The Rune Priests Thread

Fantastic summary squark, thank you.

I've been thinking about building an army around the PA Njal (mainly because I'd like to try the new psychic phase out and also the model is gathering dust). I was just wondering whether you think biomancy or divination would be the way to go? By the looks of it really there are two main ways to play our rune priests at this time. Firstly, in a defensive support role sitting at the back buffing the long fangs and raining death on the enemy. Secondly, we have the option to go all out offensive and hopefully tun the priest into an assault machine.

While Njal doesn't seem to strike me as an 'in-your-face' kind of psyker (like Mephi) his game effects really seem to favour getting him into the thick of things. I just get the impression if you don't get your casts off or if you get really bad powers to begin with then he can end up too fragile.

I guess my question is how do you think you would build him into your army to get the most out of the points? My initial thoughts were in a LR or drop pod probably with WG terminators to hopefully deflect some of the pesky shooting folks seems to do when you plonk a unit in their deployment zone.

to be honest, I don't think Njal is even close to being worth his points in his current incarnation, given the FAQs... multiple FAQs on more than one occasion that have significantly weakened his main draw cards. At 200, he might be worth it as is, but for now I'd much prefer to field the model as a Master of Runes with TDA, for barely over half the price...

I know that's not a very helpful answer.

It is, as this was my other option. I considered building a list with 2 ML2 level RPs one offensive and 1 defensive (the a.k.a "Wyrd Twins"). It would be 290 pts for 1 in TDA and one in Runic.

Just interested to see if there is any way we can build a supporting army to help make Njal, as he is, viable. Loss of the rulebook powers hit him hard. They would have been great now if he could cast more than 2 of them.

I have been wondering if we will get the codex powers back in the new dex, in the form of a Powers Table as in the rulebook. One listed as the 'Primaris' which we would get automatically plus rolling for the others? Maybe they only stopped us using the powers until our update so it matches the mechanics of the 7th ed??

Just thinking out loud!

Seems like other than the 7th ed FAQ, it may be that no codex has recently lost their codex powers?

Apart from Grey Knights (who have mostly been subsumed into Sanctic) and vanilla marines (whose powers were fairly eclectic and for the most part have been cannibalized by the BRB disciplines - so they can still access them to some extent).

There isn't much precedent to suggest blood angels and space wolves won't get codex specific disciplines with their new codices, but never say a double negative will never not happen.

I have been considering a RP on a bike for a variety of applications. I am considering him with a 5-15 pack of wolves and, biomancy, hoping for endurance, iron arm, and enfeeble. I think that would make a nasty hunting pack, with the RP specializing in demons, and a ton of wounds and attacks to buff against squads, absorb long range fire and to provide a nasty tar pit for anything I'm concerned about. He could defend the back line from deep striking units and chase down some of the pesky shooty units. I have never play tested wolves however, this is obviously just speculation.

I usually run a RP with my long fangs and try for divination buffs, and have not played a game over 1000pts, so I'm not sure how I should expand.

G'day all, new here, but I saw this thread and felt I could contribute with a few Rune Priests I've painted up in recent months!

This one's an old metal cast of Njal Stormcaller I painted back in May, and then I felt I needed a guy on a bike, because I missed the FAQ and thought we still had our old powers, so here's the result of that endeavour;

Haven't had much of a chance to use them yet, but without access to all the old RP powers, I'll just be using him as a regular Priest.
Thanks for looking, sorry for the links but this site doesn't accept Imgur links.

1. Stick them on to my models in the appropriate location tongue.png

2. remove the collar behind the rune priests head and shave down the sides of the shoulderpad, so yo get a T shape and use it as a psychic hood by gluing where the rear collar was.

3.Blank pads to paint on runes (the SW skull pads work well for making wolf priests)

Many Rune Priests are the classic models with the shoulderpad already a part of the model with runes sculpted on

I also noticed a terminator rune priest with a FW shoulderpad too.

Also technically Rune and Wolf Priests are not assigned to a Wolf Lord, they come under the auspice of the Great Wolf, so they do not need to bear great company markings, if you don't want to. I plan to mark mine with the Great WOlfs company symbol.

As mentioned in the 5th ed. Codex: Erik Morkai never truly forgave his more stable brother Irnist the Wise after he left his great company to become a wolf priest.

Does that help?

Irnst the Wise is a Rune Priest, not a Wolf Priest.  Regardless, although all of the Priests are technically a part of the Great Wolf's Great Company, they usually have long-standing relationships with, and operate with the various other Great Companies on a long-term, if not permanent basis; for example, old fluff had it that Njal always worked with Ragnar's Great Company, so that his great wisdom would be available to the youngest of the Wolf Lords.  Thus, Erik Morkai is upset because Irnst has chosen to actually stay with Logan and work directly with him during campaigns, rather than choosing to stay at Erik's side, which he could have chosen to do.

I thought that rune priests didn't use psychic hoods as they use their runic weapons for that
