Half n' half vehicles.

Closest I've come to half n' half is this:

And yeah, there was a lot of masking tape involved.

EDIT: Forgot to include a picture with the door up (since I didn't carry the scheme over onto the side doors):

@Olisdrean,

I was leaning towards neutral colour, with prominent parts in chapter colours. I think vehicles can look a little OTT when you have half/quartered schems on them.

@ Disruptor,

Masking tape! Gotcha, lol. Hadn't even thought of that. That Rhino looks nice.

So im doing Marines Errant, which IA says look like this. Which isn't too bad.

But im considering something like this, so the tanks don't look too garish....

Its a toughy... Luckily the ME colours aren't quite as out there as the Howling Griffon colours...

You want low tac masking tape (or failing that stick it to your jeans 1st then apply it) otherwise the tape can remove some of the paint when you peel it off..

Get your line neat and straight the spray (assuming airbrush/rattle can) away from the tape.. that way anything iys not quite stuck to due to being a funny shape etc wont end up painted by accident.

I guess my landraider would Kind of count in that aspect? I'll just post a picture and let you decide smile.png

So i pretty much painted the minor panels on the sides. I was tempted for the center piece in the last photo, so around the assault cannon up to where the Armour raises being yellow as well but i decided against that. Good luck in deciding, i always fret over vehicles, this guys been 90 percent done for quite a while now and i don't know how to finish him.. >.<

One thing that does come to mind are Flesh Tearers vehicles. They often have the secondary color of their scheme painted in the pattern of a huge buzzsaw, their Chapter symbol, on their rear end. Here is an example.

Guess with Marines Errant you could do something similiar with either the flames or the star for a similar effect. Flames will look a little like hot rods. Unless that is what you are going for I'd suggest blue tanks with big metallic stars wrapped around their hulls in a similar manner.

Another thing that came to mind. Kind of similar to the neutral color approach, but I like the big Chapter symbol on there. The shooting star in chapter color on the side of the vehicle might look good too.

i did find an "interesting" take on the split scheme for vehicles for the marines errant..

i personally prefer the straight down the middle approach but thats just me.. And for examples of masking used on vehicles..

ive used masking tape on all my dg vehicles to mark out the stripes.. if you're going to do it by hand which colour are you going to do 1st and which 2nd? if the blue is 2nd id consider stippling it on (possibly with a sponge..) the main thing to avoid is making the paint too thin as masking tape isnt water proof afterall and if the paint is too thin itll bleed into the tape and onto the side you dont want it on.

Yeah it'll be the blue second, i paint everything silver first, pretty much.

Apart from things i know won't be metallic (purity seals etc) a dark silver is what most nooks and crannies on Space Marines end up being anyway, so i get it out of the way first. :D

And thanks for the tips, Lorenzen! Ill try not adding water, and i have a sponge so i could use that. I can imagine its hard to keep a really straight line without the masking tape on vehicles...

I think im going to go for straight half n' half btw

An automotive trick is to roll the tape into a tube so theres no hard "step" for the paint to build up next to.

OOOOH! So simple, but would be so effective!

Definitely handy if you're building up a solid colour by hand (like I did with the white stripe on the above Rhino)!

Well i tried it and it worked fine!

I basically put it over the model front to back, and the same on the detached turret. Then i went along painting along the line, and touched up any inbetween bits where the masking tape didn't touch.

I probably did a rough job, but ive got a good feel for it after doing the half and half marines, so the tape was a great guide to keeping it consistent across the whole tank. Cheers guys!

Will have the finished article in my WIP thread soon, i hope.
