Valerian
Members of the Rout, As the days of our glorious 5e codex draw to a close, I'd like to start this thread to provide an opportunity for everyone to share with the others what their "go-to" unit(s) have been over the past 6 years. What non-Troops unit did you always include in your army lists, and take with you to battle? Who did you consider to be your 'old reliable'? I specify non-Troops, as providing Grey Hunters is too easy, and too obvious for nearly every one of us. Also, feel free to differentiate between the 5e era and the 6e/7e era, as changes to the basic rulesets may have caused a significant change in which units were most effective for you. I'm looking forward to your input. Valerian Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294587-go-to-units/ Share on other sites
Arraken
3rd Edition was wolf scouts with a meltagun. 5th edition was Thunderwolves, usually with two Stormshields. People spent so much time worrying about them they didn't have notice the advancing Grey Hunters. Also I did love a drop pod with Wolfguard Terminators and a Wolf Lord. Khine
It's an odd pair for me, but they worked wonders.Swiftclaws and longfangs. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294587-go-to-units/#findComment-3764320 Share on other sites
Sturm Moonwolf
3rd Wolf Scouts and a Rune Priest with a Storm shield. 5th+ Hagar the Horrible's Long Fang pack with missiles, and Lone Wolf McQuade. CatSmasher
I would like to nominate the vindicator, it is most often my mvp. I once played a game against some nurgle marines and was frustrated with the T5 profile. It was a big hole in my army, no S10. It can shoot anything and do a number. I killed 3 Kans in one shot the other day. It also takes the pressure off my LFangs Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294587-go-to-units/#findComment-3764343 Share on other sites
Rune_Priest_Rhapsody
Wolf Guard in Terminator Armor. Lots of them. Usually in drop pods. And Thunder Wolf Cavalry. Like Arraken mentioned, such a good distraction pack!! And if and when they get there, sooo many attacks!! Rune Priest Jbickb
My long fangs served me very well especially back in 6th when divination rune priests were able to drop prescience at will. I do miss re rolling all those missiles and Las cannons Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294587-go-to-units/#findComment-3764356 Share on other sites

Orphus
My one Wolf Guard who got promoted to Wolf Lord after realizing I lacked a HQ from the battle box. He didn't have a name so was just dubbed "Claws". Because he was in a drop pod he rarely lived until the end of the battle due to suicidal assults although with Saga of the Warrior Born he usually took something down with him. There was also the Power Sword equipped Grey Hunter who became a Rune Priest. I never had much success ever casting Psyker spells though. To be honest I didn't play a huge amount of games in 6th edition, I guess I expected the book to last longer. :( Going on a holiday of sorts soon so I'll factor the new codex into that. Interesting to see what is new. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294587-go-to-units/#findComment-3764366 Share on other sites
Leif Bearclaw
Tanks, Vindicators and Predator, normally a Tri-las. Those big guns saved my bacon many, many times. Rift Blade
TWC & LF's of course. The week I picked up the 5th Ed codex & read Thunder Wolves entry I was hooked. Spent the next week checking local toy stores & modeling supply places for toy wolves to convert. Showed up a local tournament the week after with a unit of 3 long before any models were actually out & they been part of my army at 1500 pts or more ever since. Strangely enough, one other "unit" I hardly ever leave the Fang without lately is a Bastion with quad gun. MeatGrinder
Long fangs and Rune Priests have pretty much stayed in every single list Ive made. I think my heavy bolter long fang squad (a recent aquisition) will stay from now on, I really enjoy what they do and how much firepower they put out. Kassill
Wolf Priest with Saga of the Hunter has been my champion hero more times than I can remember. Whenever he shows up, it's to the chorus of my opponents going "ugh, the white wolf headed guy..." I'm truly going to miss Saga's for points. Frater Cornelius
Thunderwolves and Thunderlords. They were the most heroic and badass units on this side of Terra and I do hope to be using them with the new codex... who am I kidding, I will of cause :D And there's my Lone Wolves. One of them went to such lengths as to kill a LRC, the CCS and HQ inside while still surviving with 1 wound. Jarl Kjaran Coldheart
My trio of Vindicator tanks. They advanced along my Rhinos either being covered by them, or being cover FOR them, and then dropped the pain when the Rhino's stopped to unleash the goods. They have been alot of fun. DanPesci
Lone Wolf Tostig - TDA, CF, SS, 1 wolf (dont kill his wolf, it just makes him angry). THis guy for me took so many heads....he loved to rip land raiders apart for fun, absolutely tore through squads of stinking plague marines, and in one game took down 2 deathwing squads, after challenging and wiping the floor with belial. He even gives a good speech :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3f32sHBAU8 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294587-go-to-units/#findComment-3765386 Share on other sites
Konnavaer
My wolf priest Egil Thunderfist with his Saga of the Hunter, outflanking with a pack of Grey Hunters with double plasma never failed me in any of the games I took him and his pack, even stock with just an added plasma pistol to his gear he was responsible for destroying or routing many times his own cost in xenos and their machines of war, Russ (and the new 'dex) willing he will continue his saga as we march forwards towards the wolf time... Reede
My Heavy Bolter Longfangs usually rock stuff for me. Even when facing Space Marine armies, hitting and wounding on 3's can usually drop quite a few people just under the sheer weight of necessary saves. However, when you take them against non-Space Marine things... oh my the carnage. Beyond him, I really try and include my Space Wolves Contemptor Dreadnought with DCCW, Chainfist, dual heavy flamers, and Saga of the Iron God. Allows him to insanely rock in the can-opener role (especially in a Lucius) but if he has to go up against some infantry (or Allfather help them, a mob army) he's more than competent. Inquisitor Kravin
Logan Grimnar, Great Wolf - well it is a Logan Wing army! Lone Wolves - they are so fluffy and make an entertaining speed bump. The changes to Rage in 6th slightly undermined them. The original use was look for a unit like Death Company or Khorne Berserkers and run out to a position where they have to charge. Die a glorious death and then let the Long Fangs and Grey Hunters with plasma weapons mark the passing of the Lone Wolf. Fire Wolf
Wolf Lord on TWC with hammer...either running solo or with a TWC retinue. His latest achievements from last Thursday night include: Taking the brunt of an IG's gunline and shrugging it off with only one wound to speak of before charging Pask's tank retinue and walking away from flaming wreckage while the rest of his Great Company and Aett Guard deep strike or outflank all around him. I'm fairly certain Amon Amarth was playing in the background.. Neuroticus
I'm fairly certain Amon Amarth was playing in the background.. All the better. We're partial to Bathory's track "total destruction" at the start of a match, or perhaps a good dose of Dark Throne. My son loves his Long Fangs pack. Now that I'm starting Wolves as my 4th 40K / WFB army I am eager to see the high capacity transport in action. dragon950
In the old 3rd edition rules my squad of long fangs with heavy bolters and plasma with a rune priest(that only had one crappy power) was rarely wiped off the board. This squad was a bastion that would not die to massed shooting or being charge. Also all wolfguard with necklaces that had them hit on 3+ was amusing to my marine opponents. Big props to the Ven. Dread. that wiped out half of my opponents nurgle army in most games. 5th edition was my PA wolfguard squad with frost blades, thunder hammers, and storm shields led by Ragnar in a Land Raider. Not great against shooting armies, but everything else it massacred them. Small apoc. game it turned rolled through a 3rd of the table including abaddon, 2 daemon princes, chaos terminators, and a greater daemon of nurgle.
