We all have secrets - My first army

I was hunting around for some pics and remembered these. I've always been a fluff bunny and this army was built around some short story bits I did quite awhile back...like early 3rd edition. The army wasn't very competitive as I just built units that I thought were cool and there weren't any vehicles, yet I was intrigued with the concept.

Anyway, the idea behind the army was of an Alpha Legion cell that had gone off and done some gene enhancing experimentation with reptilian genes in an effort to produce troopers with superior infiltration skills. Back then, you could choose to infiltrate your entire army and I just became enamored with the concept. Also, I liked the idea of the AL wearing other livery in order to cause confusion in the opponents' ranks, much like that one incident on Eskardor.

Also, sometimes the gene splicing didn't work out so well, hence my first conversion, which was my HQ.

Then some infiltrators

And finally the idea that really got me jazzed about doing something weird

My new HQ Mk 2, who not only was in termie armor, but had twin lightning claws and was bigger than anyone else's terminators. In fact the new plastic termies had not been released yet, but the rumors were that they'd be bigger than the metal jobs, so I scaled my snakes up so that they'd have a good chance being even larger.

And if that isn't embarrassing enough, here is the first 40K figure I ever painted. I even did a slight conversion because back then, there were no bits and carving up stuff that you had laying around was the only way to get something different.

Anyway, it just goes to show you that we all start at the beginning and that anyone can get better if you just keep after it.

Cheers,

These are awesome, you still have them?

Nope, sold everything to help finance my Tau army except for the HQ Mk. 2. I also did some Berzerkers to add a little craziness to the army, again all foot, so I'll have to post those as well.

For the Berzerkers, I wanted to develop a technique for red that was distinguishable as a real red, but wasn't so "smack you in the face" bright. To get the color I was looking for literally took 10 layers, working my way up from Bestial Brown through blends to a final coat of Blood Gore or whatever it was called. Nowadays I think the equivalent is challed Khorne Red. Anyway, I painted something like 8 guys and said, "Yeah, we're done".

Anyway, I'll find those and post them as well. They were kind of interesting.

@Kilofix: Nah bro, I only work for the Big E...at least on this forum. ;)

Crimson Gore (prefer Ruby Red personally ;) )

These are great. Shame you sold them to fund the blue skins. Loads of character there. Never too late to start them again you know :whistling:

Um Epidemus? Ezekyle Abbadon? Oh, I know, .... must be Erebus!

I like the thing in the first pic and the thing in the last pic - whatever they are! laugh.png

Tau on the tabletop can more embody the trickery and adaptability notable to the Alpha Legion than any Space Marine army (Horus Heresy Rules or 40k.)

I'm sort of struggling with how to paint my new chaos.

So this would be Tau codex version 1. I sold them eventually after the Eye of Terror campaign to fund my DIY chapter, so the  fish heads are gone as well, though they were a fun ride through 4th as I ran them all mechanized, with no broadsides or Kroot.

So below is my "Angry Red Men" exercise, which entailed a choppy squad and a shooter squad with the always entertaining Kai gun. So of course, this particular warband was led by a guy all in green. What can I say, I've liked torquing off Chaos for awhile now. :)

And now the crazy guys

So this was my Kai gun, which according to the fluff was driven by the emotions of the user. I think it was a daemonic weapon. Anyway, the idea was that the energy driving this was leaking out of the side of his head and making its way to the gun. As an idea, it sort of worked.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Angry%20Red%20Men/061706015.jpg

So from this side, he sort of looks "normal". It wasn't until you turned him around that you were supposed to see the crazy leaking out.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Angry%20Red%20Men/061706014.jpg

This was supposed to be my Khârn equivalent. I was pretty happy with how he turned out, which featured tiny wires emerging from his shoulders and burying themselves into his biceps.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Angry%20Red%20Men/061706011.jpg

So this guy was kind of interesting. I had sort of an idea for a striking pose, but couldn't really get there, so I ended up just chopping up bits and working them into paperclip armatures. He eventually ended up being made up of 51 pieces. I did keep him out of the whole batch.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d187/hkowabunga/Angry%20Red%20Men/061706020.jpg

So that's pretty much my foray into the lunacy you guys immerse yourself in :). I was amusing while it lasted.

Yeah, the FPS (Fuzzy Primer Syndrome) just killed me. I kept thinking, "Ok, I can fix this, lots of layers will fill all those pockets!"

Not even close. furious.gif

So it really turned into a "make the best of the cards you've been dealt" as I had more than passed the halfway point and since I was just wanting to learn about painting red, what I had was sufficient. But you are correct, I'd never consider these for anything but a learning exercise. I also learned how to do snowy mountain bases. :P

Would seem I'm not the only Templar with a secret temptation for Chaos. Currently working on a Khorne Defiler for Relics of war challenge, might lead to a full blown army.
