I am in the final stages of putting together a campaign now that i based of the background of my last battle report. It was gonna feature orks IG and demons against the forces of the imperium. Hopefully ill get to actually play in it.

has anyone out there participated in a campaign before and if so what was the thing that made it or broke it for your dark angels?

I can't say that I've played in one, although when I was younger my friends and I used to plan them. Not making them too complex was an important aspect, as the campaign map can become more of a game than the battles themselves if you're not careful (although that may not be a bad thing, of course, if that's what you want).

For the Dark Angels specifically, I would say that the key thing is to ensure that you are comfortable that the campaign reflects the way you think they would behave based on your interpretation of their character.

But perhaps that's not what you mean?

well i was actually looking for more anecdotes but i appreciate it all the same. For me the world map is what makes it an interesting campaign. Otherwise your just doing a narrative thing. which is cool but less visiual.

For those interested Im gonna keep this going. i guess unless i get some games as dark angels it will get moved, but whatever. Its going to be tough as the GM we shall see. Here's the background behind the campaign.

In the apocryphal days before the emperor’s great crusade the system of Umbral was a quiet, feudal society, dealing with occasional squabbles over goats and land but slow in its progress of technological advancement. Two noble houses eventually rose to great esteem House Phobos north of the river Lethe and House Mellaj south of it. These rivals tried to gain say and outdo each other in all things, and commited great atrocities upon each other in the name of righteousness, but could never muster the power needed to destroy the other.

When the Emperor's great crusade came to the planet the emperor forsaw the great wealth of the planet in its material bounty of Etherium and Promethium. Etherium being the material used to power warp drive of great imperium vessels had been scarce in its quantity, delaying the expansion of the crusade. Being a psychic conduit material it is often noted that deposits of Etherium have frequently been found to be the haunts of demons and their kindred. Promethium, of course has long been known to be the materiel of choice for munitions and forge worlds. Finding such a large supply unguarded the emperor began to engage the people of the world. In his search for allies on the planet he was alerted to the powerful nobles of House Phobos and House Mellaj. his meetings with left a bad taste in his mouth for he could see that both wished only to gain sole power over the world. Instead, the emperor turned to a third weaker house House Terrin to be responsible for the mining operations of the precious resources.

Unshackled from the bitter rivalry of the ancient foes, which had so long held them in thrall, the people of Umbral began to benefit tremendously from their new found resources. Wealth began to move into the planet and the progress of technology and trade became possible with the new formed Imperium of Man.
Yet ever jealousy stirs in the hearts of men, for the Barons of Phobos and Mellaj, had lost their prestige and power and such a slight by the supposed, “Emperor of Man,” was too much for them even in their guilded palaces atop their hives. Although they had benefitted tremendously from the newfound trade agreements the ancient grudge was replaced by a new hatred of the leader of the imperium and his cronies among the upstarts. Old hatreds were placed aside to find ways to topple the Governer of the newly minted Hive of Terringrad.

Using their influence with the lackies of the administratum, the Barons of Phobos and Mellaj, began a secret defense project, undertaken as they would later recount “for the good of Umbral.”
The Stylos interplanetary Laser defense system: a project with two main components. Mounted on Phobos Hive the Stylos laser, itself capable of defending the planet from intergalatic threats and capital starships, would be employed only to defend Umbral in its utmost need.
Upon Mellaj Hivewas mounted the Hercanthrex v7 targeting array, with its ability to coordinate laser strikes against any area of space within 0.5 parsecs of the planet. Due in no small part to the mirrored satellite control system installed with great generosity by the Terringrad government. Having grown soporific with their wealth and power on the planet, the lords of terringrad did not realize their folly til it was too late.
At a secret meeting in the halls of their palaces a plan was formed and the technologies of the emperor and the dark age of humanity were put to terrible use. As the planetary defense laser system charged itself for its first test run, the people of Umbral experienced their moment of great hubris. Their crowning technological achievement, became their doom lookin on as the inferno of 23 megakelvins was unleashed on the unsuspecting populace of Terringrad hive. The cloud of the explosion darkened the skies for six months but the true lords of Umbral had restored themselves to their “rightful places.” Oh there was a trial, oh yes, but when the entire government is executed it is the powerful who appoint the courts.

In a strange twist of irony it was this act of treachery with so many lives lost and the psychic clarion call of so many deaths that came to Warboss Legbreaka as he slept. Consulting his weirdboys, he described his vision to the assembled ork tribes, waxing poeticaly about “smashin dem umies to bits” and “tink of all da stuff we can krump wit a shoota like dat!” but his croup de grace went something like, “Oy shut it a listen you buncha gitz! Once we gets dere well carve da face of da orks on da moon! After we strip an scrap dat boomgun, we can blow up da whole planet and use da leftovas as Roks ta blow up more umies, WAAAAAAGGH!” (Noted weirdboy scholars admit it may have just been the waagh! At the end that convinced anyone of anything.)
With their incredible sensor array showing them what their efforts had wrot, namely ork space craft hurtling towards their position, the lords of Phobos and Mellaj instructed their psychic choir to contact the nearest imperial battle groups.
And here we find ourselves, Umbral, a jewel of the imperium hanging in the balance, a forgeworld of great renown, with two madmen as its leaders and the forces of war ready to descend upon it and bring a new season of malcontent…

Heres some current progress on the World map and specific hive tiles. I'd post the pics here but they are jpg format and this site hates that.

Speaking of which has anybody got the host file for the planetary empire card printouts? they seem to have disappeared from the GW website.

I did something like that with my boy. It was really not a campaign, but more of each game getting bigger and bigger. He was DA, I was Tyranids. It started as a discovery and then got bigger with finding a liar, and then finally the big shebang who would control the planet. It was fun.

Might do something like that again. He likes Necrons now, so I would be DA. Might have some bonus points for the winner or have the objectives, like ammo dump. If you controlled it and got a point for it, you get to use it next round of the campaign.
