Value of the Apothecary

Probably the least played specialist Marine out there and as such, there isn't much out there as far as advice or tactics.

This thread is here to (hopefully) remedy that.

So share your experiences and successes!

I've not played this myself, but twenty-strong legionary squads with attached apothecaries are recommended so hard around here that even hipsters use them.

They are auto-include for me in HH. I don't know why people don't use them more in 40K for Space Marines.

The only codex with the ability to run them right is Blood Angels. And they are used somewhat often for them. Standard SpaceMareens can only take them as an upgrade in a command squad. I wish I could take one in a crusader squad...

Oh, Apothecary isn't an IC in the Space Marine Codex (I don't play Loyalist)? Bummer....

But new Space Wolf Priest is an IC and can take Healing Balms for equivalent FNP right?

Ive heard that they can give 6+ fnp, I have no idea if they can improve on it.

I believe WP are Chaplain & Apothecary combos, and they give slightly weaker versions of the respective specialist bonuses.

Biggest problem with them is they are only available in a Command squad, which is fixed at 5 models. They should be more flexible and independent specialists like 2nd edition but alas they're not.

Can get extra value out of the by attaching HQs. If you wanted to be silly you could attach two HQs and two standard Techmarines.

Red Scorpions CT are amazing, yes free upgrade from sarge.

I usually run 2 in my BA lists, they are well worth while and I normally use them for my impressively unlucky plasmagunners, who tend to shoot themselves in the foot and explode at least twice a game.

Yeah i've used the FW Shen rules a few time in the past and it's night and day tbh, i'd much prefer they were IC's and could be chosen outside the command squad.

shen is amazing and so worth his points, but alas he cannot take a bike :/ he works wonders for landraider or raven mounted death blobs but not for me... I still remember back in the day when i ran him with corboulo as a joke for a 2+ rerollable fnp (fw update gave him a 5+ rerolling 1s after 6th dropped) and any s8+ hits were shuffled to a biker master tongue.png

The gear options on them suck aka non existent. So not only do they exist in command squads alone but the opportunity cost for taking one is one less melta or plasma gun. In a 5 man squad one or two extra dice is a big difference not to be underestimated.

Frankly they need a rules treatment similar to tech marines. Outside of that use red scorpions or ally in BA if you want to use apothecary's.

BA priests are not normal apothecaries, their buffs only work on BA units. At 50 pts I find them over priced and never use them but that could certainly change with a better codex.

50 pts is the going rate for a tech marine. If they were ic's that didn't eat up a slot like tech marines and had some limited gear options 50 pts base is pretty reasonable. Although wishes and 25 cents gets you 25 cents.

I think GW has missed the boat on how to add to the marine codexes. We get new fliers or tanks or tank marines. An easy and obvious way to differentiate the codexes and expand on them would be to expand on the supporting cast of "ic's".

For BA it's mostly about the upgrade costs (25 pt jump pack, 35 pt bike! Compared to the reasonable prices SW now pay mellow.png ) and the fact that so many of our units are already overpriced. Adding an expensive 1W IC to squads just compounds that problem. Give that sanguinary priest a jump pack plus power weapon and you've just paid almost as much as a basic squad. At that point it's better to just buy an extra troop unit instead, or spend the points on offensive upgrades rather than having your dudes dying slightly slower.
