Alpha Legion Firedrakes

Anyone done any cool conversions for AL Firedrakes? They seem crazy powerful with Infiltrate or Dynat's Hammerstrike Assault warlord trait. I know there are already Firedrake models, but shelling out the points for thunder hammers for an entire unit seems like overkill and the models themselves have a ton of Salamanders icons on them.

We'll take a loom at GWs Alpha Legion pads, then look at a Salamander pad. Could be a cool way to get a good link between the styles. The scales and stuff on the salamander models fits the hydra style to.

 

I think there are two way to approach These sort of models. One, that they are stolen gear, tailored to the legion, or two, that they are infiltrated units, in this case I would say taken from the dead on Isstvan V. You could keep the Slamander scheme but twist it to a Legion one.

Ive done my as utilising stolen tech. So my Templars are below. Using mk III armour, IF upgrade kits and BT swords, painted blue. My AL Firedrakes will be regular Cataphractii minis using the Firedrakes helmets, thunder hammers and shields with all the Sallies iconography removed

its much softer than GW plastics, thats for sure, but that also means you need to be even more careful than you usually would.

Yeah you'll want a hobby knife and a file. Just make sure you're careful as, said above, cod it's so easy to cut details off.

 

@Relict. Many thanks! The recipe is:

 

Base - 3:5 Sotek Green to 2:5 Army Painter Black (or Abaddon black)

Layer - 4:5 Sotek Green to 1:5 AP black

Wash - 1:1:1 Druchii Violet, Lahmian Medium and water (make sure it doesn't so much as change the layer colour as sit in the recesses)

Highlight - Pure, unadulterated Sotek Green

Varnish with a Matt Varnish spray to take the shine off the mini and dull the colours a bit (though this is more a personal thing)

I'm starting to think this may be the way to go with me. I simply can't choose between the legions, there's just too much cool stuff!

That was my problem! At least this way I get to utilise cool bits :) Im gonna add in random bits as well so some of my gus might have the World Eaters mk II helmets for CCW tacticals etc.

I actually wanted it for my planned Zone Mortalis detachment of Ultramarines... I like that washed-out blue-green color. I think it would fit their background nicely - a veteran unit fresh from the Underworld War on Calth, having endured both the Battle of Calth and the relentless action that followed. The Imperial Fist heads and bodies are a nice touch, too.
