Land raider?

The fact that all Land Raiders in 30k can take armored Ceramite easily brings them  up to parity compared to the Spartan.

Its main selling points that give it an edge over others are : Flare Shields, 4TLLC shots and 15 capacity more than a Phobos.

However, unless your using that transport capacity to its fullest (transporting 20 man PA Blobs or 10 man Terminator blobs) then you're better of using a Phobos (10 man capacity, assault vehicle) or a Proteus if its for a Shooty unit (10 man capacity, no assault ramp, can scout).

An Achilles I'm unsure yet. I am, however, bringing one to a Heresy Campaign so I'll be better able to judge after I put it through its paces. With 6 capacity it can be a great backfield holder for a small specialist squad or HQ& buddies.

I think the Proteus has uses in some lists that mess with an opponents reserves, rely on deep striking, or something simliar. I tend to go really extreme- if I want a tough transport I am going to use a Spartan. If I just want to move 20 guys I'll ally in Admech and make them ride inside an angry tractor instead.

The Spartan really is the easy choice, you can pretty much always shake lose the points to cover the difference between a Spartan and Phobos.  If the Spartan was a little more expensive or the Phobos had 2 more transport capacity, I think the Phobos might have some use.  Being unable to carry 5 terminators + 1 HQ really sinks the Phobos.

I'm a big fan of the Proteus, though - I've never tried it, but I'm almost certain there is some kind of AV14-spam list involving taking as many Proteii as you can and filling them with infantry, and just running around the table throwing a rave party with your lascannons while ignoring 90% of the enemy's guns.

The ally levels in 30k are Sworn Brothers/Fellow Warriors/Distrusted Allies/By the Emperor's Command.  None of those allow for sharing of transports between allies.

Im currently planning on running a list that has :

8 templar + primus medicae + Sigismund in a phobos.

10 Cataphractii terminators in a Spartan.

5 Vet tacticals in an achilles (probably alpha for volkites)

I'll see how they go and report back here.

I'm usually playing 30k in 40k, so I'm using the FOC and ally rules from the core rule book. That means angry tractors for legionnaires in some of my lists :)

I need to check my 'little red books' to see if they've brought the new ones into line with the 7th edition rules.

If you're taking an Achilles then don't bother with using the transport capacity. Give it the multimelta sponsons and watch it eat through armour and use Machine Spirit on the quad launcher for the infantry
