BCK's ETL WIP Vostroyans

Recommended Posts

I figure I should start one of these instead of clogging up the ETL thread. Enough talk! Updates!

I got the shoulder pad done on the standard bearer:

I'm not real happy with the work on the mask and will probably have another go at it tomorrow.

In my all encompassing thread in the WIP forum, I posted some art I was using as inspiration for the Officer of the Fleet, and here's the two I printed out to keep at my work table:

For a refresher, here's the figure in a 'before' shot:

I got a lot done on him today, and first was to use the Dremel to grind away the plastic on the lower end of the uniform and

leave two legs from the material. I also sectioned him at the waist, trimmed away the old belt and pouches, and lengthened the torso a little because this figure almost looked like a child or very short adult standing next to the Vostroyan figures:

At first, I thought I would keep the fabric as it was and just add a thin layer of greenstuff on top of it, but the muse had other ideas. It told me to cut and file away all of the folds and practically rebuild the entire front of the uniform. I also added the legs of the trousers where they will be slightly bloused over the boots, once I do them.

Cool, great to see some more excellent GSing! I think the Baneblade commander will looks almost unrecognisable aside from the head when you're done.

Yeah, he will. I wanted to keep the greenstuffing to a minimum wherever possible to speed up this vow, but sometimes I'm not always in control of where the project goes.

Indeed! Fine work!

Incredibly good!

Wow, those are some mad greenstuffing skills you've got there. I'm really looking forward to the finished product.

Thanks, brothers!

A few updates, starting with the OotF:

A rather straight forward kitbash for the vox trooper:

And throwing this guy in as a 'before' pic, because he's gonna change a lot very shortly:

Very interested in seeing what you've planned for the Cultist.

Something like this guy in the red robes:

Basically, a walking cogitator/plotter/data slate for the Master of Ordnance and the Officer of the Fleet. biggrin.png

Fantastic! I love slaves aides for officers. Good choice of mini to base it on, too. Inspired!

Well, Vostroya is a forge world and has close ties to the Mechanicus(hence the red uniforms), so I a few thrall aides made from criminals or deserters here and there wouldn't go amiss.

Here's a the figure chopped up and reassembled with a big chunk of sheet plastic on his back to try out a size for the cogitator:

Most of the robes will be resculpted along with the shoulders, the arms will not be there, and I'm going to put some kind of power unit on the chest. So far, so good.

I started on the Master of Ordnance today, and because I have a very long day planned tomorrow, I wanted to get a lot done on him.

I picked the vox trooper as the base figure:

I like the chainmail coif he has on and the arm upraised to the headset, but the idea I had for the conversion was going to require a lot of material to be removed. Here's a normal figure next to what was left after the sawing, clipping, shaving, and Dremeling:

http://i.imgur.com/jXgUZzG.jpg

The legs were removed, the gun was removed with clippers, the right hand was cut off, I removed as much of the gun material as I could between the body and the arm, and then took the Dremel and ground away the rest of the gun, thinned down the torso where the chainmail was, and ground off most of the right side of the coat that was below his belt. I kept the boots up to the ankles, pinned them to the body, and then broke out the greenstuff.

Here's what it looks like now:

(The colors look off because the bare metal is so shiny I had darken and adjust it a LOT to make those parts viewable)

As I mentioned in a previous post, I usually speed up the curing time of the putty with a lamp, and I worked in three stages. The first was simply a big block of greenstuff to cover up the area where the legs used to be. I let it sit under a lamp for about 45 mins and when I came back, I realized I had made the legs too short. >_<

After adjusting the feet and the pins, I added more GS to fill in the new gap made by the adjustment and put it back under the lamp. When that was cured, I added a thinner layer on top of the block form and sculpted the new, longer coat and put it under the lamp again. Once that was cured, I did the breastplate and facial hair.

I think this is the most work I've done on a single figure in one day, and if it's not, it's gotta be close. Still have to add some little details and a right hand, so I've got a ways from finishing it, but I'm proud of the progress I made.

Excellent work once more, you're making very good progress so you're right to be proud. Well done, the Emperor will surely notice your hard work and devotion!

Thanks, but I doubt the Big E will notice enough to set Vostroya free from its debt...

I have an update on the MoO! I've begun to add a sash around his waist(under the belt) with the long ends down the side of his right leg:

I'll add the fringe stuff on the bottom later.

I have also started on the Commander!

I've never tried sculpting fur before, but a good solid foundation for that hat is a must! Pardon the shine on the the new bits, but I just finished the sculpting work and it's still wet with oil.

Of course He does, you've just not earned it yet. Just between you and me I had a word with Him and he said he might consider it but there needs to be a lot more models. Especially tanks. Yes, lots of tanks.

The MoO is coming along very well, the new additions much improve him! I like Creed, or should we call him Kreedov? :P

Oooh, I hadn't seen that before. I've seen a few Creed-to-Vostroyan conversions before, but that one is probably the best yet. I might have to PM him about how he sculpted that fur. Thanks for the link!

Kreedov sure gets around!

Excellent work, BCK. Really great GS skills.

My conversion illness wouldn't let me do a simple command squad, and even though I've had some painful reminders of what it's like converting metal figures, it's kinda nice to go old-school again. :)

I tried some fur sculpting last night before bed on the vox trooper, and think it came out decently:

http://i.imgur.com/j4b2edi.jpg

I attempted to sculpt the fur with my trusty clay shapers, but that wasn't happening at all. I had to break out a metal tool for the first time in a while.

Earlier today I gave it another go on the standard bearer:

I was starting to find a good pattern and rhythm to the fur, so I decided to try it on the hat for the commander:

I also filled in the spot between his belt and chest armor with cloth from the coat and added a suitably Vostroyan 'stache. smile.png

Looks good, I think a lot of the fur appearance is in the paint job so I reckon that's more than good enough. I really can't wait to see these guys all painted up! biggrin.png

Very good work on the fur!

This is really inspired work. I can't wait to see it with some paint on.

Thanks, brothers. :)

I didn't get as much work done today as the schedule for my new job is kicking my butt, though I do have a few small updates.

For the commander, I added some decorative touches to the front of the coat, but I didn't want to get too crazy with the bling:

http://i.imgur.com/cAwgrhA.jpg

There's a few spots to smooth out on the coat, but otherwise I think I'm calling him done in regards to the modeling phase(read: paint soon!)

For the OotF, I thought I might try using the glue and tissue technique of mine to build a frame, if you will, for the coat he'll have draped over his shoulders:

I was so tired, I didn't even notice that I haven't resculpted the boots until I had the pic in the image editor. /sigh
