Arabel, Deathwing Librarian & mates [upd 21-7]

Had some old metal terminators from 2nd edition lying around and some unused parts from the Deathwing command squad/knights set (I did not build them as knights), and decided to try and convert a librarian. Combination of metal and plastic bits used, filled in with greenstuff and some undefined bits (such as the drum feed on the stormbolter). Decided on a force-axe and stormbolter combo. Pimped the bolter a bit to be able to upgrade it to Foesmiter if I have some spare points. His main purpose is to provide prescience, with the force axe being a deterrent to multi wound gribbly things. http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/r722/Daevyll/ca6a4ff6-a223-4f57-8cff-aa91f34b70a5_zpsde8b1b69.jpg

Looks good, man. Did you say the drum feed is greenstuff? If so, that's some crisp work there. Surprisingly, the simple base really boosts this model. Talk about a simple scheme, but the addition of the dead grass, and the way you blended the dusty/muddy color into the legs is spot on. It's a perfect match and really makes the model look gritty and real.

Which parts are from the 2nd ed. terminator(s)?

Most of the body behind the cowl (which you can't see very well), and the upper part of the legs, plus the power plant exhausts.

It was mostly a case of getting the parts I needed, cutting off the front of the body to make the cowled bit fit, and bulking out the metal part a little since the old metal termis are just a tad smaller than the current ones.

Awesome sauce conversion and crisp painting too. Excellent cracked earth base. The whole gels perfectly and is set off by the blue cowl/robe/tabard.

Right so you've cracked an HQ - now where's the rest of the Deathwing ;)

Cheers

You must tell me how you did your base..

Dark brown undercoat then a layer of crackle paint. Vallejo sells a crackle medium to get this effect, GW has a crackle paint but only one color so its more limited.

Then I used Vallejo weatherings powders ( light and dark dust colors) to make it all extra dry and dusty. The grass tufts are from army painter line I think.

Very nice work!

I do have one suggestion - pick out the arm cables in another color just to break up the bone a bit more. Metallic maybe, that is typically how you see them. Personally, I like to handle them like so - sort of hazard stripe-esque.

Crackle paint! Love it.

Took longer than intended, but the first of his squad is ready for action.

I was keen to avoid the 'christmas tree' look that DW terminators are susceptible to, so I steered away from greens except for the eye lenses and limited the red to the shoulder pad and purity seal.

Used grey stone and brass as color elements, and made the terminator quite dirty and damaged in appearance.

Possibly the best Deathwing terminator ever, even the base reminds me of the plains people home-world story. This guy could so easily be Weasel-Fierce or Lame Bear. The subtlety of the painting brings out the details beautifully in terms of both palette and technique. More please x

Yep indeed. Awesome sauce. A very muted colour palette put to good use. The red and sighting lenses / eye lenses just add the 'sparkle' needed to stop them becoming drab. You have more in the pipeline? If so, keep posting please :)

Awesome stuff. Love the basing and the weathering (and the more 'brown' tone of bone you have, as opposed to the yellowy bone GW uses). Yes, it also made me think of Deathwing too. You should do a couple of the named marines from that story, would look awesome in this scheme.

Thank for the comments all; you've actually triggered me to re-read the original Deathwing story, still an excellent read. I also like how it is implied in the Codex that it is actually a parabel told to new initiates in the Dark Angels now, with hidden meaning. So much better than a straight retconning :)

As for progress, no squad is complete without a heavy weapons guy, and this is mine. His assault cannon arm is actually magenetized, and I also have heavy flamer and plasma cannon arms for him, but those are not fully painted yet.
