battleforce Aegis Defence Line List that I am going to build: HQ - RPriest (staring as quadgun operator and long fang support)Chooser TA Divination saga of beast slayer Aegis defence line with quad gun 10 Grey Hunters - 2x flamer, Wolf standard, Mark of the wulfen 10 Grey Hunters - 2x flamer, Wolf standard, Mark of the wulfen MOUNTED in droppod Wolf scouts 5x Probably going to buy in next purchase, due to budget: Wolf guards Long Fangs I love the idea of space vikings that are blood related with wolves. I really like drop pod. And I love to shoot from distance to support action in midfield. I am aiming towards 1000 point build, as a start. Expanding later. Now to questions: What do you think about this starting list as overal, I want fun semi competitive game, and my enemys wil be mostly Dark Angels, Tyranids and Chaos Space marines. What to put on scouts and how to use them? I am including them mostly beacaouse I am geting them in battleforce box. I have a felling this single troop drop pod unit isn't best thing to do? Should I split in to 2 five man packs one of grey hunter pack? I really like the Idea of having some Wolf guards with storm shields and axes without terminator armor. Seems so Viking. Is this o.k. or should WG with SS come with auto including terminator armor? I saw while reading your posts, some of guys here are including FW flyers. Now I am bit confused, is that for 30k in mind, or those models are now accepted in regular 40k games? Are only models that are accepted, or the whole thing with all the special rules, such are void generators, all those extra fliers, etc. Anything you think I should need to know befor buying/expanding and I forget to ask. infyrana
Hey there, Please take my thoughts with a pinch of salt I would recommend changing the dual flamers to dual plasma. Flamers are great for blobs of weak infantry, but if you run into space marines and light vehicles, the plasma guns would serve you better. If you get a third or fourth set of GH's, you can put on melta guns or flamers. When going for Long Fangs, the best starting point that is most commonly deployed in games are the 6-man Missile Launcher LF's, 5 ML's required though - but you'll see it in most lists as a staple - one of the more efficient options for SW's at taking out vehicles. 1. Seems you have your self started off nicely. Aegis should be a great start versus flyers. No experience with the special char. 3. If you run drop pods, you'll want multiple targets for the enemy to be confused over, just the one gives them something easy for everything to shoot at off the bat. If you go a second, make it three drop pods so two go down on the first turn. 4. Build them up as a 10 man unit, split them later if and when you feel the need through experience. 5. Axes and Storm Shields, very expensive wargear that makes an individual marines' death a very expensive prospect. If you want to put those on something, make it a Terminator. Let's face it, the SW WG:TDA box set is one bad $$$ kit of Terminators that will give you lots of WG options well into the future. You can, however, make use of the Lone Wolf rules to equip that Viking style marine, give him some wolves, and send him off on his little adventure without feeling guilty if he dies. 6. You don't need anything from FW to play games of 40k. They make models that work for 40k as well as 30k, and with plenty of models that have rules to cross into both periods of history / timeline. I would get to grips with the game before you go for any flyers. FW stuff used to be allowed if your opponents let you, this is changing now and there are some threads about it that cover this in far more detail, it's more and more common and you can expect to see more models depending on your gaming area. 7. Read the fluff, Index Astartes, Battle of the Fang novel and any character infos, check the wiki's etc, it's always a joy to read chapter related stuff on the SW's. Fytharin
Welcome to the pack brother. I think you're off to a good start, for a 1000 points you will definitely need the two squads of grey hunters however it might be worth it to have 2xflamers and 2xmeltas just so that way you have something a little heavier hitting like infy was saying. The only reason I don't like plasma guns is their Get Hot rule but a lot of people do choose to take them it's all a matter of preferrence. With 1000 points I'm not sure how often you're going to need the aegis defence line just because you probably won't see many of them in 1000 point games. I would make long fangs your next big buy. Infy is right on the 5 missle launchers and squad leader being the norm and depending what you go up against you could go 3 ml and 2 lascannons if you find you need that extra +1 Strength. I'm a fan of cavalry so instead of wolf guard I would probably suggest buying up a Thunderwolves pack once you're looking towards 1500 or some drop pods because if we have a weakness these days, since our old rhino tactic doesn't work anymore, we're very slow moving. So anything that can get in there quickly and wreak havoc quickly is really good to have which Thunderwolves are masters at. Hope this helps. clanfield
greetings I like your list ...but maybe :)...the defending grey hunters switch there flamers for plasma ,as to the wolf scouts I favour bolters and melta bombs for some rear zone ambush fun the pod will drop at start of game with the scouts coming in in support this is a nice spoiler attack. as to next the long fangs are brilliant but 2 points 1 you don't get the weapons you want in 1 box of devs and two in a smaller game they can be a tab costly (1k pts)so maybe a predator for lower end games I like auto canon /las canon pods for the cheap anti tank angle for wolf guard if your getting njal in termi armour that's not a bad idea but you will want a drop pod or land raider for them and that can be a lot of points if you equip them too heavy in a 1500 pt game hope this helps and good hunting Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/285787-starting-new-army-some-newbie-questions/#findComment-3573093 Share on other sites
Crobat
Thank you all for quick responses :) I see you all in owerall suggesting replacing flamers with meltas/plasmas, so I will do that. As a matter afact I will just go and experiment with both a bit. It is shorter range vs. gets hot :) Also about wolf guards, when I am building them, I will probbably go one terminator armor in C.M.L. to join him to fangs, so he benefits from rune priest bufs. Others I will see :D not decided yet. Seems no terminator armor but stormshield and axex are bit costy. Adding another question: What would it take me to making the rest of WG pack, in to terminator killing team? I was wondering that, since I think I don't really have a sure way to counter them? Can I include terminator WG and Jumpack WG in same pcak of Guards? Hey there, 1. Seems you have your self started off nicely. Aegis should be a great start versus flyers. Read the fluff, Index Astartes, Battle of the Fang novel and any character infos, check the wiki's etc, it's always a joy to read chapter related stuff on the SW's. Actualy I got the idea with that rune priest combo directly from forums here :D and I jsut love idea of him buffing those long fangs for re-rolls in movement, while shooting with quad gun on BS 5 and re-roll against onsters and walkers. This is what I am doing al the time, and more I read it more I love wolf fluff. Just got mi self that wolf audio book, and is waiting for me to get some miniatures on table. Thanks for replie everything helps me alot! Welcome to the pack brother. My play group does fancy quite alot fliers, even I would put gladly one in, if we had codex one. (I don't want alies yet) And I just love aegis defense line model. It makes me happy :D I was thinking exacly the same, Thunderwolves seems a bit point havy for 1000pts to me, but I am definetly going to get some in future, after I have a stable core army that I can field for most games. It helps a lot! Thank you :) greetings ,as to the wolf scouts I favour bolters and melta bombs for some rear zone ambush fun the pod will drop at start of game with the scouts coming in in support this is a nice spoiler attack. as to next the long fangs are brilliant but 2 points 1 you don't get the weapons you want in 1 box of devs and two in a smaller game they can be a tab costly (1k pts)so maybe a predator for lower end games I like auto canon /las canon pods for the cheap anti tank angle for wolf guard if your getting njal in termi armour that's not a bad idea but you will want a drop pod or land raider for them and that can be a lot of points if you equip them too heavy in a 1500 pt game hope this helps and good hunting I don't know how I didn't remember that my self. This is super idea. Seems I will be using scouts than after all. :) Also I read some forums, that they are using scouts as denayal for white scars bike, so bikes can't do scout moves in to 12" range. Tell me are snipers usefull at all? for buying long fangs I was thinking to help my self with iether eBay or yoymart. I would like to stay away from vhiecles atleast for now. But this is what I am going tho bare on my mind. And I am going too take only Njal due to the model, I like how it looks. Other vice it will be just a rune priest :). I am not going to take any spacial charters under 1500. Yep it helps me alot. Thank you! infyrana
For buying heavy weapons, you could actually look to Forge World and their packs of 5x heavy weapons of one type. By the time you've paid for 5 individual ones from the auction or bit shops, and added postage, the price will probably be far more for desired weapons like ML's. Not only that, but the FW ones might give you a more unique look, but do check the required arms as the ML's require the old school hand setup - check the piccies of their dedicated heavy troops.
