40K Dusk Raiders, no relation

Evening all

Follow the positive response to a query I raised on mixed chapter armies.  I suddenly found myself with a warm and fuzzy feeling towards 40K and the need to work on an army, so I decide to take the plunge.

The basic premises is either a siege or crusade force of Ultramarine successors.  The Dusk Raiders are the first part of this force and are an Ultramarine successor who at some point I will do an IA article for.

In truth my painting and photographic skills are equally craptastic!  I picked up an almost complete set of AOBR PA marines and have added a Sergeant in MKV and a kit bashed plasma gunner as the sergeant and flammer where missing.

First up is my test model Battle Brother Claypool, I wasn't to fussy with him as I was really just trying to find the right colour for bare ceramite, GW have ceramite white and the Dusk Raider in FW's Betrayal is dark grey neither of which looked right to me so I went for a light grey

I wanted something close to the old elf grey but as I was keen to get started I used a mix of skull white, russ grey and a tiny bit of undercoat black, bit darker than I would have liked but still quite pleased with the result and with a bit of tarting up he will be ready to face the Emperor's enemies.

Veteran Sergeant Gudrun

Really please with how he turned out

Specialist Uber arms too come when I find a right arm in my bits box.

Group Shot

Specialist Nathun, BB Maxilla, BB Bure, BB Vibben, BB Godwyn, BB Harlon & BB Bael have been undercoated whilst I search for the right shade of grey.

and Brother Captain ??? who is my favouite even if his head and right arm fell off when I was setting them up.  Still needs a name, the first person to say where I took the inspiration for Squad Gudrun's names from can name him.

Try not to laugh at my ineptitude too much.

C&C welcome.

The Primus part was right, wouldn't say I was a huge fan, more a huge fan of cheesy puns.  The rest of the squad were all borrowed from 1 source.

Might have helped if I listed Squad Gudrun

VS Gudrun

BB Uber

BB Nathun

BB Maxilla

BB Bure

BB Vibben

BB Godwyn

BB Harlon

BB Bael

BB Claypool (Primus)

No but I'm definately thinking that my second squad will use the Fallout series for names.

Anyway finally found my grey of choice going with GW's adminstratum grey.  Battle Brother Claypool has got a new coat of paint and I'm going to start adding details, not sure what colour to use on the chest eagles I like the idea of verdigris or maybe copper or a bronze but not sure how well that will look on weapons.

Minor update no pictures as waiting for paint to dry.

Progess;

7 marines have now been given their base coat and I'm trying to detail my test model company markings are in and had my first go at eye lens.  I also finished off assembling my CSM Sorceror, Lord and Chosen they have been sitting in plastic bags for a while so thought it was time.

Problems;

Not happy with the Dusk raiders colour scheme as the grey looks far to Space Wolf, maybe it will be lighter once it dries.  Will assess it in the morning.

The eyes lens didn't go well and black was probably a poor choice he looked like a racoon so have repainted his helmet.  Will try again tomorrow.

Not happy with the plasma gunners pose looked terrible.  Have kept the parts I like (legs, torso, backback & head) and will see if I can find a better pose might go with slung/holstered gun and pistol/CCW in use.

Battle Brother Claypool is about as complete as my skills will allow, just need to base him properly but will leave that until the full squad is ready.

Plasma guy didn't go as planned, however I liked him so much that I have promoted him to the Sergeant of Squad Megaton but still need a special weapons guy for Squad Gudrun.

Photos of some more of my work, first is Brother Sergeant Megaton

Not sure which Chapter is going to make up my second tactical squad might go with Sons of Orar, if anyone has any preference to an Ultramarine successor chapter feel free to let me know.

Slighty off topic as not actually connected to my Dusk Raiders but here are some Chosen Chaos Space Marines, renegades from the Imperial Fists bloodline unknown chapter with a hardline on mutation which explains why one guy has 2 bionic arms unfortunately, I have misplaced one of them so will need some more DA veterans to convert.

Just a few notes for my eventual IA (probably the wrong place but I want to keep everything together and I'm bound to lose my note book).

1st Tactical squad named from Eisenhorn Books

2nd Tactical squad will be named from Fallout Series

3rd Co. Captain will be called Aubrey (and yes the apothecary will be Maturin)

Scout Squad will be named Squad Borleias - all members will be named for planets from the Star Wars universe.

Dusk Raiders home world will be mountainous with larger tracts of tundra/dust.  They have UM geneseed.

Myth - Planet made compliant by Roboute Guilliman who is said to have noted inhabitants suitablity for marine canditaure but didn't act on it due to distance from ultramar (it wasn't Guilliman might not even have been a primarch and the DR's only got UM geneseed by chance).

There are 2 80 ft tall statues of space marines who guard the beginning of the path to the place of testing.

DR revere RB and Emperor but don't worship either of them.

DR named after giant wyrms that inhabit planet they take all day for body tempreture to heat up then hunt at dusk, largest wyrm is around size of Mawloc but these are quite rare on average grow to between 8ft - 14ft, rumoured that grew much larger in past and the biggest one was killed by RB (wrong again).  Also possible that wyrms are connected to nids.  Natives actively hunt the wyrms but it is considered cowardly to do so during the day when they are not active and a true warrior attacks the lairs at dusk.

Monastry keep is on small satelite/moon.  Aspirants have to face the path to place of testing which is on top of the highest mountain unarmed and with no provisions for joureny. rumoured that no aspirant who has survived the mountain has ever failed to join chapter and if one does the chapter will fall.

General Attriton based infantry combat specialists, however are not adverse to adapting to changing needs some companies are specialised in toher types of warfare.

3rd co. use hit & run and flyer based combat after serving alonside Raven Guard.

Founding unknown first know activites was during M37 when DR stopped Waargh Goodledox (needs a better name I know) Chapter Master killed Ork Warlord but died of his wounds.

Current Captain of 3rd Co. was Chapter Champion before promotion to head 3rd Co. (was this reward or punishment?)

Codex adherant but not like some chapters as they are willing to adapt/innovate to meet changing circumstances.

Majority of flyers are with 3rd co.

chapter symbol snake/wyrm like thingy.

Veterans and Scouts don't usually deploy en masse usual for squads to be assigned to crusade/battle co.  Tactical, Assault & Devastator companys usual patrol sectors near to homeworld dealign with local threats and pirates/raiders. battle co. are more wide sperad seeking out imperiums foes.

Battles:

Siege of something administratum depot/forge world elements of 3rd co. resuppling when chaos fleet/space hulg shows up and invade 3rd co. captain is ranking astarte and given control of forces by Inquisitor Tharen (ordo xenos) who is on planet whith Death Watch Kill Team searching for xenos tech/secrets which have also drawn chaos.  Chaos force mostly traitor guard, cultist, lost & damned few daemosn or traitor marines/renegades.

Not much happening as I have ricked my neck and the pain is far too distracting.  I partially asembled 3 new marines 1 Mk v & 2 Mk VI just waiting for an order to arrive so I give them arms and pads.  1 of the Mk Vi marines will be the special weapons guy for Squad Gudrun and the other 2 will probably end up as special & heavy weapons guys for Sqaud Megaton.  Then got to track down some more cheap boletr marines for my tactical squad and work out what is next.

Rough idea for current Chapter Master born on one of the chapters vessels and came to chapters notice when ship was boarded by Dark Eldar and inducted in to chapter was going to name him voidborn but have decided to use names of British naval officers (real & fiction) from Napoleonic wars for Chapter officers.

I decided that the MkV & MkVI guys would be part of the honour guard for my Captain I already had the parts for the apothecary and have added a kneeling down guy so just got to find the parts for the last guy if I decide to run him as the champion I can use some Sternguard parts for him although I do have some MkIII legs and a MkIV torso that might work.  once I've decided who will be the last guy in the command squad I will add some more pictures, their names will all come from Aubrey & Maturin novels.

still waiting for my bits to arrive so have built the DV Librarian (this guy is getting to be as ubiquitous as the nurgle champion) for my marine army and some raptors for Chaos Warband.  I've decided to build my Marine army using unbound rules as this seems to be the main option for 7th edition now, as I'm out of marine parts I've added a pack of PA Wolf Guard & WG Battle Leader.  My phone is dead at the moment so I will add some pictures later in the week.

My chaos Warband now has Nurgle Sorceror, Squad of 5 Nurgle Raptors representing a Chaplain & Assault Co. that have fallen to Chaos and 5 Chosen remnants of the 1st Co. of a once loyal chapter who were purged by the Inquisition due to their traitorous brothers (lost in the warp & rogue Inquisitor in the backstory)

On the loyalist front Squad Gudrun is now completely assembled, along with 1st Scout Squad, a Rune Priest and guest appearance by Emperor's Champion, Pedro Kantor & Sister Hospitaller for my eventual Inquisiitors Retinue still looking for the right female to use for my Inquisitor not sure how the sons of dorn fit in the picture at the moment but they are nice models so I thought why not.

Once i have them undercoated will post some pictures assuming the rain will hold off so I can spray them all.

2nd Tactical Squad and a Devastator Squad are waiting to be assembled.
