Just caught up on this thread. I love a bit of true scaling, and a bit of Deathwatching, so naturally this is ticking some big boxes for me, I started a similar project a while back, but nowhere near as advanced as this. Excelent stuff. Edited by Macloren

Hey all, thanks for the comments and compliments - they are all hugely appreciated, particularly coming from awesome hobbyists.

Bits and Kits have recently run a 33% off promotion on Deathwatch: Overkill. As a result, I've bought five more Salamander Terminators to harvest the pads. I've had spotty service from them in the past (much prefer Bitzbox) but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the bits actually arrive as promised.

It does mean I'm going to have ten Salamander terminators lying around, if anybody wants them...!

My current plans are to outfit my White Consuls Apothecary and Sword Bearers Champion with the new pads, which should bring them into the "almost ready for paint" stage. I then need to work out decent arms for my Black Templar and Iron Talon. My Crimson Fist is the least complete at the moment because he needs some serious work on his legs and on his chest.

My plan for the squad is to create 11 models - the Librarian and ten others.

Currently I'm at 10:

- Blackshield Librarian

- Lamenter

- Scythe of the Emperor

- Space Wolf

- Sword Bearer

- Crimson Fist

- White Consul

- Iron Talon

- Black Templar

- Marine made from the Betrayal at Calth Praetor

I have had thoughts about making a Techmarine figure - I had tentatively chosen the Sons of Orar (as there are Ultramarine bits that I can repurpose). I read that the Sons conducted xenocidal campaigns against the Eldar, particularly the Siege of Alaitoc. I liked the idea of a somewhat Xenophilious Techmarine (perhaps why he was dispatched from his Chapter) with a fascination for the Eldar and their technology. I liked the idea of a Techmarine with some Eldar trinkets on his armour. Could be an intriguing angle!

If you want a tech-orientated Ultramarines successor for your Techie try the Praetors of Orpheus, they're know for their worryingly close ties to the Mechanicum and heavy use of bionics. They even have relics related to this called Orphean Keys, a specialised combi-tool that can serve as both Auspex & mutli-key.

One of my biggest issues with my models is my dissatisfaction. I'll occasionally rip apart models and rebuild them - and this post shows the fruits of some of that. Sometimes it can be a good thing, and sometimes it can be frustrating.

My Lamenter - in many ways my favourite figure and the standard bearer for this project - has had a slight overhaul. He has a Deathwatch bolter and I've added decoration to his shin. The blood drop is from the leg of the Librarian from the Overkill boxed set. I've also replaced his helmet with one that has an aquila on the brow.

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/Swolf27mar_zps2tdyftm3.jpg

The Space Wolf has had the bolt pistol added from Chaplain Cassius. I like that it has a sight which speaks to the idea that he works as a scout, ahead of the rest of the squad.

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/consul27mar_zpszqgr3ne2.jpg

The White Consul apothecary has had a Deathwatch shoulder pad added, along with some minor tidying. The backpack light looked funny, so I've removed it - but I'm not sure whether it needs something in its place. I'm open to opinions there.

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/sbearer27mar_zps8kxgyog1.jpg

The Sword Bearer Champion has had a new shield arm (to allow the Deathwatch bolt pistol to sit properly in his hand) and a new backpack decoration from Chaplain Cassius. I am keen to find something that'd work well for his chest. I've also managed to find another Black Reach sword so I can replace his sword with an unsnapped one.

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/templar27mar_zpsudv1wett.jpg

This is perhaps the most radically different of models - the Templar that has been floating around for the entire span of this project has found himself a new weapon. He's also found a new belt buckle as well. He has quite a nice weight in his pose that works well in person. The backpack he has at the moment is the one from the multi-melta, but I might replace it.

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/kill-team27mar_zpsfksbxg67.jpg

Here you can see the Kill-Team's 'confirmed' members. I'm up to seven of my eleven, which leaves four to go.

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/new27mar_zpsujtubpmr.jpg

This picture shows the half-finished models I've been working on that could (potentially) join the Kill-Team. On the left, a White Scar member. (Perhaps this could work as a successor) with the sabre from the White Scars biker in Overkill. Then there's the Crimson Fist, who is perhaps the most complete. I like the raised leg, but he needs some work doing to the hips, and a resculpted chest. There's the Iron Talon (I've replaced the head, but I'm struggling a little with the pose due to the slight stiffness in his body. The Betrayal at Calth Praetor has a bit of a twist in the body so that posing has proven problematic. I've then got the Forgeworld Praetor, who I think has potential as a loyalist Marine.

Luna - I have just found your Iron Hands thread. Rather than necromancing your project, I have to say that you've got some awesome figures there. I haven't got a plan for an Iron Hands model. Given that I only intended to have 11(ish) models for this project, and that I wanted to avoid the first founding as much as possible, it's made it tricky. I do like the Sons of Medusa and (particularly, due to the work of Candleshoes and SCC) the Brazen Claws.

However, while I don't have plans for an Iron Hand at the moment, I have just bought an Iron Hands Iron Father model from eBay. I've mentioned for a while that I have plans for a Techmarine in my kill-team, so once I have it in my possession I will look to see how I can convert it. I intend to saw the torso from the legs and then see what posing I can get.

Thanks for the compliment man! I love that model, one of my favorites from forgeworld, and cutting it up proved to be a fun challenge that was immensely worth it in the end. Good luck, I'm sure you will work wonders with him!

It seems to me that you could kill two xenos with one stone here. Adapt Apologist's truescale method (= the careful removal of sections of the Grey Knight Terminator back torso, which in this case means the "hood" of the termi suit) to this model and you'd have an amazing truescale techmarine with the quintessential Techmarine front torso intact. You could sand off or fill in the Iron Hands symbol on his torso and replace it with the Mechanicus symbol or whatever takes your fancy.

I've just reread through everything here, really interesting to see how the models have evolved, and how much work you are putting into them. I'm sitting on my own project, trying to decide if I should continue with true scaling or return to using the normal scale, reading back through your work has given me lots of food for thought, and belays some of my concerns about creating dynamic looking models. I'll be interested to see what you decide to do with the Iron Father model

That iron father will make a great Techmarine, looking at him.

What is your objective for the kill team? Do you intend to game with them at all? They would be pretty Bonza in an I28 xenosmash setting! :-)

I am absolutely loving the 7 completed models, and I feel bad for saying this, but please stop tinkering with them.

I find that if I keep a model long enough without paint I will continually take it to bits rebuild it over and over and it never gets finished much to my frustration.

The Deathwatch Overkill bits look divine on these models, but I think they are deserving of paint.

They are at the point of perfection, build-wise.

Some work thus far on the Techmarine:

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/WP_20160401_13_07_26_Pro_zpsxxhnyzfm.jpg

Bear in mind thus far that this is heavily WIP and, in fact, has no GS.

Thus far he is made up of the Iron Father's legs, a Tartaros waist, a gorgon torso and a finecast Techmarine head. He looks a little narrow-waisted, but I've held him up to my other Marines and he scales relatively well. Once he's appropriately spaced and glued, he should be alright. Plus, the arms and whatever pouches he has at his waist should help. You can see here that I chopped out his back foot - I had planned to add a foot, but it didn't work out. I am now looking at this Anvil Industry leg set. Some careful work will need to be done to make sure it all matches up.

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/WP_20160401_13_07_35_Pro_zps6mkegopw.jpg

My planned backpack - the Mk III from the Overkill Iron Hand and a servo-arm from the plastic techmarine.

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/WP_20160401_13_07_56_Pro_zps7lwb60rt.jpg

Some work on the proposed power axe. The bionic leg is there because I've been fiddling with the possibility of using it to make a bionic arm.

Heed the story of Humpty-Dumpty; I got a little overzealous with my Iron Father conversion and managed to saw apart the legs - only to be utterly unable to put them back together again in any useful way. So that's £13 down the drain, and I'll have to order another from eBay when I get the chance. I at least have a head and torso arrangement that I'm happy with - I just need to sort the backpack, arms and legs.

In the meantime, I've been chatting with a friend of mine now that the Deathwatch are starting to get to a stage where they could see paint. Often people complain about the Deathwatch being a "rainbow squad" - a dazzling array of colours on display. Somehow, however, I've managed to avoid that; of the seven that I've gotten near-complete, I have:

Blackshield Librarian - Black

Lamenter - White and Black

Scythe of the Emperor - Black (with Yellow)

White Consul - White (with Blue)

Black Templar - White (with Black)

Space Wolf - Grey

Sword Bearer - Red

So, most of my squad seem to use either white or black as their main Chapter heraldry! This holds true for my next-most complete Marine, the Son of Orar. It did lead me on a search for other Chapters (an interesting diagram (here... which has of course led to me considering the possibility of creating two Kill-Teams of 10, overseen by my Librarian, Tancrede.

Last week was my birthday, and I received a copy of the compilation book Deathwatch: Ignition, which held some interesting tidbits - heavy references to the Jericho Reach and the Deathwatch RPG setting, the inclusion of Watch-Captains, Blackshields and the like which I think all are useful for when GW releases plastic Deathwatch.

I've collected a few ideas for the new members - at the moment, I've considered the Guardians of the Covenant, Libators, Marines Exemplar, Red Hunters and Void Sharks as members. (On an aesthetic note, this would add Silver and Red, Yellow, Red, and Grey to the team. Still no blue, green or orange!) Some suggestions would be welcomed.

I also have bought a Stormwolf and a Stormraven (due soon) so that I can begin constructing a transport for the team. I found this model on the internet (not sure who it belongs to...)

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/gladius_zpsb04mlysg.png

At the moment, my thoughts revolve around emulating this, in part. I know that the Stormwolf can have a turret on the top, and I don't know whether I should include that (though not with the helfrost cannon, but with something suitably Imperial like assault cannons? It looks as though the razorback mount fits there, so I could perhaps use the assault cannons from the Land Raider Crusader, or a Whirlwind missile pod?). I have the Inquisitorial doors from Forgeworld to go on the side of the thing, too. Any feedback about which components from the Stormwolf and the Stormraven I should use would be much appreciated.

Hope you are all well,

Mol .

Looks like a cool conversion that is inspiring you.

If you follow through with this I wouls suggest replacing te 2 lascanons with either Heavy Bolters,  multi melta or missiles.

Simply because those are the nose mounted weapons on a storm Raven.

Mount the twin plaqsma, Lascannonm or assault cannon in the turret, ad again they were mounted that way for the Storm Raven.

Side mounts could be for the hurricane bolters :)

Its a pity you cant stick a massive melta cannon in the Nose intake up front, drop the other guns and use it as a mini Caestus Assault Ram

I have thought about sawing the intake in half and widening it to include the nose-mounted multi-meltas from the stormraven for much the same reason you've said - to make it like an assault ram. I'm not bothered about it fitting any sort of codex entry, as these guys aren't going to be used for 40k.

Once I have the sprues in hand I'll be able to work out what I can do with them - and it looks as though I'll be able to create some sort of crashed vehicle which could work as an objective for a scenario!

Esteemed Commissar,

Regarding the selection of new recruits to your Deathwatch Strikeforce I would like to note here my recommendation for three particular Battle-Brothers who have excelled both in the field and in training exercises, I hereby submit them for your approval;

1. Brother ][REDACTED][ of the Angels of Iron. [Open File: Y/N?]

2. Brother ][REDACTED][ of the Imperial Stars. [Open File: Y/N?]

3. Brother ][REDACTED][ of the Warmongers. [Open File: Y/N?]

Should you require anything further please do not hesitate to contact me,

S.R.

The servo arm you're using for your techmarine what model is it from. I've been searching but can't seem to find a plastic techmarine

The Leman Russ + Enginseer kit...

+ Edit : That's my assumption anyway, since it's the only plastic servoarm I know of...

+ + Edit : Ahh, yeah, it is... The plastic techmarine leg threw me off for a moment, until I realized (read) it was the DW:Overkill IronHand's...

Ah yes completely forgot about that. Cheers

I reckon two 10 man squads led by your Librarian is a fine plan. Specially if Ignition is giving you lots of extra ideas and background to work from. In terms of the flyer conversion, it looks like a pretty simple case of taking the main body of the Stormfang and adding the jets and wings from the Stormraven rather than the 'Fang equivalent. Personally I'd maybe forgoe the top turret as it looks kinda tacked on to my eyes.

Hello all,

Today I took advantage of the bank holiday to play my first game of Deathwatch Overkill, using my Marines and Orks, as part of my plans to run a Deathwatch campaign.

Firstly, we played Mission 1: Killstorm: I was tasked with taking four Marines against the Orks, and killing 25.

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/DW11_zpsdxt9uiwb.png

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/DW12_zpsgdgxfawk.png

I managed to complete this in relatively short order, but it allowed us both to get a handle on the rules and to have an understanding of how to play. With Mission 1 under our belt, we attempted Mission 2: Vox Noctis. Here, six Deathwatch marines were tasked with shutting down a vox relay before the Orks could call in reinforcements.

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/DW13_zps12xics3p.png

http://i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/INQ28/DW14_zps1qga7s80.png

This showed some of the extra complexities of the game, allowing the Ork player to play gambits and swamp the Marines with Ork bodies. The Orks were able to kill my Apothecary, before downing the Sword Bearer Champion and my Heavy Flamer Marine.

What does this mean for the topic? Well, my Marines were, I felt, limited by only being Speed . In the Overkill game there are two assault marines (who have Speed 3) and, whilst I'm not planning on building a Marine on a bike, I would like to have that extra flexibility. As a result, I'm keen to start thinking about the added flexibility afforded by Assault Marines.
