Joker's Space Wolf Project

Recommended Posts

I have wanted to start Space Wolf force for years now, and as I get back into the hobby/game in time for 7th Ed. things fell quite nicely into place.

My Wolves are 'inspired by', NOT BASED ON, House Stark from George R.R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' and the HBO teleplay version, Game of Thrones.

I say 'inspired by', because I am only using a few things from Martin and HBO, the rest is me and the Space Wolves. I am not trying to recreate the fantasy world of Westeros, but my army will be dark, gritty, and dirty, with things that remind me of the Starks, not try to shoe-horn them into a world where nine foot warriors in ceramite and plassteel are common. At the same time, there will be some blatant theft from Mr. Martin and HBO.

I started with two things. A wallpaper found on a google search started things off and the B&C SM Painter solidified the vision in my head.

The wallpaper contains the Great Company logo of Eddard Direwolf, Lord of the Wolves of Winterfell.

-See, Blantant Theft, and it turned out to not sound nearly as cheesy as I was afraid it might-

I will be using the bloody streaks to denote the different packs, ie 1, 2, 3, etc. The text will most likely be reserved for vehicles or full banners.

As for the color test, the brown on the chest and heads is a reference to dark leather and the grey is a much more 'gothic' tone than Space Wolves Grey.

So let's put some Space Wolves together, staring with a 10 Man Grey Hunter Pack. Let's use swords, axes, shields and spears, tying in medieval weapons without letting them take over. There is quite a mix of parts in this pack, the Space Wolves box, the Space Marine Command box, WFB Chaos/Empire, and Khorne Berzerkers were all used. I tried very hard to make each model unique in pose and personality, while carrying the feel of a single Pack.

Right-Hand guy above has lost his fancy backpack, the Lord needed it.

So now, we need someone to lead them. Should be a pretty beastly chap, correct? I decided to build my own Wolf Lord because you cannot buy a Wolf Lord model in Power Armor, without it being mounted or Ragnar. I wanted him to be imposing, so I went with a semi-true scale version with TDA legs and a thickened torso. I also placed him up on a scenic base that I had on-hand.

So that's where I am so far. I hope to take a cool concept, and not let it get too cliche as I turn it into my first Wolves army and by far the most visually interesting thing I have done with models to date. I hope to have some paint pictures next week, so I hope you stick around to see.

Looking good so far dude, really nice kitbashing, I will be following this thread with interest. I have made a few adjustments to my own wolves with some extra weapons (mostly axes to be fair) and kit from some of the WFB and chaos marauder/warrior kits, the brutal look of them seems to complement the 'killing with effieciency' aesthetic that the sixth are known for msn-wink.gif Keep up the good work !

Looking real good Joker. Cant wait to see how the colour scheme works out, I'd leave out the green trim on the shoulder pads though, too DA for my liking. The marauder heads look spot on for the barbaric/feudal theme your going for. I see lots of Fen Wolves in your future.

Nice looking models and a neat idea.  I'm hoping your going to include some guard allies to represent the crows on the wall currently being led by Jon Snow (forgotten their name).

Thanks for the comments and the kind words! I'll be checking my paints and brushes today to see if any have survived my cryosleep.

I am also debating a pretty serious conversion project for my Rune Priest/Maester.

I'm just happy to see you posting on the B&C again. :)

New to GoT, myself, but I'll be watching closely. I've always thought the Wolves colors should vary from company to company, with the use of grey as the common denominator. Looking forward to paint!

Nice... but is the Lord carrying a DA sword? That swordtip needs some de-BSing involving a hobby knife...

I am going to try a paint technique that SHOULD hide the DA-ness of the sword... I'm going to try that before I shave it down. msn-wink.gif

Paints are checked and seem to be completely functional. Years of storage and two moves, 1st across the US and then across the Pacific, seem to have had little to no effect. Brushes , on the other hand, seem to have suffered rather badly. I am going to try basecoating with the brushes I have while I wait for new ones to arrive. I also placed a decent size order for more models and reinforcements consisting of two boxes of Thunderwolf Cavalry, two boxes of Fenrisian Wolves and two more boxes of Grey Hunters are on the way.

Meanwhile, I am going to attempt another custom character. I want to use a Rune Priest to fill the role of Maester Luwin [a kind of medical/spiritual advisor in Westeros, for the uninitiated]. I am going to start with the Librarian from the Dark Vengeance set as a base model and see what I can do to de-Angel him and Wolf him up.

LOL, Joker, I as planning a very similar thing for a pack of wolves, but incorporating some elements from Malazan Book of the Fallen "Wolves of Winter" as well. I'll be very interested to see how yours turn out!

Joker,

What all are the bitz you used on for the torso for the wolf lord? It looks like a gorget (presumably from an empire kit?), some torso, & a spacewolves loincloth? Anyways, it's a killer model, really well done. All of the models have a good amount of personality in them. I like the whole concept, too. It's funny, I've been thinking of doing something similar, but perhaps a kill team based off of various favorite characters of mine from the show.

I look forward to seeing more of your project!!!

For the torso, I went with an Empire Gorget from the http://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Empire-General, a standard SW torso, comes with the front and back pelts, and a wolf skull, also from the SW kit for the Belt of Russ. The torso has also been widened with plasticard to fit the size of the TDA legs.

Paint has started on the test model!

I like the concept very much, and the kit bashing is inspired, are you planning on using the dire wolf on the sheilds?

In honestity I'd personally say don't run a IG allies as "Nights Watch" as it isn't very fitting for a organisation that is, in the books at least, equal to if not higher in standing than a great house.

I'd see the Nights Watch more along the lines of a Raven Guard successor than a regiment of IG.

And now I've given myself an idea for a new chapter lol

Anyway, can't wait to see more Joker

OK, double-post foul.

Sorry.

Citadel's brush-on Imperial Primer is garbage. furious.gif It has had a pretty serious negative effect on the color test model, he needs to be stripped down and re-started. I have decided to put off the painting until I can get my hands on some decent spray primer here in Japan. Luckily, along with six boxes of models, I got my green stuff and brushes today, so I should be able to rock and roll as soon as I get the primer issue sorted.

While I wait, I'm going to press forward on the rest of the force, assembling two TWC units, the large pack of Fenrisian Wolves and two more Grey Hunter packs, one to escort Lord Eddard, and one bog-standard pack.

Bummer about the primer.

I use car primer from auto stores, it seems to work okay and is generally cheaper than GW, Army painter etc...

Another tip I have heard for spray primer, but never used is to warm the can in some warm (not boiling hot) water, so it sprays as a finer mist.

Are the Grey Hunters with Lord Eddard going to be grey hunters with the addition of power weapon and special weapon, while the other is bare bones? Or is Eddards pack going to be a Wolf Guard huscarl retinue to protrct the Jarl and the other pack is standard Grey Hunters?
