It's been awfully quiet in the Iron Hands forum recently, so I've decided to move my Iron Hands illustrations to the Heresy forum instead.

I have been using pictures from the three Forgeworld Horus Heresy books to make new Iron Hands illustrations. Partly because it gives me inspiration to get on with painting my army, and partly because it gives me something to do when it's quiet at work! cool.png

I'll start with a bit of background and then get on with posting my Iron Hands pictures.

I was inspired by Iron Hands Fanatic's fantastic Clan Organisation Chart, and used it as a template to begin putting together my own Iron Hands Order.

My Army is going to be based on Order Triarii (the Third Order) of Clan Burrakis - A Clan of my own invention. The appointed Iron-Captain is Iron-Father Alasdir Nox, and the units in my army are going to be formed from various forces listed below.

So, without further ado:

Urza is the Terran-born Lord of Clan Burrakis. Born in the violent H-Boroughs of Old Albia, he was recruited into the X Legion and during his early career his technical prowess and tactical abilities were noted by his senior officers. He was fast-tracked into the Martian Techmarine program, and shortly after his return to the Legion he ascended the ranks to become the Ironwrought of Techmarine Conclave Alpha. After the Legion was reunited with their Primarch and relocated to Medusa, Urza once again rose through the ranks to become an Iron-Captain, and eventually took control of the Land Crawlers of Clan Burrakis in an event known to the Clansmen as 'The Great Shutdown'. Urza declared himself the Iron Lord of Clan Burrakis, and began the task of restructuring the Clan to better support his Legion's infrastructure.

Burrakis flourished under Urza's control, and became renowned across the planet as a centre of experimental technology and for their ability to restore function to ancient technologies recovered from archaeological digs across Medusa. Their excavation of the crash sites of Telstarax are the most extensive of any clan, and they have ventured further into the Dark-Age Technology-ridden Northern Wastes than anyone other than Ferrus Manus himself.

Burrakis is a relatively small Clan by comparison to the likes of Kaargul or Raukaan, however it has been allowed to thrive due to it's production of high-end technology. Urza himself has a mastery of Volkite and Graviton generators unseen anywhere else outside of Mars itself. His experimental work on compressing Conversion Beamer generators and maximising energy throughputs crucially allowed Legion Predator Tanks to mount them as their main turret weapon. Urza himself has performed countless upgrades and enhancements to his own body, most notably the replacement of his own eyes with a pair of multi-function occular sensors. There is a myth amongst his fellow Clansmen that he sacrificed his eyes in return for knowledge of technology, in a similar fashion to Odynn of Terran folklore, or the Primarch Magnus himself.

The Clan has extremely close ties with the Mechanicum, even more so than usual for the Iron Hands. Their ability to call upon the forces of the Mechanicum is without precedent across the Imperium, and is thought to be at least in part due to trading of 'suspect' (possibly even Xenos) technologies between the Clan and the Mechanicum.

I spent a long time working on this Marine, and I'm very happy with how he has turned out. The torso and pipes were a PITA to put together - SOOOO many layers!! laugh.png

He's based on this guy from the Iron Hands Mk3 Legion Tactical Squad:

I also put together a Conversion Beamer Predator, as there isn't one in the first two books. The Heavy Conversion Beamer itself is pretty rough though.. Unfortunately it was the best quality image of it that I could find on the 'net..

"And then.... The Immortals came.

Their Spartan transport smashed through the traitor fortification, reducing the walls to rubble. The front hatch opened, and the Immortals charged forth in silence, bringing with them the stink of hot motor oil and burning metal. Their eyes glowed like a forge. Not a scrap of flesh was showing. I wondered briefly if they was any trace of humanity left in them at all.

Despite their silence they seemed to seethe with fury.. and yet they fought with cold precision, like robots of the Mechanicum. They smashed traitors to the ground with their shields, and then burned them alive with point-blank shots from their Volkite weapons. Any survivors were decapitated with the edge of their shields.

They took the traitor fortification in under 5 minutes.. The same fortification I had lost over four hundred men trying to take.."

Thanks guys!

I do actually have some minis that I'm working on as well, I'll hopefully get some pitcure of them up in the next week or two when they are finished.

They have Graviton Guns... Lots and lots (24!) Graviton Guns!! cool.png

There are some more illustrations over on my thread in the Iron Hands forum. I'm going to gradually update them and add them here.

Hi everyone!

It's been a long time since I posted anything here, so apologies for the thread necromancy! happy.png

I've been working away at my Clan Burrakis Iron Hands for over three and a half years now. My building/painting pace can officially be classed as glacially slow. laugh.png

I've painted a lot of models now, and recently I got to a stage where my army now stands at over 7000pts.

Here's some photos of my army as it stands currently:

I've still got plenty more to build/paint! Including:

  • Two Questoris Knights, to form an allied Detachment.
  • 3 x Graviton Cannon Rapiers + Teams.
  • Fire Raptor Gunship
  • Typhon Lord of War
  • Falchion Lord of War
  • Ferrus Manus, plus a 5-Man Terminator Honour Guard
  • Various Centurion Consuls (a new Librarian, a Siege-Breaker, and a Master of Signal)

Oh, and the small matter of the mass of infantry I have accumulated from the Burning of Prospero box sets I bought. These guys will be replacing my older Infantry Squads and will incorporate various Forgeworld Iron Hands Upgrade parts:

  • 90 (!!) Mk3 Marines
  • 10 Tartaros Terminators
  • 10 Custodians

It's good to have you back dude, that's a pretty heft army you've built, you've done a great job of mixing in 40k & 30k components

Which Knight House are you gonna go for?

Thanks IHF!!

The only Knight House I know of that was aligned with the Iron Hands during the Heresy was House Col'Khak

However there is no record of their colour scheme or heraldry, so I'm going to go for a House Malinax colour scheme (mainly because it will contrast really nicely with the rest of my army) biggrin.png

Oh nice, Col'Khak works really well too because of their iron over flesh mentality and closeness with the Mechanicum, they'll tie into your army great

Huh, funny you're going with a bone colour considering your basing, my plan for my Iron Hands (which I will start painting soon, I promise :P ) is to have a martian / rust orange basing scheme, and the homebrew Knight House I'm planning to go alongside them has the same colour plating. I think it makes sense to not introduce a new bright colour to the army considering how monotone the IH scheme is, but using the basing colour acts as a nice contrast whilst not disrupting the overall palette.

Looking forward to how you takle Col'Khak thumbsup.gif

Yeah, I'm kind of hoping that the detail on my Knight's bases will distract slightly from the fact that I've got tan coloured Knights on sand coloured bases laugh.png

I've spent countless hours working on these two Knights. They are both Forgeworld - A Questoris Knight Styrix and a Questoris Knight Magaera. However I was able to get enough extra plastic parts on eBay to have 1-2 of each weapon. In an act of absolute madness, I've magnetised both Knights, at the waist, head, arms, shoulder gun and even added a magnetised connecting socket at the top of the Questoris Knight Carapace for the plastic Knight Twin-Autocannons/Missile Pod...

Here's where I am currently with the Knights (note all the weapon arms laid out behind them!):

And here are their bases, which I'm especially happy with:

- Base 1:

- And Base 2, which as far as I'm concerned is the only thing to do with the frankly terrible plastic Contemptor from the Betrayal at Calth box!! laugh.png

Man, they look rad, cool idea turning them into mini dioramas - they are centerpiece minis after all

Maybe one way to help distance the base & armour colours is use of weathering? Oil stains, rust etc could help add a different tone to the plates

Totally get what you mean with the B@C dread, my approach is remodeling it as much as possible including altering the angle of the head, re-working the groin so the legs are in a more natural position, entirely re-sculpting the knee joints & adding as much Iron Hands detailing as possible

I'm planning on making the metal body parts (under the armour) of the Knight's as dark as possible, and I'll definitely be trying weathering etc. I may also paint a couple of armour panels/half panels in Iron Hands colours to show their alignment/honours.

All I could be bothered to do with my B@C Dread was half build it, then lay it down on my work bench and hit it dead centre with a claw hammer laugh.png

That's how I managed to achieve the cracks in it's torso armour!
