Tarvick: I have a handful of these bases from Secret Weapon. I'll probably paint them in a ochre brown which, I think, should go very well with the purple. http://www.secretweaponminiatures.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=79_30_101&products_id=519

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

Just finished a 5 man squad. I think they look pretty good. The bolter casing on the middle marine is too bright and stark so I'll try to wash that down to a darker teal. I should probably make a light box to take pictures rather than just holding them in a box under my painting lamp. Otherwise, I'm happy with how these guys turned out. Now they just need backpacks.

I'm still practicing freehand symbols but may end up biting the bullet and getting the FW transfers since I plan on getting some tanks in the coming months for these guys.

Comments and criticisms are welcome as always

Made a lightbox and tried to take some better pictures.

Here is my attempt on freehanding the Emperor's Children symbol. The lines are a little sloppy but I can clean them up later.

P.S. I just noticed that the two marines on the left are looking straight down. I'm trying to reposition the heads w/o effing up the paint too much, but they may just be stuck that way...
Aye, they look very good! How fast can you paint one model? Also, would you mind at some point posting a tutorial with how you paint your EC's (preferably with pics)? If not, then perhaps just a list of paints you use and I'll figure out the rest ;)

@Hrolf and Forte: Thank you very much!

@Battle-Brother Ludovic:

The first marine took about 3.5 hours since I was really rusty. The next four I painted two at a time and took about 4 hours per 2 marines since I could go back and forth between highlights. I batch-painted the guns and backpacks and that took maybe 1-1.5 hours.

Will try to cobble together a tutorial but here's my recipe for purple. I use P3 paints for the purple and some GW

1. Prime grey (I use Dupli-Color auto primer)

2. Base coat w/ P3 Beaten Purple

3. Wash the model 2 times w/ GW Druchii Violet mixed w/ some Army Painter Dark Tone (use Nuln Oil if you have that)

4. Leave wash in the recesses, and then go over the main areas w/ P3 Beaten Purple

5. 1:1 Mix of Beaten Purple and P3 Exile Blue (a dark navy) was used for shading in darker areas

6. 1:1 Mix of Beaten Purple and P3 Carroburg Crimson (dark pink/purple) for highlights

7. 1:2 Mix of Beaten Purple and P3 Carroburg Crimson for further highlights

8. 1:1 Mix of Beaten Purple and P3 Trollblood Highlight (a light greenish/grey) used for edge highlighting

Not sure how most of this translates to Citadel Paints. I really prefer P3 paints for coverage.

Thanks for the kind words.

Currently attempting to finish my Praetor and start a Contemptor.

After several years of hemming and hawing I'm finally nearing completion with the praetor. He started as a BT marshall (which is why he has a rosarius on the right hip).

The cape still needs to be painted.

Serioualy nice colours there, would love to know morw about how they're achived as I'm still struggling a little with colour depth (my highlights always seem to look like lines painted on close up!)

Thanks Lucio. The smoother blending is really a mixture of techniques. I usually do thin layers or "feathering" for highlights but I get impatient with painting. I've started to incorporate 2-brush blending to get smoother transitions much quicker than with feathering. I'm also not very adept w/ wet-blending.

2-brush blending basically is what it says; You have one brush to apply paint and then you have a second brush that's damp and paint-free to ease the transitions.

You can check out the idea at the following site:

There's also a Youtube link to show how it's done:

Continuing to work on the Praetor. His cape is now attached. The blending on the inside of the cape is pretty sad and I'll try to work on it some more. After closer inspection of the teal, it could use some more highlights.

Planning on adding some free-hand designs to the cape as well.

Now all that's left is the power sword, hair, and other minor details.
