Creation of a Chaplain - October 2015 reboot

I struggled when kitbashing my chaplain and like you everything i seemed to do i felt was a bit over the top, ended up just going the simple route of just using a cut down DA power maul and one of the many, many banner tops sitting in my bitz box doing nothing.

Maybe just go with something similar?

I didn't think the crozius looked too oversized for 40k, but I respect you sticking to your feelings about it enough to drop it.

What Chapter is this guy for? That might help in coming up with an idea for a new crozius.

Whoa totally never clicked in my brain till now that a Black Metal face paint scheme for Raven Guard / Night Lords might actually be pretty cool...Maybe even Word Bearers due to the religious undertones...but thats neither here nor there.

On topic : nice use of the Robotic Leg, gives him more character of being a War Scarred (quite literally) Veteran. In terms of modelling the windswept effect, you don't necessarily need a cloak. You could use the Purity Seals as a means to convey that. I mean He is a Chaplain after all. Hes bound to be covered in them (unless that goes against your particular fluff). So thats an option. Another might be a ..topknot? or something like that. Maybe a charm or two. Just Ideas. Small things that might make him look more dynamic and imposing.

When you posted just the torso and arm, I kind of imagined he was delivering a battle sermon while striding purposefully into combat, legs more like the old stepping-up-onto-a-rock lightning claw Veteran.

With the more static legs, I can only picture this:

I mean, that's a good look too, just not really the direction I was expecting.

dss7: Thanks! Yeah, I'm pretty happy with that bit of chopping.

Cornelias: Good idea. I'll have a look around for something suitable.

BCK: I know that the 40k universe is filled with massive weapons, but in this case, I just didn't like it. As for the Chapter, he's going to be an Absolver. Not sure that'll help you much however.

STD: No. Just no.

Slipstreams: Great, thanks for the suggestions! I'll try a few things out and see how they look :)

Silver Phoenix: Maybe. Maybe not ;)

Lucian Eliam: As a result of your post, the legs have been removed and the search for an appropriate replacement is underway. Damn you :P

Great work Ludo, that helmet is great! Where did it come from?

I always imagine Chaplains as famously good orators and it's something I'd like to try and evoke more in my Chaplains so this is fantastic hobby fuel. I'm going to start planning my own Chaplain conversion now! :D

A D-B: Thank you, oh ever-praised wordsmith.

WarriorFish: Cheers mate :) The helmet's from the Limited Edition Dark Angels Chaplain that was in the first few sets of the original Dark Vengeance box. And I look forward to seeing your own Chaplain conversion!

Haakon Norsal: You're very welcome :) Thank you for popping by and for commenting. Make sure you post pictures of your characters!

Slipstreams: Haha, yeah, I'm still shaking :P Sadly, I'm constantly questioning everything, so even A D-B's presence in this thread won't change that. Ah well, I'll live with it ;)

What do you mean "maybe"?  There should be no maybes about it.  There is a yes. Or there is a definitely yes. Any other answer offends the God-Emperor.... Now stop making mind blowingly sweet conversions and go post more in the Campaign Thread.

I think you should keep the streched open hand left arm configuration, looks much cooler than the fist. And for the right arm I suggest you magnetise it at the wrist. Doing so gives you flexibility for weapons loadout, but also, estethically a small pistol or a crozius arcanum would look good as a weapon in the right hand.

Yeah, with his hand like that, the only pose that comes to mind for legs is the 'dramatic one step up!' pose.  Foot planted on a rock, debris, defeated enemy, kitten, whatever.

Feels a bit uninspired, but the only other option that comes to mind is to have his legs together, as in flush with one another.  It could look like a very rigid duelist's pose (the ramrod straight 'saluting' sort), or it could like he's asking 'May I have this dance?'  I'm not sure such a pose is even possible with the dimensions of power armor.  That gap between the thighs is very intentional, and the flaring widths of the legs (especially around lower legs) mean the can never be totally flush.

Hm...maybe a very slight lean, pushing his hips in the opposite direction of the outstretched arm.

That hand makes things tricky...potential for great success, or great failure.  A gamble, my good sir.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. tongue.png Silliness aside, I think this Chaplain looks awesome but I admit I think the leg posing takes away from the overall model. I feel like he should be standing on/atop something like this dude, dramatically challenging the foe to come get him or giving an epic speech/rallying call to his brethren, heedlessly of the enemy fire. Anyway, that's just my two cents. happy.png

Busted out my old sketchpad, cuz I felt some basic imagery would explain better than words.

The way I see it, these are your three best options for a pose:

gallery_38474_6917_6973.jpg

Dramatic spread stance, casual closed stance with an out turned foot, or dramatic one-leg-up stance. The last feels cliche, but it is the easiest and typically the most effective. I quite like the middle one, but getting the legs positioned just right may turn out to be a nightmare. It's a subtle thing compared to the other two, and trivial as it may seem, turning that one foot out rather than having both pointed forward will significantly effect the pose's overall effect. The first one is easy and effective, but won't stand out much against typical Marine poses: several of the Gray Knight legs are perfectly ready-made in that position.

Ludovic...

Though I only write this now, please know that this idea, pose and that bionic leg gravy has been stolen.

Star-Lord stolen.

Walking towards the camera with bionic leg over his your shoulder level of stolen.

Boom. That just happened.

Wow, this is great posing and part selection!

I would implore you to not discard that maul though. Instead, move his hand position on the haft upward towards the head. As you have it mocked up now, it looks like a massive one-handed weapon, and I can see how you'd feel it was overly large. But if you shift his hand upward to just under the power pack assembly, it will shift the perceived weight of the maul upward, indicating that the head is very heavy, while also visually lengthening the haft. This makes it look like a two-handed weapon, which is far more believable. You already have him in an at-rest pose, so having his weapon not held at the ready is perfectly acceptable.

I will be the devils advocate here and say that the bionic leg is bad.

It is thin and makes him look unbalanced. He looks like a cartooney peg leg pirate that is all muscly and huge and hobbles around on a tiny peg leg.

I have to agree with Olgerth - the bionic leg doesn't look substantial enough. If it still had parts of the power armor, kinda like the Iron Hands upgrade kit from GW, I think it would look fine.
