Collective Consciousness
If I had to use MMs I would put them in a command squad in a repressor, never tried it though. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that the new rules let any weapons fire from the repressor. The melt as on my dominions and my inmos is enough for me. There is no restriction on what weapons may be fired but they are not going to be relentless so most likely will be snapshots. You can move and than stop moving to shoot. Fibonacci
So ... wait a turn of not shooting to get a turn of normal shooting? To get the extra die roll for penetration, multi-meltas need to be within 12" and meltaguns need to be within 6". Since the meltaguns can move 6" and still fire at full BS, they can also start at 12" away and get the extra dice for pens. The meltaguns can also move 6", disembark 6" and get double penetration dice at 6" for a total threat range of 18" for double pen. Even if the multimeltas have twice the range, their inability t move and shoot means that when embarked, metlaguns have a better threat range. [edit] Just to be clear, this only works while embarked in transports. If you have a nice bit of cover or fortification near mid-table, the multameltas are obviously a better option. march10k
On the other hand, a small forward BSS will not survive first contact with the enemy to have a second turn of faith. That is precisely why you don't take small units of battle sisters! The idea of units of twenty is nice because it maximizes the value you get out of the act, especially if you take a simalcrum...two turns of preferred enemy bolter dakka with those huge squads is nasty. Personally, I spam squads of ten in rhino with laud hailer, melta, heavy flamer, and simalcrum. Do such upgrades across several units not eat into your Fast/Heavy/HQ options? march10k
"Spam" equals four...but only because I have started substituting two rhinoloads of repentia for the other two. I don't use dominions, but I do field a challenge monkey canoness, a sacred banner, and three exorcists, so by and large, I'd have to say that 200 points per scoring unit does not "eat into" my HQ, (FA), and HS. I think meltaspam is a relic of 5th edition. While I understand that in the absence of plasma, melta is our only high-S, low-AP infantry weapon, that's far less important in 6th, now it's a numbers game where high body count and high volumes of fire are the new hotness. I violate that with my deathwing and still win, but it's harder than ever before. I think AS would be best served to take ruthless advantage of getting power armor and BS4 boltguns for 2/3 the price of a marine in squad sizes 100% higher, with up to two rounds of preferred enemy. 120 battle sisters in a single FOC (with 108 boltguns, and 12 meltaguns) would be nigh-unstoppable, and certainly harder to counter than the conventional wisdom of AV11 spam. Besides, the powergamers in my meta don't bat an eyelash at massed melta, but they whine long and hard over my exorcists...probably because the emphasis on (short ranged) infantry dakka means that meltaspam is a one shot suicide mission, while long-ranged antitank shooting (missiles and lascannons) not only get to shoot (turn after turn) from outside of rifle range, the hull points rule lets them grind vehicles to dust without relying on 2D6 AP. The exorcist missile is so nasty because it combines high volume of fire (HPing tanks to death) with AP1 (meaning that a pen is 3x as likely to be catastrophic). I kind of see battle sisters as a huge strength of the AS, yet I see people treating them like fire warriors (taking the minimum possible) to spam dominions and immolators (the crisis suits of SoB?). I guess it works for some people, but then my tau army (in 5th, haven't played tau in 6th) had exactly seven crisis suits (only two of them fireknife, and none deathrain), as opposed to the usual 10-15, and I had success in spite of the conventional wisdom of "maximize fk/dr suits and then fill up on rail guns and pirhana, while minimizing troops, and no more than six FW!" Naminé
Thanks March, I can see how it works... It seems we have very different meta's though :) Even with the number of meltas I take in sisters (and space marines for that matter), it is still sometimes not enough to kill all the prime targets I want! My local is pretty vehicle heavy lol. march10k
Yeah, my meta seems to emphasize one of two approaches, or both in the same list, if it can be managed...either quantity over quality, which of course plays to our relatively cheap BS4 power-armored boltguns, or 1-3 units of unkillableness, like dual wraithknights. I've found that 3 exorcists and a scattering of incindental melta works well enough against the single-model-deathstars without crippling my ability to handle the hordes. My meta surprises me, really. The lack of focus on defeating tank spam in my meta makes me want to bring my 5th edition IG parking lot back: 9 chimeras, 4 russes, 2 hellhounds, and 3 sentinels in 1850 points. *Furyou Miko
I can't help it, I just love my Dominions. ^^; But no, I certainly don't think of BSS as being like Fire Warriors. I love me my standard Troops squads. I just normally play smaller games where I have to sacrifice them if I want my Dominion squad! *Furyou Miko
That is a really cool banner. :D I don't have any banners made up. My armies' emblems are a book and a sword, but I have yet to find a combination of the two that looks good on a banner. march10k
Ah...I vaguely recall something that might help. On the cover of the paperback edition of an honor harrington (author is dave weber) novel is a flag along those lines, it's either the flag of Grayson or the flag of the protector of grayson...lemme look it up. /edit/ it's called "flag in exile." open book with crossed (japanese style) swords above it and a planet above that. substitute a fleur de lis for the planet, and you're good!
