Vykryl
I've been working on my army for just over a year now. So far I have enjoyed assembly more than painting. My army and Wolf Lord have gone through several theoretical designs. Several attempts at painting were made and botched. Now I have a plan and a paint scheme I like. I have decided to base my Great Company on my favorite book, The Long Ships by Frans G Bengtsson. This gives me some design direction. My Wolf Lord will be themed around Red Orm the Far Traveled, a Danish viking who wields an Andalusian sword and keeps a large pack of Irish wolf hounds. This means I need another box of Thunderwolf Cavalry, and maybe the Thunderwolf Lord kit. Orm will ride a Thunderwolf, wielding a Frost Blade and Storm Shield and accompanied by 2 of his hounds. I finally have a Wolf Lord idea I like! Now to get the TWC models to make him and a retinue. I have three TWC all ready. Tried to paint one to night and botched it, into the dip tub with him. Orm's best friend, Toke Grey-Gullsson, will be squad leader for my TWC. It is his mount I fouled up. Toke received his base coat before I started on his mount. Pictures will appear after I am satisfied. His equipment will be the same as Orm's, both wear given rare swords as a reward in the Long Ships. Time for a picture! This is Rapp the One Eyed, shipmate from Orm's first voyage as a youngster. In the book, Rapp chooses to follow and becomes Orm's housecarl after their first voyage together. With his preferred weapon being an axe, he will wield a frost axe as he leads Orm's TDAWGs. Wasn't sure how to show he only has one eye under the helmet, so I blacked out the left lense. Here are three of Rapp's pack assembled. The other four members of this pack are waiting for me to magnetize their Wolf Claws. Pack Leaders for Grey Hunters A TDAWG with CML and Wolf Claw that is no longer allowed to escort Long Fangs. This model was intended to be my Wolf Lord, he now needs a new possition. With me now trying to limit bare heads in my army to TWC, Lone Wolves and priests, he may end up a Lone Wolf. After seeing my 2 completed models, does anyone have an idea for the color of his cape? That is enough for now. It is late and I have to get up for work in 5 hours. First a growler of Raven's Eye to the Wolf Brother that gave me the idea of using bolt metal as my base color. It is quick and easy for someone with limited time and skills, thank you. Dantay VI
For the pack leaders, you have in limbo. Can you remove the heads safely and change for faces or regular helms. You could use them as regular Grey Hunters or Blood Claws whoa re upgraded to carry a special melee weapon. If you superglued the heads in, you might be ale to pop them off. If you used plastic glue, it would require cutting. If Rapp is regular Wolf Guard and not a battle leader ten the Cyclone launcher could join his pack. As the 5th Wolf Guard he is allowed to carry a special weapon, and the cyclone is good for light infantry (Frag blast) or vehicles (krak). Whether you want to change out the storm bolter for another melee weapon and make a dedicated assault pack is up to you. Blacking out the eye is a good idea, as if he changes to another character in the future you can just paint his eye back in. You could also maybe ad a bit of background as to why he is one-eyed and refused an augmetic (bearing his scars proudly or some such reason) The terminator pack has a nice dynamic feel to it and a good mix of weapons for assault. The change in colour to the grip on the axe is good, maybe a touch darker and the black wash on the skull has worked pretty well too, Makes it stand out a bit more. The possible Lone Wolf looks good I like the head, it is the one I have used for my Erik Morkai and the Chainfist is nice too, looks like he'd use it to punch and chew through his target rather than the sawing motion associated with the standard chainfist. A quick thought looking at it and only if you have spare chainswords to experiment with, so you dont wreck his cool fist. What about shaving away the bolts on 2 chainswords so they go flush, side-byside. Positioned in the centre of the back of the fist, so it is a double wide version of a chainfist/sword/hand. As for colour of the cape. I would say it would depend on the colour of the furs. Maybe not red because if you stick to your colour scheme, the red pads would be overwhelmed. Is there a lone wolf like character in the bok and does it describe him in any way, such as colour of heraldry etc?? Might give you a helping hand there. If not maybe a black cloak with a red company symbol on the back, with a light gry, almost white fur?? Like an inverse version of the right shoulder pad? Vykryl
I've got one pack leader finished. Not sure how often I will use the model, or even which pack he will run with. He went up 11 points with the new codex. I think I got the primer can too close when I sprayed him. Almost finished this one. Thinking he will be a Lone Wolf with chainfist and wolf claw, comes in at 80 points. Have also considered running him as Company Champion with a Wolf Lord profile at 175, mostly for the 4++. That's a lot of points to get +1 to his invulnerable, he would also get an extra wound and double attacks. As a WGBL he would be 120, probably not worth it for +1 attack. Need to redo the Wolf Claw and paint the belt holding on the pelt a brown color. I plan to try making the emblem slides. The first will go on my troops. The more ornate one should look good on vehicles and walkers. Vykryl
I didn't get much time to paint tonight, so this one is just started. My question is, is the red shield too much red? If so what other color should it be, black or metal or another color? Any thoughts are appreciated. Dantay, I tried a couple different colors before settling on red for the cloak. I think the pelt makes a good break between the two red objects. I'm not remembering many good Lone Wolf characters from the book, need to get it back and read it again for crazy secondary characters. My copy is currently in the hands of my pastor, we like to share books and talk history. I need to find a way to paint Wolf Claws that I like, not satisfied with how this claw turned out. Edit: maybe some gold embroidery on the cloak hem would help it? Vykryl
Finally got a little time to finish this one. He just got a nuln oil wash before the pic and is still wet. Its 2 hours past bed time, so I don't have time for him to dry tonight. Vykryl
Hammernator got a second wash on shield to dull it down a bit. Finished two of his pack mated equipped with wolf claws. Still need to finish and paint their assault cannon buddy and get a second hammernator for the pack. Made a blue wash for their claws, didn't show well in this pic though. Vykryl
I'm not getting time to paint this week. Been busy getting the kid ready for school starting and my friend and his fiance's bachelor/ette parties. We are spending a 4 day weekend at Lake Tahoe. Don't think I'll have time to paint while there. So my lone accomplishment this week was to put a shield arm together and magnetize it over two nights. He isn't even primed, but here is a preview of my TDA assault oriented pack. Lone Wolf Ivar Broad-Hug will fill in until I get a second hammernator. Vykryl
It's been a bit since I updated this one. Didn't realize how long until looking at my pic album. Wolf Priest Styrkar My only painted Grey Hunter Pack One more hammernator and this TDAWG pack is complete. For some reason the AsCan TDAWG came out shiny after his nuln oil wash One complete TDAWG pack Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/295280-vykryls-great-company-wip/#findComment-3927612 Share on other sites
Vykryl
Edit: the models I had pictured here have changed so updating them. My Thunderwolves with Scout riders. I am looking for something to use for pauldrons on these guys but have been distracted by ETL. This is 2 of the 3, third one also has an axe. The 3 will be equipped with ccw and storm shield each. Vykryl
Brother Willibald went a slightly different direction. I asked for a chapter for him in the Libre and was given Guardians of the Covenant as a suggestion. Nice that they use the color scheme I'm already using :) Being a Dark Angels successor can help explain the early tension between Chaplain Willibald and Wolf Lord Orm Edit: a roughly painted Brother Willibald. Dim conditions and lack of sleep are not conducive to well painted models. Neither is my patience or skill level for that matter ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/295280-vykryls-great-company-wip/#findComment-4002039 Share on other sites
Vykryl
Units I'm working on for ETL Some almost completed Sniper Scouts. Missile boy has a magnet in his torso, if I can ever figure out the heavy bolter I will make it so the 2 are interchangeable. Some Skyclaws I'm stumbling through. A Wolf Guard Battle or Pack Leader to accompany the Skyclaws. This model isn't part of my ETL vow. Not sure what to do with him exactly. This Rune Priest is the oldest member of my GC that is not a Dreadnought. Arms poses are limited and I'm not sure about the right hand. Does the signal horn look ok or should he hold something else? I've also thought of turning the horn around so it looks like he's having an ale while those younger than he take care of business. Any suggestions for the Rune Priest?
