Along the way while I worked on the start of my pre-heresy Iron Hands army we got into a short discussion about basing and I freely admit that sometimes I like the custom basing approaches as much as painting the model.  Here's a link to that for reference.  http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/284961-pre-h-iron-hands-for-adepticon-massacre-event/page-3

I've started in on a Knight Titan and thought, along the way, we could further that discussion and then transition into more about the model itself.

So here's the concept  - the left leg has been flexed at the hip & knee to show more forward motion.  As per the base, I used it to place the model into a context (battlefield debris to match my Iron Hands) and to directly infer action.  In this case, I'm attempting to show that the model is advancing, the right foot digging into the terrain and the left foot smashing down through metal plates.  Also, you want the model to interact a bit with the environment and not just stand there.  By digging into the earth and breaking up the metal plates it suggests the massive weight of the model.  Also the paint should show dust extending up onto the feet themselves to draw a closer connection between the model and its setting.  The rest is really just a question of aesthetics.

So here's the placement of the debris bits on the base.

And here's the result after the first sand application.  Since I took this picture I built up the sand around the larger smashed building bits and the right foot.  Again, I want it to look like the weight of the Titan is dredging up the earth and will leave a big footprint when it moves away.  The area I left without sand I'm going to add water effects.  Here's another example from the Castallax model I made for the IH army that used the same approach:

So the Titan's base is now primed and ready for paint.  If I get more done this weekend I'll post another pic of the progress and comment a little about my approach there as well.

Thanks Jeff. I've certainly been paying attention to your WIP thread as I've researched this knight.

Here's the base now mostly painted - note, mostly painted.

I'm 90% decided that I'm going with house Taranis as I already decided to go with one of the Ad Mech group of houses and Taranis has the scheme I'm gravitating towards.

I need to work on custom decals & begin building from the ground up.  More soon.  Cheers, -OMG

Not much to add but this illustrates the contrast of the Knight's colors against the backdrop.

Really loving the different effects you've got going on around the base. Something I'm going to try emulating over a few different pieces.

Think that water effect you've got going would work really well in a water overflow or sluice. How do you do it?

The medium is Woodland Scenics' Water Effects.  From the bottle it has the consistency of a thick white glue.  You can cut it with water but as it comes you can shape it easily with a toothpick. To get the color variations under the water I used Vallejo Smoke over a white primed undercoat.  I created a "blotchy" effect by just varying the amount of paint used randomly.  You overlay the water effect thinly as it takes a long time to dry.  This application took two days before all the white cloudy areas set to clear.  I've played around with inking over the surface to create a deeper 3D effect but in this case it's not necessary.  The way light passes through the medium is enough to generate a good look.

You can go crazy with this stuff to simulate running or flowing water out of a downspout etc.  I've seen things too where you paint more elaborate "under water" scenes with objects that get totally submerged with a great result.

Good luck with it.  Cheers, -OMG

Though not quite done yet - here's some WIP shots of the carapace.

Thats looking great OMG! I have been toying with the idea of water effects for awhile and have used it with some success on my winter rubble bases... I really like the look thus far of the 'weight' settling into the detritus of the battlefield... Im looking forward to seeing what you do with this kit movement wise.

Thanks gents.

I was playing around with the right arm to see if I could get a more extended firing position.  That would balance out the position with the extended left leg.  Might take some real hacking to achieve though.  Not to mention that it messes a bit with the facing of the model which I understand to be a minor problem with Knights on the tabletop.

I've got quite a bit of paint on the legs sans the armor plates so I should be mounting them on the base shortly.  More soon.  Cheers, -OMG

It will have the skull-like face but I'm thinking about breaking off a portion of it - as if the knight took a shot in the face, exposing the underlying face beneath.

We'll see how that turns out.  Cheers, -OMG

I'm still really struggling with the face myself... I hear your pain. Did you notice that Gerantus, the green Freeblade on the GW site, has a very subtle conversion? They took the top of the skull put it on the bottom of the tilting mask. I was actually thinking about doing that when I noticed that his was like that already. Right now I'm working on making a tilting mask actually flip up, but holy cow is it hard... I didn't think it would be this bad.

Small update as I've been working on other models (too many started w/o getting them finished).  Also I was getting to the point where I wanted to make some custom decals before painting other sections of the knight.  At least I've found the time to do that much - so here they are.

They are currently sealing as I type this so I might have more to share here before the weekend is over.

Sometimes it scares me to see how much time passes as I paint models.  Ah well, such is life.  Here's an update.  Maybe it will actually be done before year-end.
