In previous editions it was plasma toting long fangs and rune priests.

Though once I'd worked out I could have my wolf priest with his plasma pistol, dual plasma pistol wg and plasma'd out grey hunters popping up somewhere annoying. They also made regular outings.

This edition I've painted a few SW's, but just can't get back into 40k. I was hoping the new codex would give me a kick start but it's likely I'll go 30k instead. :(

My Star unit that was always included would have to be my saga of the bear th/ss wolf lord, and his attachment of wolfguard with combi meltas. The Wolf lord currently has 18 nid monstrous creatures, 2 riptides and Draigo to his name.

Last game him and his 5 wolfguard tanked 2 full turns of firepower from the nid player before falling. Over 100 str 6 shots!

Wolf Priest with Saga of the Hunter.  Infiltrating Grey Hunter squad supported by TWC was scary.  And then when 6th ed rolled out, Wolf Priest with Saga of the Hunter and a Wolfguard Terminator squad with a Crusader as a dedicated transport.  That is a scary squad rolling in on a flank with preferred enemy.  Nonetheless, Baulden Jawbreaker has served me well.

Like others mentioned, I got a lot of mileage out of Thunderwolf Cavalry. Such a good unit. They were great distractions for other units and always let me get my hunters, vindicators, and landspeeders in position. My true MVP was my Thunderlord. I'd stick him with my cavalry and despite them always being fire magnets, the Lord gave them the staying power to live long enough to cause some mayhem in assault.

I was drawn to TWC right away. Back in 3rd edition I greatly utilized Bloodclaw Bikers and a Biker Lord as a fast moving, high toughness assault squad. Jumping into Thunderwolves who did all those things better was pretty natural transition. My great company was always painted Deathwolf colours, so I am excited to see what they do with Harald now that he's an official special character.

In 3rd the wolves seemed always outnumbered and not very shooty. In 5th I wanted shooty. My go to's. Long fang packs and Land speeder tornado squadrons ans typhoon squadrons. Wolf guard with combi plasma, both in power armour and TDA

Lastly. The Rune priest. I didn't use more then two in a list but they were my Go to HQ. Not as strong as say a wolf Lord but they worked very well with my army and my play style.

my mvp has to be my long fangs with missile launchers, they are the most versatile unit in the game, and in their best effort used frag missiles to take out some marines who were sitting on the roof level of a bunker, they caused 38 hits, of which 29 wounded. said unit was wiped from the mat.

let that be a lesson, power armour does't mean bunching up is a good idea, especially when a small blast can fit 6-7 models underneath

Best HQ is Wolf Lord on thunderwolf with storm shield and Frost blade, saga of the bear and runic armour.

either that or 2 dirt cheap 100 point rune priest with no upgrades
