Grey Knights- 2nd Army

Venator

Recommended Posts

I'm relatively new to 40k, and have been a serial lurker for sometime. I have painted about a 1000 points of Salamanders with limited success. They look ok (as good as a first army ever looks!laugh.png ) However, I got caught in a bit of a rut with my Sallies as I wanted them all to look the same. This really hampered my progression in the end as I wanted to try new techniques, but couldn't as the old ones would have looked different.

I figured I would try to give Grey Knights a whirl to improve my painting abilities, and try to learn new skills. I'm determined to see an improvement in every one. I've almost finished a test mini, so I thought I would post it for C and C's to see what I can do to improve for the next one. I've airbrushed him black, followed by thinner coats of progressively brighter silvers. I've then given him a gloss coat, inked him, and then picked out the details. I think the best/most technical bit was the blade.

I tried doing a bit of layering(I think its called that) on the storm bolter, but I'm not sure if you can see it. I've ordered the photo etch sprue from FW, and I'm planning on putting one of the ]['s on his left shoulder to hide the crooked line. Needless, to say I still have his head to do!

Well its been a hectic few months - but I've finally started to make some progress again. ...

First Knight finally finished, second one done as well plus an ADL.  The AGL is 99% done - it just needs a coat of matt varnish.  C and C's are definitely welcome as I want to improve.  Should I persevere with them or scrap them?  I'm determined to have a nice looking army and I can't decide whether these guys tick the box.http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/Mobile%20Uploads/13D5C430-88ED-46B1-8B2F-1EA51983B77B_zpsxp5hubrr.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/Mobile%20Uploads/1E7B3ACC-E4E2-446C-A532-4EB17AC6D746_zps1tj6yr2c.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/Mobile%20Uploads/DE58BD54-5F04-4219-8D92-62950E13F37C_zpsvc6grzuo.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/Mobile%20Uploads/4D508F76-5F00-46AF-A25D-8063C86B259B_zps3aduc3in.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/Mobile%20Uploads/2E9ECD23-90F0-4829-9BF1-0796E134E3F7_zpsgrezrejy.jpg

Thanks Chaplainmikey - they're the resin bases from Micro Art.  I'm quite happy with them, plus they have helped me get better at painting hazard stripes.

Todays progress....

I got some more work done on my Termi, plus got his halberd bald sprayed.  I've also spent some time stripping a cheap crashed Aquilla I got on eBay. http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/CF6005A5-5805-47BF-9A73-DE4AAB5F8B80_zps8swcb3fj.jpg

This mornings progress.  The base has been primed, then given a black undercoat.  Hopefully this afternoon I will be able to get the three shades of green sprayed on......Please feel free to C&C!

After much scrubbing these are now completely naked. I'll try to take some after photos late - before will have to do for now. On a side note, does anyone have any C and C's at all? I'm very receptive to criticism and advice!!biggrin.png http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/Mobile%20Uploads/BBADAD30-C133-4037-92D3-1A850327BE9D_zpsgk5diua2.png

Has anyone got any advice on what I can do to improve my current offerings?  I'm determined to improve and would love some advice.  My next Terminator is almost finished and really just needs his head, hand and halberd doing.  Both of the shoulder cauldrons had some "blobby" moulding so the words aren't quite as defined.  http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/CADAA2D8-DBD5-4E9F-BD75-30A7CE537D3E_zpseatadyay.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/532846B2-9C12-4F9E-8612-E220FE2C0AFD_zpsh0gbi2rr.jpg

Honestly it's pretty solid work, man. You could possibly go a bit brighter on the silver highlights, but you're keeping everything nice and clean. Perhaps a little more depth in the red would be good too, again with some brighter highlights, but that would be my preference. You've done a great job on the blades so far! You're doing really well, just pump out some more mans for us to ogle!

Thanks Rojo.  I'll try to put some better depth/highlights on the red next time.

I managed to get some more progress done today.  I've finished the third Grey Knight, and have started work on the next two.  I've also finished putting together the Aegis autocannon and the Honoured Imperium set.  The statue took ages to get rid of all the gaps. As usual - C and C's are definitely welcome!

I've been away for the last week and a bit so progress has stalled.  However, I should get this chap finished today, as well as the crumbling Aquila.  The metal is done - I just need to finish the base.

Todays progress... I'm planning on picking the skulls out, and dry brushing the soil. Do you think I should pick the largish rocks out in grey or would it be too much? I'm planning on adding some static grass as well. Please C and C - I want to improve! smile.png http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/498D3F2A-8069-41E7-8997-9DFEBAC3A67B_zpsjgpoeigb.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/5240CC91-4100-4E76-B76E-7AFB171914A3_zpskp23kehk.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/3B02E54C-1C62-4785-A8B7-9B4412C00B51_zpsfbe56oqn.jpg

Sorry for the delay in any updates.  Its been manic at work recently.  Needless to say I need some pointers with how to improve.  I want to get better - be brutal!!

The quad gun is pretty much finished.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0214_zps891e0506.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0213_zps6aa31ef8.jpg

The Icarus lascannon is almost finished as well.  I think I might need some more orange on the lower half of the targeting lens, and the red needs some black ink on.http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0216_zps6ff05711.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0218_zpsaa93057c.jpg

I've also started work on the crashed lander.  I'm quite happy with the large and small wing, but the rest is still work in progress.  I am a bit concerned the wings don't look weathered enough.  I might try using a sponge to apply chips.  What do you all think?http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0219_zpsc753bc81.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0222_zps3b4d2afc.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0223_zpse79ac7ae.jpghttp://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m106/Seaspray99/IMG_0225_zps00de9474.jpg

Really solid start man. You're already starting out super clean and that's beyond a lot of people's abilities. What I think your next step forward would be is to add some depth. Edge highlighting is a good start. Playing more with either glazing or just airbrush highlights (which I see you've done some of, but I think you'll have to push the contrast to get credit for it) will give you some more punch and realism and move forward from flat colors.

One thing I think everyone that does Grey Knights struggles with is getting depth in that silver. I know I've struggled. My own go from black metal to gunmetal to steel so I get heavier shadows but it's still lacking a bit. Have you seen Garfy's at Tale of Painters? Do a search for those. He's got this great blue wash on everything that keeps it from being steel overload.

Sucks not getting feedback when you really want it. I'll try to check back in here to keep up the encouragement. Check out my blog or my WIP thread here and we can push each other. Good luck!

I've struggled to do silver well and can second the tale of painters for painting especially G-man. He's a regular on the swchq forum as well and knocks out better more indepth step by step painting instructions than I've come across anywhere else.

Only critique I've got is on the pipes/cables on the quad gun and TDA bases. While the red works in the grey knight weapons it doesn't float my boat on the gun or base. IMO a much dirtier brown/red would look better or really dirty yellow or metallic would look better. Just looks too clean on the base and quad gun.

Spot on with the TDA's weaponry though. I'd also like to say well done on the little blue screen as it looks really good.

Thanks for the feedback guys - I really appreciate it.  I was starting to get a bit discouraged! I'll check out the Tale of Painters this evening.  I'll definitely have a browse of your thread/blog as well.

I think you're right SW1.  I will probably redo them a darker shade of red.  If I was a better painter I would probably try to do hazard stripes on them.  Once again - thank you for the feedback!
