Imperial Fists 2k

Hey everyone,

Been pursuing the idea of a Pride of the Legion based list for the Imperial FIsts. My fluff is that they're Terrans, and were part of the clearing of the Jovian moons from pirates and xenos. After 200 years of war, they're basically an all infantry force, with very little in the way of armour and heavy support. They specialise in boarding assaults and urban warfare. So, here's what I've come up with so far:

HQ

  • Praetor - Artificer Armour, Iron Halo, Bolt Pistol, Meltabombs, Paragon Blade,

Rite of War: Pride of the Legion (155)

  • Legion Champion - Artificer Armour, Master-crafted Power Axe, Bolt Pistol, Meltabombs, Refractor Field (125)

ELITES

  • Apothecarion Detachment x3 - Augury Scanners (150)

One each for the Veterans, Tactical and Breachers.

  • Rapier Battery x3 - Laser Destroyer Arrays (165)
  • Contemptor Mortis - 2x Twin-linked Lascannons (185)

My only real AA, which is a bit of an issue.

TROOPS

  • Legion Tactical Squad x20 - Sgt. with Artificer Armour and Power Weapon, Extra CCW, Vexilla (325)

Praetor goes here to give them some extra punch.

  • Legion Breacher Squad x15 - Sgt. with Artificer Armour and Power Weapon, 3x Meltaguns, Vexilla (360)

Legion Champion goes here to likewise increase their killing potential. Meltaguns are for emergency armour destruction. I intend these guys and the Tactical Squad to advance into the enemies deployment zone and seize objectives.

  • Legion Veteran Tactical Squad x10 - Sgt. with Artificer Armour and Power Weapon, Vexilla, 2x Heavy Bolters, Snipers (270)

Mid-field objective holders, along with the Terminators.

  • Terminator Squad x5 - Reaper Autocannon, Power Weapons, 1x Chainfist, Grenade Harness, 4x Combi-weapons, Cataphractii (238)

Also to advance to the midfield and hold an objective, and provide fire support with the autocannon. Plasma or melta for the combi-weapons, depending on who I am playing.

TOTAL: 1973

Leaves me 27 points, which I don't really know what to do with. Could maybe go Artificer Armour on the Apothecaries to keep them alive. Please keep in mind this is meant to be a fluffy force, though I will expand it to include armour eventually. I want them to be based around a small company that is fighting on Terra in the most rugged terrain surrounding the palace, where their close quarters battle experience comes in handy.

Thanks for looking and I welcome everyones suggestions!

No comments? I've also tried an Orbital Assault list, but it seems very light on bodies. Opinions welcome:

HQ

  • Praetor - AA, Paragon Blade, Iron Halo, Meltabombs, Combi-melta (165)

Goes with the melta Support Squad.

  • Librarian - AA, Force Weapon, Bolt Pistol, Meltabombs, Combi-weapon, Refractor Field, Mastery Level 2 - Divination (150)

Goes with the plasma Support Squad.

ELITES

  • Apothecarion Detachment x2 - Augury Scanners (100)

One each for the Support Squads.

  • Contemptor Mortis - 2x Kheres Assault Cannons (180)
  • Dreadclaw Drop Pod (85)

Pods in to the midfield with one of the Tactical Squads.

  • Contemptor Mortis - 2x Twin-linked Lascannons (185)

Pods in at the home objective for long range anti-armour or anti-air.

TROOPS

  • Legion Tactical Squad x10 - Extra CCW, Artificer Armour, Power Weapon, Legion Vexilla, Meltabomb (205)
  • Drop Pod (35)
  • Legion Tactical Squad x10 - Extra CCW, Artificer Armour, Power Weapon, Legion Vexilla, Meltabomb (205)
  • Drop Pod (35)

One of these squads will drop backfield to camp the home objective, the other will hopefully deploy in the midfield to seize any objectives there.

  • Legion Support Squad x8 - 7x Meltaguns (250)
  • Drop Pod (35)

One Apothecary and the Praetor go in here. Fairly obvious what these guys want to do...

  • Legion Support Squad x8 - 7x Plasma Guns (250)
  • Drop Pod (35)

One Apothecary and the Librarian go in here. Twin-linked from the Presience power should make for a potent alpha strike. And if I roll the Foreboding power, I can put them near an objective and they can fire overwatch at full BS!

Total: 2000

I've never played a Drop Pod alpha strike list before, but this does sound like fun. I just worry that there isn't enough bodies on the field, and it would probably be better served doing this with Codex: Space Marines. Would have liked to have included either some Rapiers (particularly the Laser Destroyer Array or the Graviton Cannon version) or another Support Squad with Volkite Calivers, but the points just vanished insanely fast. I think with the Contemptors it either has to be two, or even three, or none. As the only AV value besides the Drop Pods, they will get taken down fast.

Thanks for reading!

Wow, I am very surprised no one has yet to comment on your lists :)

So I thought to spice it up, I would ask some questions to see what you think (I'm still toying with my list and have had lots of helpful advice from other forumites, so I am just provocing ideas, nothing more!).

With your first list, the PotL list, I wondered why you would use it considering the Limitation versus the low number of Vet/Term units you have.  If you were going all Vet and Termi units, I'd not even mention it, but with only two units for your opponent to destroy to gain a secondary objective, I didn't think it was too optimal.

Have you thought about upping your Breacher squad to 20 man to make it more point efficient and give better staying power?  In addition, with armoured ceramite in 30k, is it worth having the Meltaguns over the cheaper Volkites or Flamers etc ?  On that very note - don't forget to add some meltabombs on your sergeants, real cheap and might get you out of a fix.  Lastly, have you thought about switching about the troops to make room for two double rapier's units (4x rapiers in 2 groups of 2).  Split them up on your deployment for better coverage etc, and help cover the loss of the meltaguns a bit.

Yeh, I've basically given up on the first roster, and am either considering going the second one, or another which I worked up a few days ago:

HQ
Praetor - Cataphractii Armour, Combi-weapon, Paragon Blade, Grenade Harness (172)
Pride of the Legion

ELITES

Rapier Battery x3 - Laser Destroyer Array (165)

Contemptor Mortis - 2x Twin-linked Lascannons (185)

Contemptor Mortis - 2x Kheres Assault Cannons, Havoc Launcher (195)

Apothecarion Detachment x3 - Augury Scanners (150)
One each for the Veteran Squads and the Support Squad that is holding the fort.

TROOPS

Legion Terminator Squad x10 - 2x Reaper Autocannons, Grenade Harness, 2x Chainfists, Cataphractii Armour (385)
Praetor goes here. These guys will advance forward, hopefully into
the enemy deployment zone to seize an objective. If not, they should be
able to dominate the midfield.

Legion Veteran Tactical Squad x10 - Heavy Bolters x2, Artificer Armour
and Power Weapon on the Sgt., Legion Vexilla, Snipers (270)
Midfield objective holders. One Apothecary here.

Legion Veteran Tactical Squad x10 - Missile Launchers x2, Artificer
Armour and Power Weapon on the Sgt., Legion Vexilla, Tank Hunters (280)
Midfield objective holders. One Apothecary here. Also anti light armour.

Legion Support Squad x10 - Volkite Calivers (220)
I've heard good things about these guys. Kind of like beefed up Fire
Warriors with the 30" range, they should be able to camp the home
objective.

TOTAL: 1997

40+ bodies, including 10x Terminators, as well as some decent ranged firepower. The only thing I worry about is that Vets are hugely expensive, and still just Marines on foot. I would have loved to fit a Libby into one or both units to provide the 4++ invul. As it is, I will have to settle for the Apothecaries. Thoughts?

A few thoughts on your Orbital Assault list.

1) You can use a Dreadnaught Drop Pod instead of Dreadclaw - 20 pts cheaper and better.

2) Your Melta Support with Praetor totals 500 pts. Plasma Support with Librarian - 535 pts - that's like... Two Fellblades. Or 4 Land Raiders. I really don't see how these two quads could be worth the points spent. Even considering the squad by itself, without Apothecaries and Praetor/Librarian, it's still 285 points. For the same price you could get a 7-man Cataphracti squad loaded on combi-melta or plasma, with power weapons, a few fists, deepstriking with stock 4++ and still scoring.

3) A Librarian with Prescience is a nice addition, but a Master of Signal does a similar job for less and he's got that nice Orbital Bombardment rule.

4) A way to bring Graviton weapons in an Orbital Assault list would be to get the new Graviton Guns pack from FW and stick them on a few Speeders.

5) I'd say contrary to what most people claim, regular Dreads have their place in a drop-podding list. Sure their not as durable as Contemptors, but points-wise are much cheaper, especially when you can put them in regular Pods instead of Dreadclaw/Dreadnaught Pod.

6) A Krakstorm Pod would fit in the list nicely.

I think I'm going to shelve the idea of a Drop Pod list unfortunately. Just can't seem to make it work. It's a shame the Support Squads are so horribly overpriced, I'd love to have a podding army full of them and regular Tacticals.

I'm still very keen on the list in post #4. Any thoughts on it?

I think you have all of your bases covered with your list in post #4.  Anything I suggested would probably just be changes based on personal preference.  Anti-armor through your elites, anti-air as well, the Kheres CM also provides some anti-infantry dakka.  4 scoring units, strong melee (assuming you're giving all those guys poweraxes if they don't have fists?), a lot of dakka from the support squad (volkite support is one of the few viable 10-man builds for them, as far as I am concerned).  Your vehicles both have 5+ invuls, so despite being few in number they should stand up to anti-armor weapons for a couple turns.  Your Praetor is appropriately used and outfitted.  My main concern would be mobility, but most HH infantry is going to be footsloggers anyway.

Yep, power axes all the way on the Terminators. I think mobility is always going to be an issue in HH lists anyway, except for specific RoW lists. The vast majority of lists I have seen are footsloggers.

Thanks for the comments. I'll proxy it soon and see how I go! I have a game coming up soon against 40k Blood Angels and Nids. The BA I'm not overly concerned about, but the new Nids have some nasty tricks, and I know for a fact that the Nid player picked up a few Crone/Harpy kits with the new dex!

Four Elite-Slots? Mortis Contemptors are a single choice, unlike the normal Contemptor.

HH lists are permitted 4 elites and 3 HQ slots by the Age of Darkness Force Org for battles of 1750 to 3500 points.  For 1749 and less, you use the standard 6th ed force org.  See page 162 of Massacre for more info.
