Grey Knights Thunderhawk Gunship!

Hi guys,

I've been hard at work on this model for the last month or so. It was a request for a Grey Knights army, with all the weapon options magnetized: two cannon options, all TL Psycannons can be swapped with TL Heavy Bolters, missiles can be removed (as can be seen in some photos).

I wanted to get a unique looking heraldry pattern on the ship, something that would look very appropriate in a Grey Knights force. I ended up sketching about 8 different designs in photoshop over a all-silver Thunderhawk, and choosing the most balanced and appropriate design. Then I made sure the heraldry patterns (skulls on white, swords on red, battlement pattern) was just right.

Thanks for the kind complements!

The red is:

* Mephiston Red

* Vallejo Model Air - Scarlet Red (comparable to old Blood Red maybe)

* Evil Suns Scarlet

* Black Wash

* 2nd layer Evil Suns Scarlet highlights/details

It's just basically starting with a dark red base and working up to the highlights.

I don't mean this in an insulting way, but did you play with the saturation in Photoshop? That red looks... Unreal. Intense. Seriously, I'm not trolling or anything. Just curious. That may be the most intense red I've ever seen on any model.

Ovidius Incertus: They are sculpted. I used a wooden disk, carved out a little bit with a dremel so that the craters had some depth, then I used cut out triangles of foam to build up the walls of the craters, and then I sculpted over all of that with wood filler, flocking, gravel etc. Here's a work-in-progress pic:

JeffTibbetts: No problem. I adjusted the image as whole to bring out some brightness, but I did not touch up the red besides that (meaning, I increased the brightness of the whole image). I take my photos in a very dark room with a lot of diffused light, so I need to edit the photos in PS a little just to bring them up to normal levels of brightness that I work at. Granted, some of the photos are a little oversaturated I admit, but it's mostly for clarity. I spent a LOT of time on the red parts of the ship -- at least 5 layers of paint, oftentimes more like 7. Here's an untouched photo -- I only changed the size of the photo so it wasn't 4000 pixels wide:

Actually, I like the non-PS red a lot better. I understand what you did (in general), but your red is still pretty amazing looking. Granted the whole PS version is brighter, but I like the straight one more.

You did a magnificent job on the color proportions and everything looks ace. I'm not sure why the owner would have had you do psycannon and heavy bolters, but then his toy, his rules. :)

You should be very proud of this effort.

Thank you, everyone, for the complements!

Yeah, especially when the upgrade for TL Psycannons is only 40 points for all four of them. Why would anyone want HBs on a 1000pt model?

Looking back now, I think I should have taken the middle-road in regards to brightness. Some of the images work well, but others are just way too bright. Well, I still have all the original images I can re-edit.

Wonderful looking piece you have here.  I am really impressed with the reds as well.  I am also very impressed with the ratio of red and silver you have here.  Often I see people that have too much of one and it throws the model.  You have achieved a great middle ground and the end result is stunning.

LordOrdGermany: Yup, I edited the photo in Photoshop. Sometimes I like photographing and editing more than painting tongue.png

I also do a lot of rotating animations of my models -- you can see them on my website.

Here's another one I did this morning. A little less saturated reds:
