Ultramarines standards.

Greetings brothers,

I'm currently (still, one year onwards) working on my 3rd company Command squad, and I'm at a loss for the standard. The main banner is far beyond my abilities to replicate, but so far my efforts to make something decent are quite lacklustre. In my force I've got some Grey Knight Paladins and Sanguinary Guard, both with their banners, but as my Ultramarines are my main detachment, I don't want them to be the force with the awful banner.

All I ask then, is if anybody has any ideas, pictures, art work etc to help come up with an idea. I was at one point looking to make a Standard of the Emperor Ascendant, but I've accepted that that is way beyond me.

Here's the current, very WiP, incarnation of what I've got:http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx181/Sambuuca/Mobile%20Uploads/Crusade%20WiP/20140729_175150_zpskx1jvmt_edit_1407057096321_zpswth8kcrq.jpg

Cheers in advance guys.

The Ultramarines' standards?

High. Very high. They're the Imperium's best after all.

EDIT: More seriously, the banner you've got there looks good. Is it all freehand or do I spy some decals on there? Also, I think I have some UM banner examples somewhere, so if you're interested in those, I could send them to you.

I cannot draw to save my life. I have found that in order to make anything look half the way I want it to I have to "grid" the area.

Draw a grid on the original and on the banner and then rather than attempting to draw the entire picture, only draw each little square. the corrections are FAR easier and the overall effect actually comes out looking closer to what you want it too.

Try it and maybe it will work for you too.

Definitely +1 to 200Plus' suggestion!

I hate freehand, but I've found doing a few practice runs on a piece of A4 first always helps me as well.   I also tend to paint the shape of any 'fiddly' bits from the outside inwards, if that makes sense?  So for example if painting a green wreath on a black background, I'd block in the rough shape in green, but then paint inwards with the black to create a more defined shape.  Works for me anyway!

Having said that, your banner looks pretty awesome already to me! :)

Thank you all for your help, I've dug out an old, unused codex and took the banner out of there. Still needs work, lots of it, but it's shaping up nicely.

Thank you all again.

Looking good smile.png.

I did the 3rd Company Standard Bearer for last years LPC. I know it's a bit late and you've already got a solution, but I did a bit of WIP with some details of the process I went through. I'll link it here in case there's something useful for you for doing future banners.

I found the trick was to plan it all out with a rough "sketch" on the banner before applying any colour of detail. I'm not sure if I mention it in the WIP, but I remember drawing a cross over the banner before I started anything else to split the banner to show the centre both vertically and horizontally, which then acted as a guide to position the various elements. I also remember there was a lot of painting out a white outline then going back and painting over it in black and starting again. That first stage is the key part, don't rush it and take your time getting everything the right shape, position and size. It's a similar idea to 200Plus' grid, just with a less detailed grid. I then slowly built up the detail one area at a time. Just be patient and work slowly with it, going back to fix any mistakes once an area is finished.
