Thanks Gorgoff you're very kind.  I'm making progress, it's just slow.  I can only recommend the Zone Mortalis tiles.  They are not only beautiful, but so far I've had a blast playing on them.  Honestly I think I like it better than a regular 40k/30k board.  If you have any inclination towards buying a ZM board, I would heartily recommend that you do.  You will not be disappointed, though you may want to kick me very hard for the amount of painting you have to do.  :P

Awesome Altis!  Are you planning to make bases as well?  Truth be told, it's been a huge pain in the butt so far.  Keep your resin cast of the floor as thin as possible!  Otherwise you are cutting up a thick piece.  It's brittle, tough, and getting to the center pieces will make you cry.

Lastly, I have a question for anyone who has an opinion on the matter: I currently made preparations for 12 unique 25mm bases for my Legionaries.  I started to consider 32mm bases, since they are the new hotness, and Astartes might fit a little better on them.  Any suggestions or thoughts?

Bases and scenery. I've also got Calas Typhon on order specifically for his base, that and the Theta board I plan on making a crumbling jetty/docks/sump bottom for necro/warhammer.

Personally I'd get some 32mm in as well. I don't know what everyone else plans, but my rank and file will be 25mm, 32mm will be for Characters/sarges/anyone I think deserves it.

I appreciate the advice, I'm not sure how I plan on making the bases yet, hence me thinking I'm very lucky you've gone there first! any pics on how  you achieve it would be great thanks ;)

Good idea for the bases. My immediate thought as a potential solution to the cutting problems was perhaps try a core drill? You can get them in various sizes. Obviously only works on the round bases but might be worth a look.

I definitely considered this, but didn't find any that were cheap enough that didn't also have a "guide" drill bit in the center.  Bases don't look so great with a hole in the middle. :P

Thanks for the inputs, guys!  I'm actually strongly considering 30mm or 32mm for all my regular Power Armoured Astartes.  I definitely prefer the look since the feet don't hang over the edge.  And since I'm making my own I can pretty much dictate the base size for my entire army.

There's only two problems that I foresee.  One would be future Heresy-era armies that don't use my Zone Mortalis bases.  I would have to either make new 30mm/32mm bases for them as well or change the base size (that would bother me).  The second is Alexis Polux.  If his game-sized inset base is 25mm, it might be silly to have my premier character on a smaller base than his compatriots.  Or I would have to give up his scenic base...

That looks awesome! How did you do that? Did you make a negative out of rubber and then made a whole tile to cut bases out of it? I have the same board and already thought about how I could mould some bases out of it.

That's exactly what I did. The mold you see in the picture is of the tile. I put in some resin to make a "copy" of the plain tile that I could then chop up to make the bases. My first time dealing with any sort of casting... Interesting so far.

I had the same idea as you a while ago and have already made the rubber mold of the ZM tile.  I poured just enough resin into the mold to make a very thin tile.  I plan on cutting the sizes I need from the thinner resin and gluing them to some plain bases of various size and shape.  That will give the beveled edge I need plus the exact copy of the ZM tiles for the tops.  I'll then make new molds of the completed bases to cast for my armies.

Yup that's precisely what I'm doing.  I'm about halfway done with the trimming and gluing now.  It's a large amount of rump-pain however.  I wish I had poured my copy much thinner.  Mine is about 5mm.

Kurama, I looked far and wide for bases to match my Zone Mortalis tiles. I couldn't find any that had the same "look" or even seemed close enough to make me happy. So instead of settling, here I am! Once this is over I will tell you if it has been worth it. :P

I poured my copy much thinner than 5mm, basically it was just enough resin to capture all of the tile's details evenly without any gaps.  The resin is actually so thin that it would bend and rip if I picked up one side of it and folded it over itself.  I'll get a measurement with a micrometer later today for you if you like.

I also used a much more flexible and durable resin than the Alumalite you used for yours.  I hate the Alumalite brand resin with a passion and wouldn't use it for any of my projects ever again.

Anyone know where I can get smooth on in the UK without it costing as much as a forgeworld model?

Did you try checking the distributor locator on Smooth-On's website? They list http://www.benam.co.uk/ as a distributor in the UK with two different locations. Mold making and resin casting aren't exactly cheap aspects of the hobby, especially if you are just starting out and want to produce good quality results. It is often more cost effective to simply buy the FW kits. Feel free to pm me if you have more questions, I'm happy to share my knowledge and advice anytime.

Well you better cast some for sale because I will be interested msn-wink.gif

Seconded.

Haha thanks guys, I appreciate the interest. I doubt that my casting will be up to a sale-quality. There are definitely some holes and bubbles. Not to mention that I don't think I'd have a legal (or moral) leg to stand on to re-sell them. I will post some pics once I have actual casted bases to show.

I have reached a decision on base size, however. For all 30k power armour, I'll be using 30mm bases. They are just large enough to actually fit a Space Marine, while not being so big to be awkward or encroach on the Terminator size 40mm. And since I'm casting my own, I can choose with impunity!

I ordered a large batch of 30mm beveled edge bases from eBay, casted another (much thinner) sheet of material, and once they arrive I'll be prepping my 30mm Zone Mortalis bases.
