Lone Wolves

Quote

Despite all of their skill, despite all of their valor, the Space Wolves do not always emerge victorious.  It is not uncommon for each pack to lose a few more good men with every new campaign, and even the greenest recruit understands that this is the natural order of things; a process that sorts the exceptional from those are are merely strong.  Over the centuries most packs, reduced to a handful of warriors, will continue to fight at reduced capacity as Grey Hunters and Long Fangs.  Sometimes, though, a pack will suffer so terribly that it is reduced to a single survivor; one who has lost his brothers to a man and yet has not earnt a place in the vaunted Wolf Guard.  One who has no pack.  One who has no rank.  One with nothing left to him but bitter revenge.

These Lone Wolves, as they are known, are Space Wolves on a quest to avenge the honor of their fallen packmates.  Over the  bodies of his fallen pack, a Lone Wolf will swear a great oath of vengeance, painstakingly etching the names of his kin upon his blade or even into his flesh.  As his oath nears completion, he vows to hunt down the most monstrous foe he can find.  This he will slay in the name of his breather or die in the attempt.  In this way the Lone Wolf will win back his lost pack's honor and rejoin them in the afterlife with a fine tale with which to greet his kin.  So it is that the Space Wolves' advance is often preceded by lone figures stalking through the mists, each hunting a glorious death in battle.

One a Lone Wolf has taken his oath, he shuns the company of his fellows.  Not for him the joyous fellowship of the feast or the cleansing purity of the open skies - from that moment forth he spends every waking moment physically and mentally preparing for the final battle.  Even the Great Wolf himself would not obstruct or countermand the destiny a Lone Wolf has chosen for himself, for the Space Wolves take matters of honor and of kin very seriously indeed.  Alone in his cell before battle, the last survivor of such a lost pack will take up his axe and shield, preparing to meet his death with a snarl on his lips and a weapon in his hand.

All too often the sagas of the Lone Wolves end in the bone-strewn lair of some vile monstrosity or under the heel of an alien warlord.  Occasionally, though, the Lone Wolf will emerge bloodied but triumphant, carrying the head of his quarry back to his Great Company with a grim smile fixed upon his lips.  Such individuals are almost always inducted into the Wolf Guard, their new comrades at the feasting table welcoming them with great jubilation, an enormous platter of roasted elk and enough ale to kill a mammoth.

This thread is dedicated to Lone Wolves of the Space Wolves Chapter.   Members of The Fang are encouraged to post pictures of their own Lone Wolves, provide their own fan-made fluff for them, and to share their preferred Tactics, Tips, and Tricks related to using these grim heroes in games of 7th Edition Warhammer 40k.

I think super heavy transports are a scary thing with lone wolves.

They can carry any number of units totalling no more than their transport capacity. So... 2 GH packs with TDAWGPLs could bring 3 TDA lone wolves along with them in their thunderhawk (leave aside that that's 4 elite slots) and have them tarpit/counter assault/pop transports for them - plus it has an assault ramp, yay!

I love me some termi Lone Wolves!!

Here's my first Lone Wolf, Haakon Strumgald. He has been seeking vengeance for over 2 years now and in that time he has only been killed 4 times!! Three of those times have been from Dark Eldar shooting the hell out of him with poisoned attacks. He's killed all kinds of beasties though. He is truly a champion of Russ!!

End of Line

I don't remember seeing this thread before. Here are my two Lone Wolves.

Ivar Broad-Hug with counts as Chainfist and Wolf Claw. I think the Wolf Claw blades are a different color now but I dont have an updated pic

Sven Rat-Nose with what will most often be a counts as Wolf Claw and Storm Shield

I swap my TDA back and forth, but this guy was conceived and painted as a lone wolf. I left his shoulder and knee pad black, an empty space morning the loss of a squad he dose not speak of ( like the 13th co.)

While I love the fluff of the lone wolves I've had trouble fitting them into lists I would love any help or advice on this subject I candle just about any variant I want with the bits I have just looking for direction currently in the campaign I'm a part of/running there is a flyrant running rampant so I feel like he is going to be a big game hunter.

To be honest, on the tabletop they were nerfed slightly with our latest edition (probably rightly as they used to be pretty nails). So although they dont take up a slot most of the time, they lost the ability to take SS/CF combination, and beastslayer was nerfed a bit too.

They are still a useful distraction unit though, id still kit out with TDA, and then take a SS, and either a wolf claw or thunder hammer/PF. I like the TH/PF as it allows you to hunt armour if needs be.

The problem with him chasing down a flyrant is going to be his speed. but you could always just have him tag alongside any unit you think the flyrant may target in CC (although i thought the go to tactics with flyrants is to have them constantly flying and shooting stuff), and use him as a counterattack unit to weigh into the combat when it happens.

Here's my first...

Need to decide on a name for him....something that incorporates 'scarab slayer'. He's played one game and single-handedly took out countless scarabs....unfortunately that is his only saga so far...

This guy is my 'jack of all trades' dude....WGPL, WG, Lone Wolf.....does them all...or at least will do when I've played enough games...

Not exactly a Lone Wolf (though in a sense he is), but I've been working on a Wolf Brother, last of his Chapter, and out to remove the stain of their dishonor (and that of any other fallen members of the Rout) from the Imperium.

Sure it's a long term job, but think of all the overtime you can get in 10,000+ years of full time service!

The fluff for him will follow in time, I'm planning on building a whole Codex around him and his 'Bane Wolves'.  So far I've got around 1/3 of the Datasheets I'm looking at converted, mixed Imperial Guard with Space Wolf and a little Horus Heresy era stuff thrown in for flavor.

@Damtay: the faceplant is an issue if the model placed quickly or treated without care. I recommend gluing a quarter to the base. It's the same diameter and gives the model actual value lol. If your home country doesn't have quarters or similarly sized coins the local hardware store surely has metal washers for literally dirt cheap.

The model came with a scenic metal baseplate to attach to, so placement was kind of determined for me. I did try to put him as far back as possible.

The coin idea is actually a good one and something I have used on several models. If he ever makes it off the shelf for a game, I will stick a penny under him :)
