Thanks DSS7 and Helterskelter. The axe I think came from the Longbeards/Hammerers. I picked it up from a bits site

I am pretty much using the axe heads from the gret axes for all my terminators and some of my TWC

The dwarf stuff is really nice, some of it may even look good on Salamanders too

I am struggling with the skull, I am worried it is a bit... dark? What do you guys & girls think?

I am doing Lord Gunn, the Winter Wolf with a white pelt, which I have since mostly painted, its still a bit grey, but gives a big contrast to the skull.

Anyhoo, thoughts please?

I quite like it too. It has been highlighted up to a 1:1 mix of ushabti bone and white scar.

I am gong to try something a bit out of the box. You know we have glazes and washes to give depth or shade. I am about to try the exact opposite.

I am going to make a bone-white mix and make it super dilute, the wash the skull with it. My hope is that it would lighten the skull universally, but allow all the highlights etc to still show through.

It will either be a moment of unorthodox genius or I will look like a total Bampot!!

Fingers crossed.

Long time, no posts!!

Well finally got my Wolf Lord done!!

It was fun to do, and I learned and re-learned a lot from it. Tried purple for the first time, tried making cloaks for the first time using the BCK tissue method, learned how to paint my greys properly.

If I did this model over again, there would be a few things I would do differently, but that's part of the fun, and it is something I can carry over to the next model :)

Anyhoo, let me know what you think, what you like/don't like. Click on the pics to enlarge them if you want..

This is First Captain, Jarl Gunn, Former Legion Mhster of the 6th, Lord of Onn Company. Gunn the Winter Wolf.

And also Logan Grimnar for 40K :)

So, not too much of an update really.

Gotten the first part of Vykryl out of the way and will do pics maybe tonight, but I really need some advice on the Knight.

1. Should I put all the house heraldry down one side and all the personal heraldry down one side or keep them split as they are now?

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20150415_122818.jpg

2. Should I do the helm quartered red and black or do split red and black like the house and personal heraldry. I was also considering doing an antique brass mask behind the helm, but the more i consider it, the more I am thinking to do it bone, like a skull? Your thoughts

Also the chest plate and carapace, I really want to do something fun like the personal heraldry across the chest, but I am worried it will be overkill and maybe should do it plain. Also for the carapacedo I go plain or go daft. I want it to look cool but not a mess of designs which confuse and confound. I want cool, dark and sinister... Something to strike dread..

Anyways more pics to give you an idea.

Speaking of Knights, got the carapace done (ish) last night.

Click on the images to enlarge... too early in the morning and Photobucket is hating me just now

20150420 055103

20150420 055122

Did the serpent pretty similar to the shoulder and leg plates, but a few things are concerning me.

1. I tried highlighting black like I highlighted the red and it looks pretty patchy

2. The red of the dragon was done in the same style as the red on the other side of the carapace. Again it looks patch. I know what irt is supposed to be, but would someone else, or would it just look like a red blob? Would I have been better saving loads of time and just dong a flat red with minimal highlighting of the serpent design?

Feeling like crap, this cough/cold is really kicking my arse.

Any and all thoughts are welcome

Hi DSS7, Thank you.

It looks like not much progress has been made, but to me it is loads smile.png

I have finally worked out my colour scheme and designs for my vowed Knight Castigator.

I reckon I can knock it out in 1 week-10 days, as I have to do it all with paint brushes.

Tried some freehand.

SAM 2814

You can see a little of the previous attempt with a stencil below it which I really didn't like. Sometimes breaking out the pencil and paints can be far more rewarding, if more time intensive... Felt like I had gotten back something I was missing when I did the freehand, so I am a wee bit proud of that.

I think I nailed it. happy.png

About 80% done on the Knight. A lot of mistakes, but I have learned ready for my ETL vowed Knight Castigator smile.png

SAM 2815

SAM 2816

SAM 2817

My only concern is that I wanted this to be really dark & brooding. I am not sure if I have achieved that.
I still have to finish off the gold with a few more layers which will hopefully make it less brassy.
It is not a traitor Knight, it is Imperial/ Freeblade but neither did I want it to look overly Imperial, hence no aquila's. Have I managed to achieve that effect or is it too red & brassy like a big Khorne-y warrior?
What are your thoughts?

  • 2 months later...

Okay, getting there with my first vow: Sorry for the slow progress. All painting done by hand and my biggest brush just now on the rig is a GW standard brush.

Plus the gits didn't send my modelling bag home on the helicopter (too many bags!) so I am 3 weeks off schedule..

Anyway enough moaning:

The Castigator so far:

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20150627_121658.jpg

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20150627_121725.jpg

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20150627_121823.jpg

As you can see a fair bit still to do, but I am getting there.

Now I would like some advice: I am wondering what symbols to do for honour markings on the Knight? There is very little in the HH books on the Knights themselves, so I need inspiration.... So does anyone have any ideas?? I considered doing a mailed fist with lightning bolts on one knee, as I saw it on some Imperial Fista and it represents fighting alongside the Emperor... But what else could I use.

The plate on the sword arm: I was considering painting a Lion's head. Also, the sword looks... Okay, any ideas for jazzing it up a bit??

Groin plate, I am thinking og putting the Wallbanks family crest there... Why? Because at the outset this Knight was in memory of my Grandad: Wilfred Wallbanks.. I will use it as an honour mark of some type, the shoulder plates bear the symbol for Lochaber, not quite a family crest, but he was a Laird there and it was passed to me, so I figured it would be a nice House symbol...

I am getting worried I am going a bit OTT with patterns and designs. Hopefully it doesn't look like a Knight impersonating a Harlequin :D

Anyways Ideas, hints and help much appreciated smile.png

Thanks Barabbas :)

I am going to go with an urban/winter base for my Knights, to match my Wolves... I want the squished Marine and Baneblade bits to stand out but not clash with the Knight and the base... Any ideas which Legion?

I was thinking Emperors Children or Alpha Legion, but not too sure, what do you think??

wow, looking really good so far. I love the colors you have chosen and the weathering is looking great so far! I would love to do a knight someday, and that castigator is extra sweet. The winter themed base will stand out nicely, as well. Keep up the great work!

So a quick update.

I was messing around during my lunch break and came up with a very rough sword design, for my Knight: Sword of Kings.

Does it look okay? Should I keep the red curl on the vent, or keep the vent on the back pure metal??

Also considering doing a crown around halfway down the sword blade, Yay or nay??

Keep the red on the vent. The sword looks good, dresses up that side of the carapace nicely. Would say the carapace looks good as is with the checker board on 1 side and sword on the other. Another emblem added may start looking cluttered.

Are you splitting your family crest over the plates above the pauldrons?

Looking good and glad to have you back with again.

Hey Vykryl.

Yup back again :) I haven't been poting in the Space Wolves forum because this is ETL related and I am vowed for the Hersy crew. I will post there but after 1st August :)

So that is 2 for putting paint on the vent, but a split choice on the crown... What I can do is try out the crown on the leg armour and that will give a better idea of how it would look? Plus a much smaller area to paint if it all looks wrong. It's getting a few likes but no feedback so glad you, Barabbas & Lionofjudah have helped chip in.

Yes the 2 plates on the pauldron will carry the house symbol for Morhain, the Wallbanks crest will go on the crotch guard... traditionally it is white and red, which I could adapt to bone and red, but I may just leave it as black n red with some bone accents... We will see.

Barabbas, will give the crown a whirl on the leg and see how it looks :)

Anyways I asked earlier, should I put a crown on the sword?? I decided to experiment on the leg armour to get an idea.

So,

No crown

Crown

Opinions please?

Looks good on the grieve. I think it's that little cap in the middle of the carapace sword design that's throwing me on the crown idea. Would that cap be about in the center of the crown? Too many designs mixed with the ports and access panels could start to look busy

Yep, not 100% sure on the carapace or shoulder... Will have a think about it. Definitely keeping it on the grieve though :)

Donna do pauldrons and Golds/metals tomorrow, so no more pictures for a bit smile.png

Thanks for looking and sorry if I am driving you a mental!! Proud of my freehand on the carapace and leg armour, shoulder guard was an attempt at making a stencil

Add the crown to the left pauldron and leave the carapace as is. I think the 2 plates would play off each other well. The left pauldron could use the extra bit of color. Looking good :)
