Cheers Helterskelter, your vote is now counted smile.png

This is the first very rough pass of the design I am considering for the as yet un-named Spartan. If you look at most of the vehicles I have done thus far, the designs have been a mix of tribal and celtic/norse, quite big and bold, and fairly detailed.

I want to try something different with the Spartan. She is a venerable lady and been around from the very inception of the legion. While this kind of design would look cool on her, I wanted to give her something older and dare I say intricate.

For a big vehicle the Spartan is broken up into lots of small areas which may not suit a large design, making it look "bitty". So I have decide to go smaller, then it can be framed. I also wanted a much older look, so I wen in search of saxon/norse/ viking designs, much of which is a bit like line art. I could fill in the gaps and swirls with colour, but I doubt I will, I think the design gives a nice ancient look to her something dainty, elegant yet quite frightening also (the design not my painting)

What do you think? Like it or loathe it? More colour or stick to minimalist pallette and lines?

Lots to do still ....

Something weird happened!!

I saw a challenge and decided to accept!! Must be all these Templar players around here... biggrin.png

So I took part in the Boxing Day Bash which Grotsmasha is running, I urge you to sign up.

Now as many of you know, I am glacially slow at painting, so to push myself and paint a model in a 24 hour period would really be going for it. Especially as I chose to do a Primarch. Not just any Primarch, but the first to be released and the one I have desired for years.

None other than Angry Ron himself!!

It is a gorgeous model to work on and has me fired up to collect more of the character series. Hopefully each one will be a unique challenge and help me to develop as a modeller and painter.

I did something a bit different with the base. I went with Space Wolf casualties.

Before my pack brothers pounce it is for several reasons. I know how to paint Wolves, I wanted Angron to be pre-heresy, Nobody I know of has depicted him from the Night of the Wolf, could also be his watch-pack and it will help tie him in with my army. I also did him without the war paint on... I wanted to try paint irritated skin and I can imagine that as much as the nails buzz the skin around them would be raw and red...

I am still and always will be a Wolf smile.png

Anyway pictures...

Thanks Atia.

Blood effects were so easy, basically I took a brush loaded with Blood for the Blood God, and positioned it roughly where the blood spatter should come from and then just blew really hard.

It becomes beautifully random :D

Blowing hard gives a more aerosol effect, whereas blowing softly gives the blood a more strung out effect (bigger stretched drops).

Airbrush will allow you to be more accurate, but it is a fun effect, so fast and effective :)

Now normal service can be resumed I got a bit more work done on the Spartan. Things got a bit loopy on the hatch, but I think it worked out okay, a few bits to tidy off

By a vote of 8:1:1, Geironul was the victor, and so the runes of naming have been struck...

Making a slow start on my B@C models

My conversion skills are almost nil, so generally models are stock, but thought I would have some fun.

20160121 214959

20160121 215020

Welcome Jorgmundr, the twin blades of Fenris, from the story Prospero burns.
This is just a jumping off point, arms are tacked in place for now and need a good bit of filling, I also need to do some fur trim on the cloak.

I haven't also decided whether to stick with power blades or the chainswords from left over from my assault marines. A 3rd alternative would be to use the power swords from the B@C box set.

20160121 215028

Also choosing a head.

20160121 215327

First head or:

20160121 215449

Second left for the "pretty boy" look?

Also trying to work out how to make sword scabbard for going on his back...

Thoughts hints and tips welcome...

Hi Cody, glad you like him. I had considered 1 of each but I would like to keep the weapons paired up for now. The right hand and arm are still only tacked on, so I can certainly give it a try.

Found a new head, so might run with this:

Needs a tidy up. What do you think?

Also got bored waiting for greenstuff to dry, so did a little disection of a dread

Hopefully he can be a bit less static now..

I am in something of a quandary. I am making seekers for my 30K army, but wihout too much reference to the rulebooks.

Probably a silly thing to do. I always imagine the Seekers as a unit sent in to take out a specific target, tracking them  and then dispatching them before sowing mayhem amongsth the nemy or disappearing like mist on a spring morning.

With this in mind, I had envisaged making them striding across the battlefield, sweeping their cloaks back behind them to reveal their presence before gunning down their target. I wanted to load them up with combat blades and the like to make it look like they had been on a hunt.

However to read the rules entry they get a bolter which can be upgraded and  a bolt pistol, but no close combat weapons of any kind.

So do I stick to my plan and go with them loaded up and looking aggressive, or do I go with the book and make them Fenryka, but with no axe by their side?

Also, to stop my dread falling over I have tacked the spare dread shoulder under his foot. I might replace it and have the base trophy-less just like the other marines. However if I keep it, should I make it a Thousand Son or Alpha Legion dread that got wrecked?!?

T-Son is the easy option because of Prospero, but I want to try out an Alpha Legion colour scheme and this could be an easy way to try it.

Thanks Cody, blades and axes it is.

Started a very rough model mock up of the first 3 seekers. Sarge, comms and the knife guy.

20160131 225619

20160131 225653

20160131 225706

Not sure if I should maglock the combi plasma to his thigh and give him an open hand, as if he is about to spin round a corner grab & stab, or leave as-is. Love the destroyer helmets. Blooming intimidating!!

20160131 225744

20160131 225805

Sarge. Actually really not sure aout this one. Might move him to the veteran tactical sniper squad as he looks like a spotter.

20160131 225824

20160131 225840

Comms guy. Using the recon marine comms model. No aerials and the like. These gys sneak in, blow stuff up and leave.

Let me know what you think.

And Alphas to die at the feet of the might dread!!

Good man. Im unsure about bolter the first one as well. Right now the pose says "Oh :cuss, what was that?", which I like, but I also think that your other idea would come off better for Space Wolf (sneaking rather than being sneaked up on).

Yep, I agree. I was trying to make it look like he was sliding forwards, but as he is putting weight on the back foot, it is almost like he is stepping back.

I have tried a leg swap to bring the weight forward and tilted the torso a bit more to try and give him a more aggressive look. Pictures to be posted later.

I am seriously considering ditching the sergeant or using him as a nuncio vox model for the tactical veteran snipers. As if he is using the magnoculars to guide in a precision strike!!

Hi Cody, yes I agree it might look better. But I wasn't really feeling the leader vibe from him so a bit of chopping took place.

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/SAM_3069.jpg

He has aged a wee bit, plus lost the axe. He is now Nuncio vox for the as yet un-named veteran tactical squad, which will act as suppressor/sniper team. He lost the axe arm which was replaced with an augmetic.

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/SAM_3071.jpg

The twins, who benefit from the nuncio vox's guidance :)

(Need names)

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/SAM_3070.jpg

Sargeant for the assault based veteran tactical squad. Do I go with melta guns in the squad or volkite chargers, as I seem to have found 2 of them? :)

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/SAM_3072.jpg

Kegslayer... I put a gorget on him, but his head didnt fit, so also a head swap. The shadow makes the join look really bad, but it is an almost perfect fit.

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/SAM_3074.jpg

Trying to make some custom bolt guns for my veterans.. I like them except for the bottom right. Looks like a Dyson hand held vacuum. So much for a sniiper variant eh?

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/SAM_3075.jpg

Lastly combi-meltas for the boys... Did a re-pose on the middle guy as he looked quite "startled" before. Unfortunately his head got badly damaged. I think the cataphract heda looks quite decent. Almost knightly.

Thoughts?!?

Thanks Leviathus.. Your Militia (Victoria Lamb miniatures?) and Astral Claws are really nice too!!

A bit more WIP.

Tried out the Big bolter. What do you think, does it work?

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/SAM_3077.jpg

I might swap the head out for a mark5, a mark 3 or a bare head. I like this style of mark 4, but hate the stupid skull.OPinions?

Saving the destroyer helm for another model.

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/SAM_3076.jpg

I am aware that there is still a way to go with filling etc. I also nibbled a little too much off of the rifle butt, which can be fixed.

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/SAM_3078.jpg

Another thought was to see if a Heavy Bolter drum might fit this bad boy, and run it as a HB with suspensor web?

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/SAM_3079.jpg

Still a very rough WIP, Thanks for looking and please any thoughts would be gratefully appreciated.

Making the guns was fun, the square barrels were an idea from EdT. The big gun is a sniper rifle, tigris bolter comb, the other is a seeker boltgun.

I wanted to give the veterans something to make them stand out from the standard tacticals, so upgraded hardware seemed the way to go. Just as long as None of them start screaming Game over man, game over!!  :D

So I have the veterans up to 7 men now. I need to do one for the vevilla. I am tempted to do a small pennant, a sort of "we have planted our flag on this spot and we will not take single step backwards".

Also what do I give the last 2 guys, Melts-guns, or volkite chargers or flamers? ... I want to go Volkite, but I think that melta might be the best option for taking down hard targets... Their poses are quite samey, but I wanted to get across that they are a pack of veterans who have worked closely for decades or even centuries, so they move, act and fight as one. One I get home and get in amongst my proper bits box I can individualise them more :)

Oh these guys are going to need names and a bit of a back-story.

Well I am back again.

I am still struggling to find my painting muse & this chest infection plus flu has been kicking my behind these past few weeks.

Anyways I managed to get the design free-handed on th eother side of the Spartan

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20160227_085941.jpg

I also tried lazy painting of the quad las-cannons. Basically just drybrushed greys over the black, then washed with blood letter. Came out quite pink, so not too happy. I migh tgive it another glaze, or I migh make Khorne red into a glaze and see if a darker red might work. Failing that I'll try a little drakenhof nighshade to darken it down suitably.

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20160227_085948.jpg

Do you think red will look good, or stick to black main guns?

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20160227_085933.jpg

What should I do with the sides to give it a more Space Wolf vibe. At the oment with nothing typically wolfy, it feels a bit bland to me... Any ideas?

Lastly did the shade transitions on the lights and lenses, ready for washes and varnishing smile.png

This is called a Ginfaxi, and it is meant to bestow strength in battle or courage in combat to its bearer.

As she is to be the old dame of the legion and I wanted to go with runes and freehand which is markedly different from the usual stuff I do, I thought the ginfaxi would be appropriate.

If the front ramp had been flat I would have put it there, in fact I could make a 40mm base into a shield and do that, at the moment it is 25mm.

Also what about the colours. I wanted to jkeep it fairly neutral so as not to overwhelm the tank, but I am not sure if I have made the right choice, should I have been bolder and gone for a yellow/black combo, like the Wolf Guard, or a black and white like the long fangs?

Therein lies a problem because we have no ideas as to what colours or pack markings etc the 6th legion use in 30K.

http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb456/dantay_xv/20160227_2045071.jpg

I can deepen the reds very easily if that helps...

I like the Ginfaxi - I think it works well in the colours you have it in.

With regards to pack markings - I'd not expect them to change the BC, GH, WG and LF.

We know what Russ' pack is as Bjorn has it on his leg, I'd imagine that breachers, destroyers and maybe terrans would have their own unique ones - however that is just speculation!

Thanks Muggs.

I figure I will not worry too much about the pack markings for now anyway, as Geironul, will not be assigned to any specific pack or squad.

I found the shields were too light, due to the scanning and printing process, so darkened them up a little bit, also tried out a yellow/red combo too.
