Starting a 30k Force, where to begin?

Greetings Brothers and Sisters of the Crusade and Heresy.

A few days ago I decided to delve into the Heresy with the money that I will be getting from a temporary holiday job that I'll be starting next month, I managed to narrow it down to three Legions and then couldn't choose one so I said censored.gif it and will eventually do all three but set in different time frames. The one I want to start off with is the Sons of Horus set during the Heresy, the others will be the III Legion after the Unification of the Sol System and the finding of the first three Primarchs. The final will be the Warrior-Kings after Guilliman was found during the Great Crusade.

Now, I have decided that and my first Forge World purchas will be the second and third HH books. But beyond that I have no clue what to do. I am thinking of maybe getting the Sons of Horus Strike force but adding a few Legion Mk2 and MK3 armour sets and the Sons of Horus Helms and Torsos into the mix as well. Also was considering getting the Reaver Squad and using them as a command squad, but am unsure how seperate they come.

Aside from that I have no clue what else to do, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ventris.

Part of the crew, part of the ship, part of the crew, part of the ship, part of the crew, part of the ship, part of the crew, part of the ship, part of the crew, part of the ship, part of the crew, part of the ship, part of the crew, part of the ship....

I assume you already have the Betrayal then? As that's the one with the most about the SoH in.

Otherwise, you're on the right track. Guys with bolters are rarely a bad idea. As for going forward, decide what sort of force you want to build. SoH unique RoW? Then you'll probably want Reavers. Armoured Assault? Land Raiders, Spartans and Sicarans. Pride of the Legion? Special Weapons (as Vet squads can inlcude them, unlike Legion Tac squads) and Terminators. For better of worse, you can do practically any flavour of Legion force, so it'd be best to narrow it down before dropping too much cash on specifics and specialised equipment.

Well I was thinking of a Mechanised force with a few tanks as support, to keep model and cost count down rather than loads of infantry, I guess Armoured Assault would suit that best. Not sure what the SoH rite is, heard of it but guessed it featured in the 2nd or 3rd book.

SoH rules are in book 1 and then printed again in book 2 with the addition of another character, Maloghurst

Book 1 contains the basic 30k Army list though - so you may need to pick that up at some point

PS - good call on the Ultramarines, that's the guys I've (finally) chosen

Only problem is that I already have the 1st book. Though I might get the crusade legions book if I ever get some gaming in. At the moment I am doing this evening class at the same time as my local game centre is open so thats out of the picture until late June next year.

Well, I'm just a lucky rich mofo in that I got the limited edition book 3 & 2minis in a slipcase off ebay a while back :P

On topic: For the books it depends on what you're looking for:

•Fluff : Can't go wrong with the big tomes. Downside is they're heavy and cumbersome (but gorgeous) tomes to carry around.

•Rules : Two small books hands down. They cover everything they've released so far with the added benefit of all the Errata being integrated into them. Also easier to lug around if you game frequently.

For keeping army cost down, as long as you don't spam land raiders and terminators cost should be relatively low. Though buying pure Forgeworld won't be cheap in any respects.

I would get the two smaller books since you get all the rules that you need to play. You can find the fluff online anyway. It doesn't beat the awesome books and their quality, but I'd rather spend that extra money on more models. Then again I'm more of a modeler and gamer than fluff person.

Another option is ebay. You can pick up a copy of Book 1 for about $75-$90 if you're patient.

Other than that you need an HQ 20-40 troops and maybe a rhino or two. Depending on what you want to do, you might already have all those models. You can also just get some bits off ebay to make them look the part, which is the cheapest option. If you're sticking to forgeworld you'll probably want a pair of these:

one of these

and possibly a mix of these

... which will hurt your wallet a lot

Having browsed the Forge World site I now have a rough idea of what to buy in regards to having a small strike force at the cost of £255:

1x Sons of Horus Strike Force
1x Sons of Horus MKIV Torso upgrade set
1x Sons of Horus MKIV Heads upgrade set
1x Sons of Horus MKIII Pads
1x Legion MKII Crusade Armour
1x Legion MKIII Iron Armour
1x Space Marine Bolter - Phobos Pattern (x10)
1x Legion MKII Command Upgrade
1x Legion MKIV Command Upgrade

This gives me three tactical squads that I can mix and match armour with as well as some command upgrades for them, I am also tempted to buy one of the power weapon sets but heard that they were prone to bad mold lines and off-setting so not 100% sure on that but I could always browse my extensive bitz boxes and turn the SoH command guys into a Praetor and Centurion. This leaves me to buy some rhinos when I have finished them and after that some preds or Sicarans to act as fire-support.
