Well bloody hell. I thought those were Cataphracti. Again, excellent job & thanks for letting me know about the heads. I've been thinking about ordering a set of the Cataphracti  but after your explanation & seeing yours, Justaerins are the way to go. I have a buddy who plays Dwarves & says if I need bits. let him know. He gave me some here a while back & I used two of the shoulder guards as knee pads for one of my WGTDA. Turned out really well IMO. Have 2 of the axes that I've been wanting to do something with but holding off till the new Dex. Hope to see more of your work. Keep it up.

I never thought to use the dwarf shoulderpads as Terminator knee pads, that is a stellar idea, I may need to borrow it! WOuld be a good way of individualising Wolf Lords,

The Justaerin terminators are great, but its a bit fiddly with all the eyes, I would advise that if you get the option to not buy the justaerin weapon sets then go for the regular cataphract weapon sets. This will allow you to make up the combi weapons and you still have hammers, mauls etc that you can put the dwarf axe heads on to.

You should look at Skeletoro's thread he is doing great stuff with the cataphractii's too. Cataphracts work really well, so you can mix and match them up. I got mine as trades and off ebay so I was a bit limited

If your friend doesn't have the bits you need there is a good ebay shop from the States bits-world and they do a ton of stuff at good prices, its where I got most of my dwarf bits from. The dwarf shields are too small though.

Thanks for the tip about bits-world. Been looking at doing an order for bits for a while now. The knee pads work out fairly easy. Just trim off the face of them and a little bit of the sides & its almost like they were meant to be.

Black Dagger Games is another good one for bits, cheaper shipping than Bits World. I go back and forth between the two depending on what is available and what I want. Both do combined shipping, so choice is more of who has what when your looking

I'll give blackdagger a look, if international postage isnt too bad then I may get bits from there too.

I stripped some of my models with fairy power spray... The best stuff in the UK, strips paint in minutes, max overnight and doesn't damage the plastic or metal.

Anyway stripped my Ragnar I did about 15 years ago, a couple of Rune priests and my 10+year old Krom, plus Lukas and a wolf guard with twin claws.

The grey primer is car primer, cheaper than GW and almost as good. A pretty good match to dawnstoe, so the plan is to darken them a few shades with nuln oil and then drybrush and highlight them up. Get them close to where the terminators are at and tackle them all as 1 block.

Its either that or hit them up with mechanicus standard grey and get them the same colour as the terminators...

The banner on your Bjorn found on page 3; what's that from?  I feel like I've seen it before but I can't find it and it's bugging me!

I look forward to seeing those characters painted!

it looks like the Forge World Space Wolf venerable dreadnought.

@Dantay: I absolutely love the use of the Fantasy dwarf weapons, and if i see right, empire tuetogen guard warrior hammer.

WLK

Hi, yes WLK & Fray, the banner on Bjorn is the FW Space Wolf venerable dreadnoughts banner.

Unfortunately the stupid thing keeps falling off as they never made a decent mounting for it on the model. I am getting so fed up of it snapping off I might just do away with it and make it into a company banner for one of the Grey Hunters to cart around! Besides with a very spiffy new Bjorn coming up at the weekend the FW dread may not be Bjorn for much longer.

WLK: I have used Teutogen guard hammers yes, but for my Grey Hunters. Compared to the dwarf stuff they are a bit small and puny.

On the 2 Rune priests, the one holding the Gaunts head has Ar-Ulrics axe, as I feel it has a nice almost shamanic look to it, whilst the other Rune Priest has Ar-Ulrics staff. Good spot though!!

I love the dwarf stuff too, just the right amount of norse decoration and they also look like actual weapons too. Perfect for the Wolves!

I wish I had your press-mould casting skills~

Your dedication to freehand shield designs is impressive! I really like those Justaerin conversions, in fact I'm leaving this thread before I start wanting some FW TDA of my own...

Oh, actually, Sven, where did you get that shield design? I love it. Kudos to you, Dantay, for the job you did freehanding it onto the shield, too.

Thanks for the compliments on the shields :)

As for the press moulding,  highly recommend blue-stuff, by www.greenstuffworld.com

2 minutes in the microwave to soften, mould around your item and a few minutes to set and you are good to go!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey guys. Things have been a bit slow of late. Trying to catch up with the new codex and uch like. Plus my wife has put an embargo on my model buying grrr!!!

I have a way around it though msn-wink.gif

So what have I been up to? Well I brought out my terminators and also this bad boy!!

Ready for some fly-bys and generally giving the Wolves some AA- close support. Its still half bult as I have had to use a fair amount of Green stuff on it, partly what you expect from a FW model and partly my own over zealousness to get it built.. With tha in mind I have made a tentative start on painting small areas of the model and need some advice!!

I am going for a Heresy era very dark grey, almost black look in the hope i will look nice and aged, but I am also considering doing the underside of it a lighter grey. Not for camouflage, but in all the pictures and movies, the Wyrm and Wyverns have a lighter underside compared to the rest of their scaly skin and I thought to emulate that on my Fire Raptor.

Do you think it's a good idea? Also should I use the panel lines as the break point between the 2 colours or should I do a wee smidgeon of blending between the 2?

Or should I just go for a straight Dark grey all over?

Here is where I am at so far..

P1000930

Side view: Change colours along the lower panel?

P1000931

Under side: Do I keep it all dark or go for the lighter underside?

P1000932

Started getting paint into the cockpit, need to finish up all the dials, scrrens and buttons. And get the scanner array straightend out too. The hatch behind the pilot will get a nice shield design in the centre too.

Ball turrets almost completed... Man there is an overwhelming amount of detail on these. Will magnetise the guns when I get home to my magnets. Outer casing needs tified up and highlights done on the grey.

So any hints tips, oinions C&C?

So 3 votes to the dawnstone eh?

I have to admit, I tried the fenrisian grey and bleh!!

Downstone it shall be...

Trying my hand at effects... What do you think of the heat stain??

P1000944

I might give it a go on the engines too

More to come

Hey guys, happy lunch time... Yep the day is half done!! :)

However it is not all good news today. I have realised that I cannot complete my Raptor before going back onshore! This is due to me forgetting to pack my spare pot of standard mechanicus grey, so painting of the upper hull and wings may have to go on hold... (Plus I also forgot to pack any brush bigger than a GW detail brush, besides the big drybrush, what a muppet I am)

So what does that mean for the Raptor? Well although I can't complete, it doesn't mean that I shouldn't stop. So to that end I will get the underside painted and maybe coated with Agrax Earthshade instead of Nuln Oil (curious to see what kind of difference it will make to the model).

It also means I can focus on the other bits and the fiddly details which make this a superb model.

To that end I have made a start on the engines and missile pods.

There is still a fair way to go, and the engine cowling is looking a bit (brassy). What do you guys think? I am trying to get an aged golden colour, so I'd like to take it up to a similar brightness as I did on the turrets.

P1000937

Will it look good as gold? Do I keep the engines brazen? Or should I go for something darker, like the black engine covers on the other end?

Thanks for listening to my ramblings and please hit me with some feedback, I could do with all the help I can get, I really want to make this a centrepiece for my army.

Thanks, but I will not be weathering the front end with the heat effect but the back where the jets exit. I'll maybe do some chipping on the front end as its likely bee hit by micro-particles stones, etc as it zooms about.
I am actually quite nervous about doing weathering as I have never done it on any of my models before.

In other news, a very depressed wife. She went to book her plane tickets to visit her mum to find they went up nearly £200.

Thankfully the same day a cheque from the taxman arrived for  a little over the price hike of the tickets.

So I guess for once I should be grateful to HMRC... No painting done tonight as consoling grumpy wifey and trying to get a good deal on a pair of tickets. Will update tomorrow... Promise!

I miss understand what you were asking, thought you were talking about the front cowling. One problem with reading while on my tractor is the sun washes out the pics, looked like the rear engine portion was finished. A little soot and scorching to finish?

Hope you wife's trip works out. Consoling the wife is definitely more important than our hobbies. Lost my painting time last night due to an unhealthy wife. Happy wife, happy life, and time to play with our toy soldiers.
