New player, what's competitive.

Hello, I have a buddy who is extremely new to 40k and plays guard. He has played for about a month now and is just starting to get the hang of things. I myself play blood Angels and have a limited idea as to what is competitive for him to take. He has the codex, 3 veteran squads, company command squad, and heavy weapons squad. He is still learning but I have a few questions.

1. What are competitive units/list builds?

2. What are the next purchases he should make?

3. Are tanks or all infantry better?

Thanks in advance.

I'm moving this topic to the main Guard section where it is more appropriate and you will get more replies. The first thing to do is to get your friend to sign up and chat to use directly msn-wink.gif He's got a good start going, I'm assuming he wants to run a veteran company or otherwise be lower on troop numbers?

It depends what he wants to do really, the Guard codex is chock full of viable choices so the best thing to do is decide what sort of army he'd like to build. Mechanised infantry, tanks or a hybrid? Guard have great artillery too. Generally some mix of elements is best to cover more angles, so you'd have some tanks to provide some durability and big guns with infantry to support and protect them as well as hold objectives for example. You can easily run an infantry or tank company and still do well though, the codex is your oyster! smile.png

It would also help us provide better advice if we knew what sort of thing he's thinking about but as a general piece; Veterans do better in transports and Company Command Squads (CCS) like them too for added protection so if he's in doubt a Chimera or two wouldn't be a bad investment.

+1 That he should do, we are a helpful bunch of people in here.

Make sure competetive means fun. I have some non competetive units I play just because it's fun to run them on the table top. If I where to exclude the fun units in my list to make it more relaible it would take away some of the fun playing the game.

I also suggest Chimeras and a Russ variant, no Guard army is copmlete without a tankmsn-wink.gif

I was just talking about this sort of thing earlier to my wife (she loves it when I talk warhammer). The great thing about the Guard/Astra book is that there are tons of viable ways to play it. If you want to do almost entirely tanks that's possible. Want the Russian waves of Infantry doable. Heck you can even do Air Cav. And eventually you collect enough that you are like Warriorfish...........Lord Warmaster himself able to field any and all amries the Imperial Guard ever thought about. I'm kidding. However Fish does have some of the best advice I've seen and heard on here for Imp Guard.

So really it depends on what kind of funds your friend has and what he/she wants to play. Do warn them that I've yet to see anyone start collecting Guard and leave it at one type of army. They want "just one more tank" or just another platoon. All of it leads to a major plastic or metal crack addiction not easily sated.
