Fenris unleashed, The Night Fury is getting paint (slowly)!

Recommended Posts

Hi Greyshift, Thanks for the compliments. Yes its nice to paint a different shade of grey.

Axes are a mixture, those on the Justaerin are from the Justaerin terminator weapons kit, but I have just lopped the tops off of them and replaced them with Long beard great axe heads.

The Hammers have also come from the Hammerers/Long Beard boked sets.

The axe on the Grimnar WIP is from the command set from the Long Beard boxed set.

Continuing on, I have entered the ETL this year with my wolf packs.

Sorry the pictures are small, I have an issue with either IE or my PC as it will not allow copy/ paste into the reply section of B&C

My wolf packs:

First off welcome to BnC.

Those are some good looking wolves. If you're still looking shield designs, I'd be pretty chuffed if you wanted to use my avatar as a basis for one, perhaps making the blue as knot work instead of solid colour. That's my own shield which I use for 12 century reenactment, so it would be awesome to see it on a mini.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Brother Dallo,

Thank you and of course I will use your shield design, thank you.

12th century re-enactments, that must be a lot of fun to do. Do you travel often to take part?

Talking of terminators, look what dropped in the post today.

Yup most of my terminators which have been feasting in the halls of my good friend and mostly DA players house.

I say most because they should all be built up into squads of 5 but some are missing, I will assume it is because I requested my unpainted terminators d'oh!! wallbash.gif

He also forgot to put in my Rune and Wolf Priests who were to be a part of my 2nd vow when I get my TWC done cry.gif

I suspect the Lion had a hand in this...

Anyway the models, some still need patching up and those which are painted or too far gone for the ETL will be resprayed. Should I go for 30K grey or stick to 40K Wolves colours?

DSC02185

DSC02187

2 Wolf Lords, the left one was my Arjac stand in until I caved and bought the Arjac model, the right one is my Erik Morkai, who is meant to be a viciously violent Wolf Lord, and what says better than viciously violent than twin wolf claws??

My Wolf Packs, they should all be in squads of 5, but some are missing presumed painted/ unposted.

And my Lone Wolves, still working on fluff for the Tyberos model (with added gubbins), but the other carries his lost great companies banner, he is all that is left after his company was laid low by a cabal of Thousand Sons sorcerors. He will neither put the banner down nor stop hunting until all the cabal has been brought to heel and his lost brothers avenged. Of his brothers he does not speak, so the sagas cannot record their ending... So it is better hoped they died fighting than the other possibilities...

Personally I've always preferred the pre-heresy grey to baby blue and it would make them dual purpose for 30/40k, but your opinion is obviously most important so go with what you enjoy painting. I love the use of the WFB dwarf weapons, they look fantastic!

Hi AGPO, thank you for the nice comment. Yes the Dwarf weaponry does look great, I do like the runes on the weapons, but a lot of people forget that the "Vikings" were artisans as much as raiders & warriors.

I know that Space Wolves aren't "Vikings" although this is how many people perceive them, so its my little way to show there is more to a warrior than just the weapons :)

I actually like both greys, but I haven't really ever found a satisfactory reason for why the Space Wolves shifted colours after the heresy, other Legionnes founding chapters did not change colours.

I will stick to the 30K grey for the terminators and see how it looks on the TWC, but my big concern is that I will end up with one blob of colour for them. Grey/black wolf being ridden by a grey Space Wolf, not sure.

Anyhoo we shall see when I start getting them painted up.

Thanks for using my shield. As for the re enacting, I'm part of a group in Edinburgh, but most of the events are in England, that we attend. Last event was about a 9 hour coach ride, but it was worth it. Feel free to take this to pm if you want to keep it out of your thread.

I'm liking the lone wolves, especially the fluff of the banner guy.

Thanks Dallo & Dorns_Fist.

This thread is going to go a bit quiet for the next week or so, as I am about to take off on a family holiday.

Hey guys, I go back to blighty and the modelling and painting continues unabated, I will post some more pictures later of some painted models, but first I want to show you some WIPs, that I have been working on.

These will hopefully comprise a large part of my ETL vow second wave.

Honest C&C welcome here :)

So here are most, but not all of my Wolf Lords:

Bran Redmaw. I made this a few years back, before IA11 which is why his weapons load out doesn't match. He was inspired by te picture of the Space Wolves fighting off the Dark Eldar and it was supposedly him in the picture. If we are allowed to show pictures from the codex I will post it up here. My plan for him is to add a wolfs head above his own.

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000644.jpg

Next is Erik Morkai, a super human goliath who exudes menace and a cold hard messy painful death. I tried to capture that with this model. To give a clue as to who he is on the battlefield I put someting above his head. I am not sold on the fur on his back yet and even not sure if the twins should be brought further forward, any ideas, or is it cool like it is?

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000648.jpg

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000649.jpg

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000650.jpg

So what do you think about the wolfs heads, a bit more forwards or is he good to go?

Another Wolf Lord with a penchant for hitting things is Bjorn Stormwolf, he likes loud bashy smashy things, an ork in trans-human form!!

However, given the shield and hammer, I may re-cast him as Egil Ironwolf, theLord who loves metal and engineering! Which gets your vote??

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000647.jpg

And finally the Big Daddy!!

My Logan counts-as, still very much a WIP, let me know what you think... Am I going a bit over the top??

For those of you curious about the sculpting,

I used this stuff

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/310520141921.jpg

Put it in the microwaver in a cup of water for 3 minutes until plyable

And then:

Used items like this to make some casts:.

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/060620141961.jpg

After that i used greenstuff in the moulds and you can see from my Logan & Erik models:

I can't recommend this stuff highly enough!

Quick update.

Wolves mostly done, first layer of basic colours down on almost all of them, furs received a quick wash done, next up is highlights and start the riders.

Riders removed, mostly intact.

Dark Wolves

Brown Wolves..

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000683.jpg

And the babies!!

Next up is the highlights and tidying up, then onto the wolf riders.

These are being painted for speed rather than quality, man I wish I had an airbrush

Hi Squeaky, yep that Blue stuff is amazing!! I definitely recommend it I have never tried insta- mould, this is the first time using anyting like this.

Here is a video of how good it is

I have been quiet for a few days.

Initially I started painting for speed, but these critters are so detailed, every time I thought I was done, something else needed doing.

So 1 day off schedule, but 90% done on the wolves. The plan is to finish them up in conjunction with the riders as some techniques & colours will be common to both. So far i have just stuck to drybrush wash and layers with 1-2 colurs on highlight, no blending or any other techniques used yet, still have eyes and a few bits to tidy but overall happy.

Oh and painting the bases a wee bit as I am not allowed basing materials on the stupid oilrig.

Pictures are on the way, please feel free to comment, or give tips...Tell me if I have made any glaring mistakes etc...Anything that will help make me a better painter.

Cheers guys and Fenrys Hjolda!!!!

Ingmar & Ironfur's pack.

Looking good or in need of a wash of brown and a wee bit more highlights again?

Many thanks Teetengee :)

I think Wolves are probably as close to chaotic as you can get while still staying on the right side of Loyalist.

Have you figured out your geneseed issue yet?

Agreed. As a jab against chaos, of course we steal it, as for the story I am writing, well, that might be the solution, but we shall see.

Just a quick update on my progress with my Thunderwolves. I have finallyu managed to get them to a point in the paint process where I can glue them back into their saddles..
I was getting a bit fed up of them getting knocked off and broken when my colleagues swing by my desk and start picking them up to "see what I have been up to".

To be truthful its actually really nice to have finally found somewhere that I can work on my models and I get some positive comments and encouragement (even if it is from a somewhat captive audience as we are bobbing on the North Sea). The gaffer is even thinking of getting me a desk lamp so I have better light for painting! Most places I have worked I would have to put up with stupid comments, so for once its a nice change....

Anyhoo, wee off-topic moment done. Well besides getting them glued into their saddles (superglue, so I can remove them again if needed) I have managed to get the reds and yellows done on the knee & shoulderpads... b****r I forgot the yellow on the legs!! Plus I managed to get a bit more done on the Wolf Lord Harald Deathwolf. The update is ging to be quite picture intensive so brace yourselves...

I based up the knee & shoulderpads in mechrite red and xv88 (normally I would use tausept ochre, but it has turned to the consistency of crunchy peanut butter, so I thought I would try and alternative this time).
Once this was done I gave the reds a wash of Asurmen Blue and the xv88 a wash of Ogryn Flesh (my gryphonne sepia has finally run out  ) and now everything is nice and dark.

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000742.jpg
http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000743.jpg

Taking the reds up from scab red, redgore, blood red and finally blazing orange, I reined it all in with some Baal red wash.
For the yellows, I worked it up from xv88 to golden yellow in a lot of very thinned out layers. On my terminators I would normally keep going up to sunburst yellow, but as there isn't an "edge" I was worried it would look too cartoon-y. As it was I am hoping I managed to pull off a nice shadow/fade from the bottom to the top of the shoulderpads following the arm position and direction of the model.

They turned out a bit like this:

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000749.jpg
http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000750.jpg

What do you think? Did it work? The lighting isn't the best here and I am not allowed to use a camera flash.

Pack pictures:
Ingmars pack:CHARGE!!!!
http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000755.jpg

Pack 2 Leader: Take my hand if you want to live (or if you are the Eldar) Come & get your Avatar, if you are man enough to face us!!
http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000756.jpg

Pack 3:Run them down, leave none alive!!
http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000757.jpg

And for the Wolf Lord:
http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000751.jpg
http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/P1000752.jpg

And to everyone out there, besides Ingmat & Ironfur (the 1st pack, centre jumpy wolf and big axe) the rest of the thunderwolves still remain nameless and without a shield design, both would be most welcome from yourselves to help personalise my forces... Shield design ideas are at the bottom of page 1, or submit a design of your own.

Thanks for looking :)

But great work I do love the two tone wolves and the one space wolf thrusting the spear to his side!
