Following a disastrous Crusade to Primaris V Marshal Dolourus returns to the Eternal Spirit in shame. High Chaplain Grimaldus escorts him to the High Marshals chamber.

 

“ You have sinned in the eyes of the Emperor.” whispered Helbrecht, his voice audible only to those in his chamber. Although quiet, the disappointment and anger evident spoke volumes.

 

“ My Lord, I…” stammered Dolourus.

 

Grimaldus silenced Dolourus with a hand on his shoulder.

 

“ You would do well to remember your place Kailen. “ Grimaldus spoke the words in a gentle tone, his voice low but powerful.

 

High Marshal Helbrecht, about to admonish Dolourus, kept his tongue, allowing his most trusted Chaplain to take the lead. Dolourus had failed, but his sin had been pride. His tactics had been sound throughout the Crusade, but he should have withdrawn earlier. He had allowed the sin of pride to colour his judgment, sacrificing his men and equipment in the vain hunt for glory.

 

“I have read the report on your actions at Primaris V. Pride, Kailen, your only error in this failed Crusade. How many Brothers did you send to their deaths needlessly? You could not have won, it is not cowardice to withdraw from a fight you can not win. Guilimans sons are correct in that.” Helbrechts voice had lost its menace and had become almost fatherly.

 

“You are a trusted lieutenant Kailen, but you will be punished for your sin. Go now, prepare for your Penitent Crusade. “ ordered Helbrecht. “ I will call for you in time.”

 

Dolourus left, shame colouring his actions.

 

“You knew this would happen my Lord!” It was a statement.

 

“Yes Merek, I knew of his sin,” answered Helbrecht, “As I knew or yours. His losses in this campaign will be eclipsed by the victories he will achieve in those to come.”

 

“That’s why you requested I join him.” It was another statement.

 

“Yes, I knew only one with your ‘talents’ could make him see sense. He will brood and punish himself, when he is ready, I will release his fury again. He is destined for greatness, but we must mould his fury, direct his ZEAL until he is the warrior The Emperor demands.”
