Imperial Fists 30k WIP LXXXVII Company 17/04/14 update

Hi all, welcome to my Imperial Fists 30k WIP. My work has taken me away from home for a while. So I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to take my time over a project, instead of racing to get am army finished for a tournament, or just to bring a fully painted army along to the club. As I hate using unfinished models, but when I buy something I tend to rush to get it painted so I can use it. I have chosen to do the Imperial fists as I have had a liking for the paint scheme for a while and wanted something to challenge me. Comments, constructive critic and new ideas are all welcome. Thank you for taking your time to have a look. Without further ado here is my first test model.

I am happy how he turned out. but i think some areas could be better, weathering comes to mind. But this was the first time i have tired to weather a model, so i am sure i will get better at it.

Thanks for the comments, with yellow I find that every army I paint that has yellow in it I learn all the time and I still have only scraped the surface.

As I am taking my time with this project i thought it would be nice to add some back-story to the army. Arfter reading Bernard Cornwell's Warrior Chronicles I decided to use Anglo-Saxon Names, They just feel right.

First One to be named is my Contemptor Ancient Wiohthere.

Wiohthere won many laurels during the early years of the great crusade. he was one of the few battle brothers still being of Terran Decent when Nobel Dorn rejoined the legion. Finally Wiohthere fell during the purging of the Ork hord on Necromunda, He fell gallantly bringing down an Ork Squigoth by planting a melta bomb on its back legs. This allowed his battle brothers to finish the beast. unfortunately while trying to get clear he was caught in the cross fire from a pack of looters. His battle brothers cleared the area and recovered his body to be interned in his contemptor.

Just got final stage highlights to do then on to weathering.

I am looking for some feedback. Early last year I entered a tournament with my Steel Legion/ Mordian Iron Guard Army, For this tournament I created a set of orders for my army background, paying homage to some of the most famous modern leaders of all time.

I was wandering if it would make sense for me to create something smiler for my fists.

an example is as follows.

 Special Order Of The Day

By COMMISSAR GENERAL SEBASTIAN YARRICK

  K.T. C.C.B.C.C.V.O K.C.I.E

Commander-in-Chief,

Imperial Armies Armageddon

To
ALL RANKS OF THE 4TH STEEL LEGION ARMY

Three weeks ago to-day the enemy began his terrific attacks against us on a fifty-mile front. His objects are to separate us from the forces along Hemlock Ricer, to cross the river Styx and destroy the 4th Steel Legion Army.

In spite of throwing already throwing gargantuan forces into the battle and enduring the most reckless sacrifice of life, he has as yet made little progress towards his goals.

We owe this to the determined fighting and self-sacrifice of our troops.  Words fail me to express the admiration which I feel for the splendid resistance offered by all ranks of Imperial Army, Navy and the Astartes under the most trying circumstances.

Many amongst us now are tired. To those I would say that Victory will belong to the side which holds out the longest. The Mordian IX corps is moving through system rapidly and in great force to our support.

There is no other course open to us but to fight it out. Every position must be held to the last man: there must be no retirement. With our backs to the wall and believing in the justice of our cause each one of us must fight on to the end. The safety of our homes and the Freedom of mankind alike depend upon the conduct of each one of us at this critical moment.

General Headquarters                       Commander-in-Chief,

6.2.M41.912                                                 Imperial Armies Armageddon

This order was based around the famous order called back to the wall by Field-Marshal Sir Douglas Haig during the latter stages of the first world war. I tweaked it a little to fit with the theater and units involved and to give it some of my own. once i had created the orders I weathered them with coffee. These orders helped my army win best themed and best painted at the tournament.

I have added some pictures of the army for anyone who is interested.

Unfortunately you cant see it in this picture, but i sculpted bomber jackets for the flight crew in this vendetta.

loving the Imperial Fist, Its looking real good, The Fist were the first army I got into when I first started. So already not being good at painting, being a starter, then having to paint yellow, I just made it more difficult for myself. That being said I love the tiny yellow terrors, and especially love the chapter tactics they have (can you say bolter Spam). Keep up the good work and add as many TACTICAL SQUADS AS YOU CAN! im not joking about the bolter spam, being able to re roll those 1's pretty much means only missing on 2's, unless you have consecutive 1's then surely tzeentch is against you.

Love the heraldry rick_m..nice touch, also like your painting style..

Great job on the weathering..but if I might make some suggestions, a touch of black stippled round the exhaust vents on the power plants and some red stippled or sponged on the edges of the white helmet stripe to just ramp up the damaged look..

Nice to see more

Oh and polly looks sweet on the valkyrie!

Hi all

Thanks for the feedback. really appreciate it.

@ Telhdrat I have posted a stage by stage of the weathering technique i used bellow. it is a blend of a few guides i have found online.

@ Chaplin Mortis Thanks for the suggestions I forgot about those vents (silly me) and i was in two minds about the helmet but i decided to follow your advice and went for it. I sponged red, added a bit of exposed metal as well.

And here is the finished Ancient Wiohthere. if you guys see anything i missed or could add, please let me know.

My Weathering Guide

Stage 1:

Sponge Black around the areas you want to weather on the main color.

http://i502.photobucket.com/albums/e425/richard_mills4/IMG_0147_zpse45a131e.jpg

Stage 2:

Paint Dark metal (leadbelcher) over these areas leaving some black visible.

Sponge same color on the black Armour as well

http://i502.photobucket.com/albums/e425/richard_mills4/IMG_0148_zps656b4838.jpg

Stage 3

Highlight both areas Mithral Silver

http://i502.photobucket.com/albums/e425/richard_mills4/IMG_0149_zpsa5457c32.jpg

Stage 4

Rust (i use crushed artistic chalk but forge world weathering powders work all the same.) Mix dark orange crushed chalk with water to make a wash and flow it around the rivets and battle damage, taking care not to cover the whole battle damage.

http://i502.photobucket.com/albums/e425/richard_mills4/IMG_0150_zpsdd7563f5.jpg

Stage 5

Thin null oil wash (50/50 water) over the whole battle damage areas as well as a bit of the armour plate this will add effect and set the chalk.

http://i502.photobucket.com/albums/e425/richard_mills4/IMG_0151_zps933e181d.jpg

Stage 6

Blood, I used Tamiya Clear Red To add blood where i wanted

http://i502.photobucket.com/albums/e425/richard_mills4/IMG_0153_zps1579bfb8.jpg

The weathering around the legs was just Dark Earth forge world weathering powders set with white spirit (dark brown chalk wold have worked as well)

Same process for the vents but this was crushed black chalk.

Hope this is helpfull.

Looks great with the weapons on, love the MM, makes a difference over seeing so many las and kheres options.

I'd say it only misses a little colour shade or silver chipping on the black plates on the arms between weapons and shoulders to blend in with the weathering. Same goes on the blackened exhaust vents on the back - but that is a personal observation and others opinions will vary of course smile.png

Edit: since you posted your tutorial post, I can see a bit more chipping on the arm sections !

Looks like I did not prime brother Haemgisl. he was primed white just did not cover the bolter as that is going to be black. (cant get hold spray paint out here at the moment)
