Very nice work, Ace! Orange looks much smoother and details are crisper too, I'd say a definite improvement in a short time so kudos for that.

On the mud, not sure if anyone else has suggested this but have you tried getting an old brush, wiping off most of the paint (like when dry-brushing?) and sort of stippling it on, might be a bit less blotchy?

Have you chosen a colour for Champion's power sword? A light/bright blue would probably stand out well on the tabletop?

Thanks, mon ami!

Actually, I'd decided on the 'old brush method' earlier today for my next attempt. biggrin.png

It's got to be worth a try, right?

Also, the Champion's sword is actually done - it's Warplock Bronze, with Chainmail silver edging. The camera seems to hate the colour, though, as even when trying to snap more pics of them before it just seems to come out black. huh.png

I got the arms and stuff for my Red Lords and Infinity Knights today, so they're back on the painting schedule as soon as I get a day to myself again.happy.png

EDIT:

Bad typo, had to be destroyed.

  • 1 month later...

My bits I ordered still aren't here.

This calls for some sweet improvisation! laugh.png

I, Acemund Debonair of the Liber Astartes (Heraldry Dept) will answer the call of E Tenebrae Lux in the name of the Index Astartes Forum, and vow to complete:

a] 1 Dreadnought with Dreadnought Punchy Fist and Multi-Melta valued at 100 points

b] 1 Captain with Artificer Armour, Jump Pack and Twin Lightning Claws valued at 155 points

c] 1 Captain with Artificer Armour, Jump Pack, Teeth of Terra (extra-large Chainsword) and Storm Shield valued at 175 points

For a total of 430 points

on or before August 1st. Success will bring Eternal Glory to the White Hawks and the Circle of Iron; failure will condemn me to bear the Badge of Shame until the year's end and is not an option. tongue.png

So here we go then, with my first ever ETL vow.

There'd be a few more models vowed, except my bits 'n' kits order hasn't turned up yet. pinch.gif

Still, this ought to keep me busy until they do get here!

Without further ado, here's the initial progress shots to qualify my stuff for the ETL.

Captain Anaximander of the 7th Company, pictured here In many pieces.

Captain Rollins of the 1st Company, also pictured here after an explosion.

And Venerable Brother McStompicus, who is the only one of the trio with no actual serious backstory / character.

Also pictured - the detail brush that's about to do all the work and my brand new white paint.

All I need now is Codex-approved motivational music:

tongue.png

And now it's time to go paint these guys! Wish me luck!

Even though you're not doing Chaos. Good luck with your vow. Use this to try and push yourself and your skills. I know I will be thumbsup.gif

Many thanks, and best of luck to you as well, even though you are doing Chaos.tongue.png

Ha, just so long as we don't let those dastardly Dark Angels win again - we'll never hear the end of it if they do! laugh.png

Punchy fist for the win! Good luck smile.png

*Brother McStompicus salutes Squeaky with his Dreadnought Punchy Fist*

I'm not going to lie, I couldn't remember the actual name of the weapon at the time.laugh.png

Extension od the Chainsword getsthumbsup.gif thumbsup.gif .

Cheers! It's a bit rough still up to now - there's a crack in one side that's very visible, even with a nice smooth layer of blue over it, but the way the model will be posed should mean it's almost invisible.

If all else fails, I have about a dozen spare chainswords left so I can try again.

I'll model the Razor of Talhon (Teeth of Terra) if it takes me all month!

Taking a brief break from painting to remember I have to eat today. So far McStompicus is now a gleaming white in most places that he's not silver, and I've made about a dozen mistakes on the few bits I've painted on Cpt. Rollins. Progress!

EDIT:

Since I now have a white spray, I could have just sprayed old McStompicus white, but...

That'd be taking the easy way out.

And in this challenge there is no easy way out. teehee.gif

You know Ace, I love your sense of humour.  I think you would make a great Australian.  You should move here... Now... :P

Anyway, I love the Captains, although at the moment they look more veterany but I am sure with painting they will look boss.  A recommendation to hide the seam in the chainsword is (if you can get it) really thin plasticard, or even just plastic.  If you have any of the plastic blister packs that character or finecast models come in just cut it to the rough size, glue it on, probably with poly cement so it strengthens the bond, then trim and file to shape.  Haven't tried it personally but it should work.  Either that or just use greenstuff.

Anyway, keep up the momentum Brother, FOR LIBER!

Slow progress today.

Pics tomorrow, after I've made some proper progress!

Funny you should say about plasticard, my nephew discovered an old sheet of it upstairs yesterday.teehee.gif

Those lightning claws pictured above? Yeah, they aren't the same anymore. They're now more like Power Katars. devil.gif

That's one thing to cross off my bucket list!

The big chainsword fell apart overnight, so I'm going to glue it again before I go to bed and line it up properly this time. sweat.gif

As for the move to Australia:

Aye!
You must as we have meat pies and XXXX!!!

I'm a Straight Edge Vegetarian.

No meat and/or beer for me, brother! sweat.gif

Australia looks like an amazing place to live, but as an Englishman I'm not suited to countries with more than one dry and warm day in a year! tongue.png

Then I'll eat the meat and drink the beer! And you can hang with the brotherin law XxX for life ;)

I however have no issue with it!

Brother in law has straight edge tattooed over his collar bone a full Simpsons sleeve a peacock on his head and an assortment of other little pieces on his gut legs feet neck.

I think you should move down even more now

Progress Report - I have Begun a Thing!

To sum up:

I

HAVE

POWER KATARS

Slight explanation - I like the lightning claws in the Vanguard box just fine, but you know how sometimes you just get an idea and your brain won't let you rest until it is done?

This was one of those ideas.laugh.png

gallery_46204_9220_516026.jpg

My nephew cut these out for me because my ability to cut anything like a straight line is legendarily bad.sweat.gif

It was a lot of messing to get them attached, but SO worth it.

Captain Anaximander, WIP.

You can tell it's WIP because his arms are on the wrong sides. tongue.png

gallery_46204_9220_195107.jpg

Captain Rollins, WIP.

His arms are the right way around, but he's still got a long way to go!

gallery_46204_9220_345238.jpg

Ancient Brother McStompicus, WIP.

As you can see, he's not exactly neatly painted, and there's not a lot of what you'd call detail on there yet.

Next step is to fix all the blasted errors (in other words the long part of painting models sweat.gif ) and then it's time for the washes and general cleaning up.

Oh, and the bases. Can't forget the bases!

I bet Tasmania has more than one-week-long summers, SP.

Nothing like good old England! tongue.png

Just a quick update as I'm on my way out the house right now:

gallery_46204_9220_231585.jpg

They're not quite finished, but here's an idea of what to expect more of in the next few days. biggrin.png

There's a really, really dumb mistake I made though, which I'll explain later. wallbash.gif

Actually, the mistake was the shoulderpads.

The two I painted up from the Sternguard box don't actually fit with the jump packs on. pinch.gif

So while these guys are pretty close, they're not finished yet. sweat.gif

McStompicus needs another coat of purple too, there's some mistakes on some fiddly bits.

Madwolf: Speed and skill are definitely not the same thing! The longer you take the better quality you'll turn out - I just get stuff done fast because I'm impatient! tongue.png

SP: Tasmania could be part of England with weather like that, except for the snow. laugh.png

Reyner: I didn't mean the deliberate mistake! tongue.png The white's easy - it's Ceramite White, then Agrax Earthshade, then Ceramite White again over the bits I don't want to look brown.

Looking at Rollins again, he needs another coat of white on his chainsword arm - bits of that are covered in wash still!

Deathspecter: I see what you did there! Cheers, mon ami. One of the problems of painting pre-assembly is not knowing 100% how the finished model will look (or if their shoulder pads will fit) so it was pretty gratifying to stick them together and finally see how it all worked out.

The biggest issue, for me, is the chainsword. The join between the two bits is really, really visible, no matter what tricks I try, and it's bugging me.

I could throw a couple of shoulderpads on these guys and call them done, but...

That'd be taking the easy way out.

And in this thread...

There's no easy way out. cool.png
